One Week Down
Sunday. 6.20.04 12:40 am
One week is over. Phew.. *wipes sweat from face* No really, it is really hot here! Plus I have to walk a whole bunch every day to get to class and to my job at the help desk. I timed it the other day. I spend about 1 hour 10 minutes each day walking. Just walking from place to place. See it takes about 10-15 minutes to get from my dorm to the dining hall and then 15-20 minutes to get from there to my job. I could take the bus, but it comes every 20-25 minutes so if I were to miss the bus, I'd be s.o.l. to getting to work on time. So I just walk there. Which is ok, I mean its not that bad, but with this heat I'm sweating by the time I get there. Hehe. I looked in the mirror today and my face was slightly pink. Guess I got a little sunburned the other day. Must remember to wear sunblock tomorrow since I'll be outside the whole day at my friend Brian's B-day partay. (Partay not party, lol, lord and lady ``) He tells me they will have 4-wheelers and I'll get to shoot a rifle. So I'm excited. ``

Today was fairly uneventful. I woke up just in time to catch the end of lunch. Got there 2 minutes before they closed at 1:30 pm. Judging by that I'm sure you can tell I slept in. A little over 11 hours of sleep. Yay! After getting back I started homework and worked for about 4 straight hours. Calculus out the wazoo. I figured I should stop when I got a problem wrong because I multiplied x and 3x together and got z squared. That actually happened! I was trying to figure out where I went wrong and found all my x's turned into z's during one step. That's a sign people. Stop! So I did. Then I ordered a pizza from Dominos and ate that while watching Scarface. Wow. That is a very cool movie. Its basically like GTA Vice City: The Movie. I could see a lot of similarities from the game in the movie. The way Tony Montana walked and carried himself. It was like he owned the world. You could feel his presence when he walked into a room. Definitely one of my favorite movies now. Why didn't anyone tell me to watch this one earlier? And the music too. He had nothing, rose to have everything he always wanted only to lose it and realise he didn't have what was really important him.
For my birthday you can get me you *smile* that's what i really want =)
My roommate isn't here. He leaves and goes home on the weekends to work so I have the whole room to myself. So I can basically do what I want. Play music and movies and such as loud as I want. Stay up and control the ac. Its cool. Quite literally with the ac. ``

Later. *kisses* I love you sooo much

Yo ho ho!
Thursday. 6.17.04 10:41 pm
Things have been going good lately. I'm just in an overall great mood. : )
*kisses*
I saw Ben at lunch today. He's one of the guy's I'll be rooming with next year. He apparently moved in a month ago to start weight training and preliminary practices. He's on the football team so he had to move in real early to start getting ready for the new season. And I'm happy. They now have ice cream sandwiches at the dining halls!

My help desk job is going well. Still just listening in on calls. The person I sit with is really quiet on the phone, like sitting there for a minute without saying anything. I just want to be like "Say something!" But I still am not ready to take calls. I'll wait until like Wednesday or something, that should be good. I did take one call though the other day. Helped this guy with his server-side includes. (I know, it sounds like something you shouldn't discuss in public ``) But I helped him and solved his problem.. so yay!
You're emails were so sweet =) Love you

Help Desking
Wednesday. 6.16.04 11:50 am
Well my job yesterday wasn't too bad. I might end up liking it. For the first week at the help desk I'm sitting in with someone else. So in other words I get a headset that lets me listen in on the phone conversation for this one person. This is so I get a chance to hear actual calls and see what the person does to solve them. I'll be doing this for about a week or so and then "when I feel comfortable enough" I start on the phones. The people there are really nice and funny too. When there are no calls people joke around and you can basically do anything you want on the computer if you don't have a call. Solitaire, Internet, instant message, whatever... as long as you drop it when a call comes in, but still. For some reason I just thought they'd put me on a phone the first day, but this week introduction of getting use to everything makes it much less intimidating.

