My Fortune
Wednesday. 3.31.04 1:55 pm
My fortune for being born in July:

Watch out for eleventh-hour slipups. The easier the task appears, the more important it is to double-check the details. Overconfidence works against you. Don't stew over failures. Shift your attention to other matters when you feel irritated. You need to learn how to change your focus quickly.
Love : Don't be so pushy! Your partner's feelings come first.

Friendship : Maybe it's time to reestablish contact with an old friend. A simple phone call or e-mail message should do the trick.

Lucky Item : a photo of someone you like

So So Day
Tuesday. 3.30.04 3:38 pm
Today has been relativily uneventful. Econommics was just as its always been. We started doing these cost, and price functions and today we started working with actual numbers. So we had equations like P = 200 + 10Q + 20Q^2 and P = 10Q - 300. And then we have to find where they intersect, you know just set them equal to each other and solve. Well immediately after this problem was posed the collective mathematical ability of the class showed its true colors. "Umm, Prof. Mirman, how would you go about solving that equation? There's squares in it and everything." Actual question, not making this up.

Needless to say the majority of my class is from the College of Arts and Sciences and only a few (me included) are from the School of Engineering. The engineering people had no trouble, but just about everyone else was scratching their heads since apparently they had assumed after high school algebra ended they wouldn't need to know how to solve for a variable again. So today the class turned into a varitable algebra lecture. Thats why we (engineering students) call them the College of Arts and Crafts. Fitting name I think, haha. Shouldn't joke too much though, Tyler is in the College, but knows his math, but he's the exception.

Later I went to astronomy and got my exam back. It ended up being an A so I'm happy. I like that class, all that galaxy, star, black hole, stuff is interesting.

Then I just came back from a meeting with my boss here at school and she's offering me a job working at the school help desk next year. It basically entails answering the phone calls of troubled users and fixing their problems. Not unlike the stuff I do already, but I'd get paid so that's a plus. There I go again, adding more stuff for me to do ... sigh ...

Comedy
Sunday. 3.28.04 5:01 pm
You know in my last entry I talked about Bob Saget performing next weekend. Well, I just found out someone else is performing next Sunday at the same place that blows Bob Saget out of the water. Gallagher! The Sledge-O-Matic, watermelon smashing comic is coming! I can't wait. Its kind of funny on the website to buy the tickets you can get balcony, upper main, lower main, or sledge zone seats! Sledge zone is the only way to go, it only cost $2 more! This is going to be so cool.

Oh, something else happened last night that was hilarious. Although any attempt by me to tell it, won't make it sound nearly as funny as it was. So I won't even try. But just to let you know it had something to do with canned ham and poker.

Haha, later

Frag Fest
Friday. 3.26.04 11:11 pm
Ok, I'm mad. I had this entire post written and then accidently closed the window and lost it all. It's not like you care, but oh well.

Let me start again. Anyway. I had a really clever opening line, but I forgot it, so I'll just start into the story. Last night I can't remember how many times I died. Not literally but in the computer. I was about ready to retire to my room about 10:00 and play UT2004. I had just installed it that afternoon and hadn't played it yet. But almost immediately I was drafted for a suedo-LAN party of Halo that the hall started up. The four people that have XBoxes started a 16 person LAN game and they needed one more person, who am I to inconvience. The games were pure craziness. Screams echoed down the hall of "You b****!" and "F*** you [Insert Name Here]!" It must have been quite amusing to anyone listening out the window. And trust me you could definitely hear us from outside, I'm sure of that. Fun, fun.

Then after the frag fest, I came back to my room and realised that I still hadn't played UT2004 yet. So I woke my computer up and turned on the game. Set up my profile YoMan_ (comment if you want to play!) and set up my character skin. Then I joined a deathmatch server and started fragging away. Let me say that the levels are absolutely gorgeous! I have it set on 1280x1024 and all the details on Very High. It runs smooth, sharp, and you can feel every severed arm as it splats against the wall from a well placed flak shot. I found a good server and played for a long time. There were maybe 12 people playing. Me and four other people were almost dead even every single game. It was a real contest to see who was number one. Then I realised it was after 4:00 and I had a 9:00 class the next morning. So I decided to call it a night. Hey four hours sleep is better than none. Fun. Fun.

