And Today As Well
Sunday. 4.25.04 1:12 am
Besides the fact that I had to wake up at 7:00 this morning, on a Saturday too!, this was a cool day. I got up early because I went hiking with four other friends through this wooded park. It was pretty fun. We even hopped over a "Do Not Enter, Path Closed" gate. Oooh. I feel like a criminal. Haha. Then we got to the end of the trail and someone *cough*John*cough* thought it would be a good idea to walk back along the side of the road. Ok, good idea for a little while until the shoulder disappeared and the road started making these sharp blind curves around a cliff side. We were like almost getting run over, so we decided (again another bright idea) to scale the hill next to the road to get out of the way. Well it was kind of hard to climb because it was 1) steep and 2) completely covered with leaves and pine cones which gives absolutely no traction to walk up. Plus there was the added, i guess excitement or peril, that if you slipped and fell down you'd land right on the road full of cars, so. Need I repeat again what a good idea this was. So we're grabbing onto trees and pulling ourselves up trying not to slip on the underbrush. Then I see a small stream flowing down the hill a few feet next to me. Its got a bunch of rocks in it, and I thought to myself, "Self, those rocks would make much better footholds than these pine needles." So, (in another bright idea) I jump, well more like hop or leap, over and into this stream. Immediately I realise that this stream even with its rocks probably wasn't the best idea. As you see, a stream by definition contains "water" and more importantly *flowing* water. And this "water" makes all the rocks fairly slippery. Maybe I should have thought of that earlier .... In any case, here I am holding on to this smooth slick stream about 20 feet above the road, down a more than 45 degree slope. So now if I fell, not only would the cars get me, but I'd be torn up by the rocks on the way down. Well, now. Quite a mess you got yourself into Chris. Lol. I'm not exactly sure how I managed to get up the rest of the way, but I climbed up that stream a good 10 feet farther until it leveled off. I'm pretty proud of myself, mainly for not falling and getting killed, but also for climbing up a stream on the side of the mountain. All those other people took the easy path, heh. So listen kids, when climbing a hill, don't choose to climb up the creek bed, its just a plain bad idea. It was a really fun trip though, we need to do it again.

After that I went to Best Buy, and got a new CD. Dido - Life for Rent. Very cool. I like it. Anyway, then went to KFC for lunch and then came back around 2:00 pm. Come to think of it last Saturday I still wasn't even up by then. Hmm.

The rest of the day wasn't near as exciting. Met with my calculus tutorees to start studying for the final. Apparently her friend who showed up the last time, is coming from now on. So that's kind of cool, they're both really nice. I hope I'm helping them out.

After that, physics was the name of the game for the rest of the day. People frantically trying to get it done before the deadline. We have this online submission system for physics hw, so inevitably one person will get #4, and another will get #6 and part 2 of #1, and so on. So the hall gathers in the hall trading formulas and telling how to do the problems. Its kind of funny to stand back and watch. It very closely resembles the stock market. People holding the formulas in their hands yelling out, "I've got #2 and I'll trade for #5 part b." "No good I need #3, but I've give you #7 instead." Physics bargaining at its finest. Or should I say economics, who knows. Speaking of that my economics final is on Tuesday, ahhhhh! I really need to study.

Later.

Today Was Cool
Saturday. 4.24.04 12:30 am
Did a lot today, but it was fun. To start out I *almost* missed physics this morning. The class starts at 9 am so I set my alarm for 8 am so I can have time to wake up, take a shower, yada yada yada. This usually works out pretty well except this morning I turned off the alarm and decided to lay back down for another minute. When I turned back over to see what time it was it was 8:55. I had fallen back asleep. So I throw some clothes on and rush over there to arrive just as he starts. Now looking back on it I probably should have just stayed in bed. This had to be his most boring lecture ever. I mean he talked for 50 minutes about the second law of thermodynamics and the properties of heat flow in ideal gases. It was sooo boring.

Math was next and was a little better. We're doing Taylor and Maclaurin series for anyone who cares or knows what they are. But anyway, the calc has gotten to a level where the class splits very cleanly into three groups: the people that understand what is going on and follow the lectures, the people that fade in and out of comprehension writing down notes so that they can figure out what they mean later, and then there's the group of people that haven't the slightest clue what is going on. Its kind of interesting watching everyone while class is going on because you can tell what group people fall in. Oh, and we all got cookies in calc today as well! This is kind of a long story, but what are blogs for? Just skip to the end of this paragraph if you want. Anyway there's this girl named Stacey in our class who fits the stereotype of a blonde to the letter. Just a little background, last semester when we were all in freshman engineering calculus we were in this big room the night of the first test. She was sitting beside me and introducing herself to everyone around her. "Hi, what's your name? What dorm are you living in? What's your major?" were the three standard questions. Well after talking to the 10 or so odd people around her, she proclaims to the class that "I can't believe it, everyone sitting next to me is here for engineering, what are the odds of that?!" Duh ... This is a freshman engineering calculus class. Odds are most everyone in the room is an engineer. Ok, back to the story. Well she I guess usually gets the average on tests and stuff which amount to a 70-75, somewhere in there. And one day in office hours with the professor, she apparently said that if she got an 80 or higher on the next test she'd make the whole class cookies. The professor overheard this comment. Then after the next test Ms. Beck (the prof) looked and found Stacey had scored an 80. She then proceeded to tell the whole class the next day about the wager, of making cookies, and about how she had scored the required 80. She then told the class that having overheard the wager, she was going to make sure Stacey held to it, by telling the class that if Stacey didn't bring the entire class cookies by the next class meeting she would drop a letter grade! Needless to say, the next class period cookies appeared. So I got some peanut butter cookies. Mmm.