We finally had our hall meeting last night. So I confirmed the fact that other people do in fact live on my hall. As usual the general ice breaker question around the room: name, major, year, and favorite movie. Choices included Shawshank Redemption, Patton, and the Matrices (I found that answer funny ``). Mine was.... well I don't have to say it. You already know! Everyone better IM me (screenname in my profile) with the answer. If you don't get this right I might decide not to keep you as a friend. ``The answer is ... hehe. I know you know. ``

First Class
Tuesday. 6.15.04 11:26 am
Just got back from my first class this morning. Multivariable calculus at 8 am M-F. What was I thinking? `` The professor comes in, puts his stuff down, and looks over at the clock which says 8:00. He then shakes his head and says, "Damn." Everyone started laughing. At least I'm not the only one that doesn't like to get up so early. Set the class off on a light note. His name is Ismar Volic and he has some kind of accent but I can't place it. Kind of a cross between an Arabic and an Italian accent if that makes sense. Its not too strong so you can understand his well, which is good because I worried by looking at his name. Its just enough of an accent to make it interesting to hear him talk. The way he says certain words, it's cool. He passed out an attendance sheet to sign and while it was going around he was like "I don't know what possessed you people to take a math course during the summer. I mean, I get paid to be here, you are paying to be here. Doesn't make sense to me." Everyone got a good laugh out of that. The class being 2 hours and 15 long wasn't bad at all since he takes two 10 minute breaks. So the whole thing ends up being three 45 minute or so sections. But we move *really* fast. Just today we did 3 sections in the book and that was including the 20 minutes at the start of class he wasn't teaching to go over the syllabus. So material is going quick. Must do the homework to. There's like 30 or so problems assigned after every class period and they're all due at the end of the week. So.. slack off on homework for the week and we're stuck with doing 150+ problems Thursday at midnight. Not a situation I want to be in. `` I shalt not procrastinate on homework. That would be murder.

I also start my part time job today. I'll be working at the help desk here at UVA providing tech support. I really hope it goes well, I'm kind of not looking forward to it. *crosses my fingers*

Will It Ever Stop
Monday. 6.14.04 1:49 pm
Hmm... yesterday. What did I do... Well I suppose it started the day before that. I was talking to Brian, my friend and roommate next year, and he said he was coming down to UVA on Sunday. So Sunday morning I met up with him and we went to meet with his friends and eventually ended up at a Chinese Buffet to celebrate his friend Jay's birthday. It was really good food. A few funny things happened though.

First off a bunch of the people there go to same church and they apparently were in charge of making some poster to advertise the church. Like a poster to put up on bulletin boards and such. Well one of the leaders, Mike, was saying how the poster this one guy, Luke, made was completely unacceptable. See apparently Luke had made the poster which consisted of a group of church members making funny faces and weird poses trying to advertise the church's youth group. Mike didn't like the poster because he said it wasn't diverse enough. Apparently there was only one black girl in the picture, every one else was white. So Mike told Luke to change it to add some diversity. Luke goes away and two days later comes back with a new poster with some "added diversity" as he called it. Turns out all Luke had done was photoshop this one guy's face black. He painted a white guy black! That was the story told at the table. Then this big argument ensued. Over whether that was ok to put on the poster. It was absolutely hilarious. People were like "you can't do that, it's racist." And then the rebuttle came, "it's not like I just took the paintbrush tool and wiped it over their face. It was tasteful." "How can blackfacing a guy be tasteful?" "Well I could have shrunk his eyes and made him asian." At that point all the asian's at table errupted, "you can't do that!" Then Bernard, who is black, says "Well what if I was in the picture and you needed more white guys, would you have painted my face white?" Then someone on the other end of the table is like "No because you don't have a white featured face." "What?!" errupts more people. It was all funny, everyone was laughing, all in good humor. No one took offense or anything. The whole thing was just hilarious. Funniest thing I've heard in a while. (The last being the conversation over Tyler's "Felix Mace" icon, hehe)

The second funny thing that happened was that after we all stopped laughing at the whole "painting a white guy black" incident, the servers brought us all fortune cookies. We all open our fortunes. Mine by the way was "An empty stomach is not a good political adviser." Which I think qualifies for one of the worst fortunes I've gotten. What kind of life advise is that? Go stuff yourself otherwise you will overthrow your government? I don't get it. But anyway, lol. Brian, the guy that picked me up earlier in the morning (if you can remember from the beginning of this long entry ``) he gets his fortune cookie, opens it, and cries out, "Where's my fortune?" "What?" We all look at him as he's flipped through all his cookie crumbs from breaking the cookie open. No fortune! He got a cookie without a fortune! Ahaha. We all laughed at him. I have never seen a fortune cookie not have a fortune before. It must mean one of two things. One, this is a death omen and he will fall fatally ill before the week is out. Or... Two, the guy at the fortune cookie factory dozed off for a second and missed a cookie. We all told him it one the first one. Hehe.

