Yay!
Tuesday. 4.6.04 5:04 pm
Yes! I am so happy/relieved! I didn't really put it on this blog I don't think, but I've been working on this ASP website for the IT department here to do some faculty signups online. About 15 files with over 3000+ lines of code. Today was judgement day for the project. I had to do this big presentation of the final application I created. I found out at the last minute that the head of the university's web site development team was going to be attending. In other word's he's the UVA Webmaster. Aaaahhhh! But all went well. The computer worked, my application worked, and no one feel asleep during the demo. Then afterwards I got a chance to talk to the head guy, Keith. He said I did a great job and that he was "thoroughly impressed."

That's a big relief that went well. Now the project has gotten the green light and its going to be going up on the web next week for use by the university. Very cool. Glad all the hard work these past two months paid off.

Yay, I'm so happy!

I Had To Post This
Monday. 4.5.04 12:28 pm
I saw this on someone's site and had to post it. I thought it was pretty good.

Introductory Chemistry was taught at Duke University for many years by professor Bonk. One year, two guys took the class and did pretty well on all the quizzes and mid-terms--so much so that going into the final, they each had a solid A. These two friends were so confident going into the final that the weekend before finals week, despite the Chemistry final being on Monday, they decided to go to the University of Virginia to party with some friends.

They did this and had a great time. However, with their hangovers and tiredness, they overslept all day Sunday and didn't make it back to Duke until early Monday morning. Rather than taking the final then, they found professor Bonk after the final and explained to him how they missed the final. They told him they went up to the University of Virginia for the weekend and had planned to come back in time to study, but they had a flat tire on the way back and didn't have a spare. They couldn't fix it for a long time and were late getting back to campus.

Bonk thought this over and agreed that they could take the final the following day. The two guys, elated and relieved, studied that night and went in the next day at the time that Bonk had told them. He placed them in separate rooms and handed each of them a test booklet. He told them to begin.

They looked at the first problem which was something simple about molarity and solutions; it was worth 5 points. "Cool," they thought. "This is going to be an easy final." They then turned the page. They were unprepared, however, for what they saw on it. The question contained only two words: (95 points) "Which tire?"

Basketball and Such
Sunday. 4.4.04 12:01 am
Phew. Am I going to sleep well tonight. As you may have read from yesterday's entry I was slated to play some basketball today. I got up around noon to get ready and headed over to the gym. First off I should have realised it was a bad sign when I actually had to consult a map before I left to even know where the gym was. Anyway, I found my way there and my friends were already there on the court shooting around. We decided to play a game of 21. It was sad. I think I got to a maximum of 3 points every time before I was tipped back to zero. Its not like the people I was playing with were star players either, average, but needless to say I didn't come away with a win.

Then after another game of 21 (which I lost by being tipped out, tipped on 3 consecutive shots) we saw these people that were playing badminton leave the court. So me and another guy, Michael, decided to try our hand at badminton. Now Michael was the guy that won both 21 games we had just previously played, and also the guy that managed to tip me those three consecutive times out of the last game. Needless to say he's very competitive. Anyway, he told me that he had never played badminton before, I only told him I had played a few times. Now for those of you that don't know I absolutely love badminton. And along with Scott are reigning champions when it comes to badminton. (Ms. Conner-Gray anyone? Haha) I neglected to tell him about my badminton past and started hitting the birdie around real soft and high floating shots. Let him get the hang of hitting the thing. Then he wanted to play a game ... fine. I started off easy on him, but slowly increased the difficulty. [ Insert Maniacal Laugh Here ] My serves were still easy shots to hit back, but my returns got him running. First I'd hit it to the front, then towards the back, then rear up like for a slam and then hit a soft dropshot to the left corner. It was kind of funny. About halfway through I realised that he realised that I really knew how to play and he was intent on defeating me. To make a long story short (too late) he went down 15-0. So a bad day of basketball, turned into a good day of badminton. He wants to play again sometime to beat me ... anytime, anywhere!

After that we went back to basketball. By then a few more people showed up and we decided to start a game going. 4 on 4 full court. About 5 minutes in I realised this too wasn't the best idea. Running. Running back and forth from basket to basket. Especially since I can't remember the last time I really did any real exercise like that. On the bright side I did block one shot, had a steal, and made a basket. But rest assured (pun intended) those came toward the beginning of the game. Our team ended up losing 20-14. Admirable, but we could have won if I wasn't the team's weak link. Maybe next time. We had to leave after that since a bunch of other people were waiting to use the court. So I then started to walk back to my dorm. It seemed sooo much farther walking back then it did in walking there. Haha. I really need to exercise more.