Then after calc, went to computer science for the last time. Next time I go will be for the final in a few weeks. I liked that class. Found a guy in there who likes to do game programming too! Got his email address and stuff so we can work on some stuff together over the summer, making games and such. So that's kind of cool. He's also from Tripoli, I think he said. It sounded like that anyway, so email would be the only way to talk over the summer, heh. Imagine those long distance bills. Hey, just realised I have a friends from Tripoli, Togo, and Romania. Ooo, multi-cultural, lol.

Afterwards, I played Halo for a little while (Friday tradition). Then went to see Lord of Rings: Return of the King. They were playing it here at the university theater, so I decided to check it out. Very good movie, better the second time. After that I went with some guys to this restaurant in Charlottesville. It was some kind of steakhouse/buffet place that was really good. Ate too much, but oh well I need a break from dining hall food every once in a while. We rode in my friend's new truck he got. Its a pretty nice truck, a 1999 Ford f-250 Superduty. Supercab Short Bed 4x4, Diesel. I have absolutely no idea what that means, heh, but that's what it is for those that do. The tires are up to my waist and he's got this wicked paint job on it. Gray down the sides with a sliver trim and red flames on the front. It is a beast. Especially because it has a diesel engine. I don't know how it differs from a regular gas engine, but I do know that it makes a *lot* of noise. Sounds like a city bus when he revs the engine. Oh, it was funny. We were coming up to a red light and there was a Jaguar in the lane besides us stopped at the light. We got to the light just as it turned green, so he could have just kept going. But ... he decided to slow down to a stop next to the Jag just as it was starting to move from the red light. And then procede to rev the engine to full and just leave the guy behind in his diesel fury. We were like "Whoa! I can't believe you just did that!"

And on a completely different note, I looked but didn't see Elijah today. Word on the street was he was here at UVA today to tour the place. I saw a few tour groups walking around, but I didn't see he him.

Then I get back and decide to write this blog. Which now that I look at is fairly long. I guess sometimes I just like to type. Well, I'll talk at you later.

Moving Along
Thursday. 4.22.04 11:54 pm
Well this semester is moving along. Had my astronomy test today, my final test! Well in astronomy anyway. I'd say it went fairly well. I brought my new lucky charm with me, hopefully it helped. Now my next one is on Tuesday, economics.

Um, what else did i do today ... I played some Halo for a little while. That was fun. Not too much else. A good day nonetheless.

Oh, and I found out that my calculus tutoree didn't fail! Yay! She said she got about the average on the last test, so I'd call that a success. My record is now one course withdraw and one average score. Not a perfect record, but who is.

Today was not very exciting. Class and then studied the rest of the time for my astronomy test tomorrow. Wish me luck. Other than that I ordered Dominos, got me an hawaiian pizza! Yay! Anyway.

Thanks to everyone that posted answers to the two questions. If I had to answer them I'd say the first thing you know (or I guess think you know) is what's possible. And then you spend the rest of your life finding out how so much more is possible than you originally thought. Second, I'd have to say the biggest mystery of them all is why. Why is behind everything we do and yet it is the most difficult thing to pin down.

Being slightly less serious, Scott did manage to get both of the answers I was looking for. What should his prize be? Dare I leave this up to my Nutang readership ... yes I will! Post your suggestions.

Also, I got this in my fortune cookie today:

Love is a present that can be given every single day you live.

I tend to agree.

What's the first thing you know?

What's the biggest mystery of them all?

Not Too Much
Tuesday. 4.20.04 12:27 am
Not all that much happened today. But I'll write it down anyway in case anyone cares to read it. Went to physics and it was really cool. We're doing harmonic motion and resonance. You know all that stuff Josh H. was saying Tesla discovered. Anyway. There was this wine glass and the teacher had an amplifier and directed speaker. He slowly turns the sound to higher and higher frequencies. The glass started to shake and twist and then all of a sudden ... *shatter* The glass broke into a million pieces, probably impailing the front row of the class. That was cool.

Then calc. Nothing much. Still need to find out if my tutor-ees passed. I'll do that tomorrow. Then physics lab. Yay, last time I have to go to that class! The TA brought Mug root beer for everyone. Guess that was our class party. Oh!! And I don't think I ever said anything about this but the TA (Teacher's Assistant) looks exactly like Seraph from the Matrix. You know the fighting guy that hung out with the Oracle. Anyway the guy looks *exactly* like him and today I got him to say "You do not truely know someone until you fight them." It was so funny! The whole class heard him say it and there was a slight pause. Then like half the people just started laughing out loud. It was great, the TA apparently had seen the movie, so he was laughing too. The rest of the people, (who I guess never saw the Matrix) thought we were crazy. So funny.

Um, then I played some tennis. Hadn't played in a good while and it showed. Did alright I guess, but the guy I played against was pretty good. Bad thing was we only got to play for about an hour before we were booted from the court to make way for a tennis class. Why can't I be in a class like that?
