Two Days In One
Sunday. 4.18.04 7:46 pm
I didn't write an entry for yesterday, so this will be two days in one. Here goes.

Saturday started late, like around 2:30 pm, when i got up. I always sleep in on Saturday's and staying up until like 4:00 am the night before only helped that cause. Funny thing happened that night, I was coming back from brushing my teeth around 3:45 am or so and this guy Alex from down the hall was just standing looking at the wall. I mean looking intently at it. He looks over at me and makes this odd "Ughhum" type noise and looks back at the wall slowly pressing his hand against it. I mean talk about being wasted. Anyway, after I got up I installed this new game demo called PainKiller. Pretty cool game, really good graphics. Played that for a while, did some other stuff. Then around 7:00 a group of my friends IM me about this rap concert going on that night. I'm like sure, I'm not doing anything else, plus I like rap. So we walk over the place, it's me and about 5 other guys. We get to the door and we're looking around at all the people there. We get our tickets and get inside and realize we are the *only* white people in the whole place of like 400 or so. We got seats over toward the left side of the stage and waited for it to begin. I've got to say that was one of the coolest things I've been to here at UVA! The whole crowd was jumping up and down with their hands in the air, moving to the beat. They'd hold the mic out for the chorus and everyone would scream it back. It was so much fun! I'd never heard of any of the performers before but they were hot.

Today I didn't sleep in too late. Went with a few people to downtown Charlottesville and got pizza at this one pizza place. One piece was about $6. Thought it was a ripoff until I saw the slice. It was huge! I mean the full pizza it came from couldn't have been any less than a yard across. This was pizza fit for giants. Really good too. Had the hawaiian pizza, my favorite. Then came back and it was a really nice day, about 85-90 degrees outside. So I me and a friend got a beach towel and went and layed outside in the big field between all the dorms. There were numerous frisbee matches, baseball, and football games going on. Never seen so many people outside before. So we did a little sun bathing. Just laying out under the sun for about an hour and a half or so. I'll probably be sun burned tomorrow, but oh well it was really relaxing. Haven't done that in a long time, I should do it more often. Got the idea from Georgia.

So now I've come to the realization that I haven't done any of the work I needed to do this weekend, but I'll get it done by tomorrow. Good times.

Friday Friday
Friday. 4.16.04 10:39 pm
Today is Friday, and that automatically makes it a good day. But it had some help. I got all my classes registered for the fall. I didn't get everything I wanted, mainly the music theory class, but that's alright didn't have my heart set on it anyway. Signed up for an economics couse instead, should be interesting. Then later I got my calc test back, did fairly well so I'm happy about that. Haven't found out if the persons I tutored failed or not. I really hope they didn't, they would just be bad.

Then I remembered that entry from ikimashokie and decided to watch The Ring as I'd never seen it before. That is one scary movie! I was watching in my friend Brian's room since he has a nice TV and a stereo system. It was pretty intense, and then like halfway through his phone rang. It was sooo frightning! We both jumped out of our seats, it wasn't funny at the time, we were scared to death, but afterwards it was pretty funny.

Anyway, I also got to watch some of the robotics competition today. That was cool. And I'm glad Bill won, I was rooting for him.

Its Over
Thursday. 4.15.04 12:59 am
Well the tests are over. Calculus had some hard problems, but I figured most of them out. The first problem on the test just happened to be from a section I didn't study because I figured it wasn't important. Well I guessed wrong, heh. I came up with something for that one, don't know if it was right, but it sounded intelligent, maybe I can fool the grader. Who knows. Computer Science was fairly easy I thought. Except for the fact that the professor kept changing problems in the middle of the exam. For *every* single problem on the test he either: 1) Had to add something to make it clearer 2) Give an example since it was worded so bad 3) Or completely change the question. On one in particular I had just finished writing the code for this function he wanted us to write, about half a page or so. Then as I'm about to move on to the next question, he's like "Oh on question #5 I didn't mean what I wrote, I meant this ..." and he completely rewrites the question! So I have to go back and do the whole thing again. Oh well, it's not like it was too hard, but still its the principle.

I've got my schedule layed out now. Just in time since I signup tomorrow at 9:00 am. Guess I'll have to wake up early, lol. These are the classes I am (tentatively) taking: Differential Equations, Discrete Math, Digital Logic Design, Circuit Analysis, and Intro to Music Theory. And yes the last class is for real. I mean look at the other courses I'm taking, I need something non-science, non-technical and that sounded interesting so I'm going for it.

And I found the site that shows a webcast from the Robotics Compeitition in Atlanta. Go to this NASA site. The ARGS team is in the Courie division. So click and watch!

Update on Stuff
Wednesday. 4.14.04 12:16 am
Well tomorrow's the day, in more ways than one. I have my calculus test and my computer science test tomorrow. Computer science I'm not too worried about (*knock on wood*) but calculus can be intimidating. It was funny I went to meet with the person I'm tutoring to review for the test and they had brought their friends along. "Is it OK if they join the session?" It was like a little class. Anyway those are tomorrow and I'll be glad when they're over.

Also the ARGS robotics team leaves tomorrow for Atlanta, Georgia to go the National FIRST Robotics Compeitition! I so wish I could go, but alas this is not my trip to take. I know I'll be thinking about them all week. Good Luck!! Hopefully I can catch some of the matches on the webcast.