For the rest of the day, I finished some HW and played a little Halo. My friends and I have this set map and stuff we always play that is really fun. For anyone that plays Halo try this out. We play on Damnation, Oddball, with Rockets as the only weapons. Now in this level there is this huge waterfall room with three narrow parallel walkways with an endless chasm if you fall off them. Conviently the oddball appears directly in the middle of this room. Plus there are like a dozen different ways to get to this room and it only really takes a single rocket shot to kill a person, so at best you only get the oddball for like 5 seconds before you are shot down into the abyss. This leads to enormously high death tolls, the normal for a two minute oddball game is around 70 or so. Fast paced and explosions everywhere, plus you don't really have to be particularly good at aiming, just hit the ground somewhere close to the person and they die with the rocket launcher. I won today's game, yay!

Then some people decided to watch the movie Se7en. I had already seen it, but decided to watch anyway since its such a good movie. You should see it if you haven't. Morgan Freeman, Brad Pitt, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Kevin Spacey it you care about the actors.

So today was pretty good. At least I still remembered the rules in basketball. But I still kick ass in badminton! Now I have a DDR score of 1. Haha

Today
Saturday. 4.3.04 1:44 am
Well I got a lot done today. Almost finished my evil physics HW. Started on my CS postlab assignment. Filled out my major declaration forms for next semester. They're the ones where you say what engineering discipline you want to apply for. CpE (Computer Engineering), CS (Computer Science), EE (Electrical Engineering), and Systems. I have some CpE meeting I have to go to on Monday to get an advisor for next year. And managed to get some Halo in. Its become a Friday tradition now after class to bring in the weekend.

Met some friends for dinner tonight and they're having a big basketball game tomorrow so I said I'll join in. I love basketball, just haven't played in a long time. So we'll see how that goes. Tell you all about it tomorrow. I guess that's about it. Wow, it sounds like I didn't do anything today. But I did really, trust me. Had some good conversation.

Oh I renamed the quote module "Quotes for the Day" since I realised there were multiple quotes. Also I added a new joke to my "Stuff I Already Wrote" section. "Tooth Pulled" is a joke I heard a few weeks ago and I thought it was pretty funny. Anyway.

Yesterday Recap
Friday. 4.2.04 1:07 pm
I must have gotten over excited posting twice in day because then I went ahead and forgot to post at all the next day. Oh well. Looks like today will be another two post-er, one for yesterday, one for today. The "today" post comes later. You know, after today is done.

Anyway. Yesterday was a good day. We did those equations again in Economics. Solving for letters, if that's as hard as it gets I'll be happy. Plus it was funny because someone's cell phone rang during the class and the teacher decided to answer it. This is the conversation the class heard: "Hello ... No this isn't Rob this is his Econ professor ... Yes he's in class now ... No you can't talk to him." Then apparently the guy hung up on him. We were all laughing. It was so funny. After that he went back to teaching, but you could see practically half the class reach down and try to secretly turn their phones off.

Astronomy, same old same old. We talked about radio galaxies. Cool stuff. Then for the most exciting part of my day, laundry. I hate doing laundry and try to put it off as long as possible. Well yesterday it couldn't wait anymore. I was officially down to zero socks and a single t-shirt. Hopefully I can hold out doing laundry again until April 9th when I'm coming home for the weekend. Yay! I'm in a good mood, if you couldn't already tell.

Second Post
Wednesday. 3.31.04 5:55 pm
Hey, two posts in one day. There are first times for everything. I was looking around at these upper level CS classes here at UVA and came across this 3-D animation class that had some movies they had made. Some are good (some are really bad), but this one is absolutely incredible! Called "Birth of Man." It's thought provoking and very, very well done. It is about 67 MBs so beware on slow connections. But if you can, take a look at it, extremely cool stuff. Download here.

Today was kind of a gloomy day outside, but that didn't make it a bad day. I did, however, found out that I'm mysteriously not on the first-year mailing list here at school so I missed an email telling about how to sign up for majors. Good thing my friend told me about it. (Thank you Dave) So I've got to get the paperwork to officially apply for my engineering major. I think I'm going to choose computer engineering. And then computer science, and electrical engineering as my two backups (in that order). There actually is a limit to the number of people that can sign up for CpE and CS, so hopefully my grades are good enough to let me in (*hopes*). Either way I wouldn't mind doing any of the three.

And it looks doubtful that I can go see Gallagher this weekend. My ride, which I was counting on to drive me to the place, found out he has a hockey team weekend thing that same day. He's the only one I know that has a car available that weekend, so I would have to get a taxi there and back. Adding that amount to the cost of the tickets, which are already kind of high, $30, it just doesn't seem worth it. Unfortunately ... I'll just have to wait until one of his shows comes on Comedy Central. Assuming I can bum a TV off someone. Haha.

Later