What else is going on ... Oh the other day I was walking down the sidewalk, and someone handed me a brochure advertising a comedy show by none other than Bob Saget. Thats right, the Full House, America's Funniest Home Videos, Danny Tanner, Bob Saget. And get this, at the bottom of the paper it said, "Show contains mature content." I almost want to go just to see the dad from the Brady Bunch show of the 90s tell jokes with adult content. That would be funny in and of itself. Seriously though I'm thinking of going just to say that I saw him in person. That would make him the second most famous person I've seen. The first being Bill Nye.

Another thing happened that is both kind of funny and not funny at the same time. Alright, I don't know if you know but the other week my calculus teacher asks me if I wouldn't mind tutoring someone in my class. I said sure, why not. It would be good to help someone else out. So I met with my tutee (is that would you'd call it?) and we worked out some problems together. She seemed to understand the basic concepts, but when it came to actually don't the problems she would always get hung up on different parts. So we worked a few days that week to get ready for the calculus exam, which was last Monday. So Monday came and went and I didn't see her anywhere. Then today I run into her and ask when she wanted to meet again. She told me that she didn't really need to be tutored anymore because she was going to withdraw from the course. Apparently her test score was so bad that she basically had no chance to recover so she's going to withdraw to avoid an F on her record. So ... not funny: she's in the engineering school and will be withdrawing from calculus (a required course) and who knows how she'll get it back, if she decides to become an engineer at all. Funny: my first time ever tutoring someone, we work together for one week, and then she flunks the test and has to withdraw from the course. How am I going to tell my teacher?! "Um, excuse me Prof. Beck, you know the student you set me up to tutor, well after my help and instruction she proceeded to fail the test. And apparently she did so bad her only alternative is to withdraw from the class." Haha. Interesting situation.

Ahh, never a lack of excitement at college.

Finally Over
Thursday. 3.25.04 3:05 pm
Phew...

Finally this week is over. Well not literally, but as far as I'm concerned. In the past 6 days I've had 4 exams and they're finally over. First was computer science last friday. I didn't think it was that hard at all, but judging from the faces of the people next to me, it wasn't a mutual feeling. Then I had calculus on monday, last went pretty well, but i was stupid and read the question wrong for one of them, but still ended up doing all right. Last night was physics. Aaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh! That had to be one of the hardest exams I've taken here. The questions were all worded weird, and all the problems were, how do I say this, odd. They referenced stuff that he had never talked about and you could tell he was purposefully trying to trick you on some of the questions. I hate it when teachers try to do that. Test my knowledge of the subject matter, not whether I can spot your trick questions. Getting down off my soap box ...

This afternoon was astronomy, and (cross my fingers) wasn't so bad. Since it was all true/false and multiple choice you didn't actually have to know everything the question was asking to answer it. All those old elementary school test taking skills coming back to help.

Now that all that's over I can finally get back to important things. Like going to GameStop tonight and picking up UT2004. I would have already had the game (special edition) but thanks to BestBuy.com I don't. Stepping back up on my box. I preordered UT2004 Special Edition from BestBuy.com And as I said in my previous entry they backordered it after the release date passed. Well a day or so ago I get an email from BestBuy.com and they tell me my order has been cancelled. Sorry for any inconvience. What?! So I call them up and they say that they ran out of supply and had to cancel the remaining preorders. So I say, "What am I supposed to do now? I can't get the game anywhere else because they're sold out. How can you not even fulfill your preorders?" And the guy's like, "Umm, but we refunded your money." Ok, apparently he doesn't get it, I don't care about the money, I wanted the game. Some people. Getting off my box. Last time this entry I promise.

So tonight I'm going to load UT2004 from its 72 disc set and frag the night away. Ahh ... that's sounds like fun.

Funny Picture

Came across this picture online and couldn't help but laugh. It looks like something I might see outside a certain Captain D's someday.