What else is going on ... hmm. I got a new umbrella today. I'm pretty psyched. I had an old umbrella, but today it was raining and I realised that rain was falling on my head despite the fact I had an umbrella up. I look above me and there's this large 1 to 2 inch tear right in the middle. I thought maybe I can deal with this. I closed the umbrella when I got to class and then opened it up afterward when I left. As I opened it I could hear a loud "ripppp." The small 1 inch hole now extended all the way down. So I forced myself to spend some money and get a new one. So I'm happy, yay!

Later.

Easter Break
Monday. 4.12.04 12:13 am
Well I just got back to school from break. It wasn't actually a "break", not like a national holiday or anything, but it was close enough for me. This was certainly a break I'm glad I took.

Now its back to school and tests and preparing for finals and bleh. It would be easy for me say that I'll be glad when this is over. And in a way I will be, but, i don't know, its weird. This year has gone by soo fast and to think that its going to be over, my first year of college. It's that torn feeling. You want to be home with family and friends, but you want to be away from home making new friends and living on your own. Its kind of strange.

Anyway, hope everyone had a happy easter. Eat a Cadbury Creme Egg for me!

Been a While
Saturday. 4.10.04 12:21 am
Yes its been a while since my last post. Let me recap what has happened. On Wednesday I found out that I get to tutor a new person in calculus. If you don't remember from before, I was a tutor for someone in calculus, but after the first test they took after me helping them they failed and withdrew from the course. Well, apparently my professor knew it wasn't my fault, it wasn't, and gave me a new person. Hopefully this will go better. We have a test next Wednesday, so we'll see if it happens again. I hope this isn't a curse.

Oh, I almost fogot about this. On Tuesday our Economics professor went completely psycho. He started off class by drawing a demand curve on the board and asked this guy in the front row what it was. A little background here, the guy he called on has been, i guess you could say, the class clown. He always blurts out completely unrelated stuff in the middle of class and plays devil's advocate with the prof just because. Well ... because I think he just likes to make a fool out of himself. Tuesday was not the day to do that. "What is that I just drew?" demands Prof. Mirman. (Oh and by the way, we've been doing demand curves for who knows how long by now. Sorry to interrupt again.) Anyway he answers his question something to the effect of, "Looks like a few lines on the blackboard to me," with a smug grin on his face. The prof looks up, almost stunned that he was given this answer in front of a 120 person lecture. "You!" he yells out pointing at some random person in the front. "What is that?" "It, umm ... um, looks like a demand curve." "That's because it is a demand curve," the prof replies in a slightly sarcastic tone. "Tell me!" pointing to another person about halfway up the column of seats. "Tell me what a demand curve is." "Umm" Ten seconds pass. The prof points at another student "What is a demand curve?" "Ummm" Five seconds pass. "You! You! You!" each time pointing to someone else. "WHAT IS A DEMAND CURVE!" Repeating it over and over without giving anyone a chance to respond. Then he just throws his arms his and starts ranting. "Why do you come to class? I don't get it. We've been doing demand curves for two months and not-a-one of you can answer me! If one of you can tell me the answer you can all leave right now!" There is a brief silence and then that guy in the front starts to speak. "If we don't answer can we still leave?" That was it. He flipped. "Of course you can leave, you can leave whenever you want! You don't even have to come to this shit of a class! You come because you want to learn not to waste my time!" He turns around and hurls a piece of chalk at the board. It shatters into a fireworks of pieces and a small cloud of chalk dust as it strikes the board with a resounding and echoing *crack*. "JUST ... GO HOME! JUST ... GO F***ING HOME!" And he storms out of the class and slams the door behind him. We all are frozen solid. The same thought was going through everyone's head, "What just happened here?" We sat in silence for a minute or so before a slow trickle of people start to leave. I stayed for about 15 mintues just to see if he would come back. He didn't. So I was talking with the 6 other people that decided to stay late to see if he was coming back. We decided to write up on the board what a demand curve was and everything about them. Thinking he maybe might come back and realize that not everyone in his class is an absolute moron. Don't know if he saw it. Then next class on Thursday he comes in like nothing happened. Doesn't mention it, doesn't alude to it. Nothing. I've heard rumors from upperclassmen that this guy has been known to come to class drunk sometimes. I think that must have been the case.

And in completely unrelated news I found out that on the last week of finals the theater here is playing the Princess Bride! I've always wanted to see that on the big screen. It is such a good movie if you haven't seen it. I'm excited.

Also, I am writing this entry from home. Not my college home, but my real home. There's just something about home that is good. Anyway, I got back Thursday afternoon. I know what you're thinking. "If he came back on a Thursday that must mean he doesn't have Friday classes. I hate you." Not true, I do have Friday classes. But then you're thinking, "but how could you go to them if you're at home?" My answer is, I'm not. "That means you're skipping your classes." Yes, it does. Physics, calculus, and computer science. Haha. Let's face it, no one goes to physics anyway and they still get A's so what's one class going to do, I'm ahead in math, I'm tutor for goodness sakes, and computer science ... well ... I won't touch that one. Anyway I think of it like those Mastercard commercials, "Going to physics -- 1 hour, calculus -- 1 hour, computer science -- 1 1/2 hours, sleeping in to 2:00 in the afternoon in your own bed while your classmates are at school -- priceless." Its not that I don't like school, I really do. Its just nice to get away for a little bit to rejuvenate.

I guess that wraps up this week. Man that was a long post. Maybe I should just return to posting everyday and avoid the essay. Not just for my sake, but so you don't have to read such a monstrosity. You have my respect for making it this far.

Later