After lunch I went with him and some other people over to someone's house to play Halo and just hang out. They had a nice house, two guinea pigs, and one very timid dog. Most dogs are all jumpy and excited when new people come over, Maggie just huddled in the corner, must have been scared. So we played Halo, and I won. `` Under my new nickname that I've taken on in games, Kilika. I think it sounds cool, plus when my parents went to Hawaii a while back they brought me back a keychain with my name on in it "Chris" and my Hawaiian name "Kilika." So I figure its a fitting nickname. After that we all had ice cream. I had the multi-color sherbet. By the way, did you know that the proper spelling is "sherbet" not "sherbert"? Notice the second spelling has two "r"s. Apparently the second "r" was added to make it easier to pronounce. Who knew? Not me, I just thought that was interesting.

So left, their house and then Brian dropped me back off at the dorm. Very quiet. I called up Twyla and we talked for a pretty good while. Oh, I haven't said anything about my phone yet! Hmm... if I tell the phone story it would make this already lengthy entry even longer... Oh well I'll tell it anyway. ``

See everything in my room in cool, I like it. All but the phone. See the phone is just... well weird. It's one of those digital phones, not an analog one. Which means in simple terms the phone is not simple. You know how most phones have a Talk button was can press or on the reciever there's this button that when that when pressed down ends the call? You know, when you put the phone back on the hook the phone hits a little button that ends the call? Well this "special" digital phone we have, has no little button. Apprently there's some kind of pressure sensor or some magnetic thing in the phone that tells it when the phone is on the hook. That part was not working! So the phone would not hang up. It would sit there on the hook and you couldn't turn it off. So after about 5 minutes it would start this insesant alternating tone. Which is of course suppose to tell you that the phone is off the hook. Well... *problem* you can't put the phone back on the hook!!! I take that back you *can* put it back on the hook, but that entails slamming the phone down on the reciever over and over and over again while screaming. The screaming does help. `` After a good amount of elbow grease the phone will actually turn off. But each time after using it, it took more and more time to be able to actually turn it off. Like last night I got it turned off in about 4 minutes or so. Then this morning it took no less than 10 to get it right.

So I phoned up the phone people and they said they could come to fix it today between 2-5. The guy on the phone asks for the number I can be reached. I tell him the number of the phone in the room and he's like "Now the people may call you at this number to let you know they're coming." "Ok" I say, "bye." I put the phone down to hang up. Then I realise it won't hang up, hehe. My problem in the first place. `` So how are the people suppposed to be able to call me? Hehe. Oh well. They came about 2:00 (on time, I'm shocked ``) and took a look at the phone. He picks up the reciever and puts it down. "Hmm... doesn't seem to want to hang up." Duhh, lol. "Hey Frank, go get a new one out of the truck." 5 minutes, in and out. So I now have a new phone and it actually hangs up! Yay!

For some reason I thought my classes started today. My class starts at 8 am so I woke up at 7:00 this morning. Showered got dressed grabbed my backpack and off I went. Got to the class at 7:55 but there was no one there. The door to the class was locked and the lights were off. I waited until about 8:05 or so, but I didn't see anyone. So I walked back to my dorm room kind of confused, "where was everyone?" I got online and checked the class schedule, maybe I had gone to the wrong room or something. Then I saw that I hadn't gone to wrong room.. I had gone on the wrong day. `` Classes start on the 15th, Tuesday, not today. So I got up at 7 am for nothing. Oh well. Then later when my roommate came back he was like, "Man I was dumb this morning. I went and got all my books and showed up for my class. But turns out they don't start till tomorrow." Hehe. So At least I'm not the only person that though that.

What else did I do today... I signed up for my meal plan so I can eat. `` And got pizza for lunch. And got everything situated in my room the way I like it. Oh, and on my TV I get PBS, PAX, and NBC. Two more channels than before, hehe.

Oh, and funny convo today:

Twyla: playing x-2
Twyla: becasue I'm a loser

Moving back In
Sunday. 6.13.04 1:26 am
I'm here. At UVA that is. Just moved into my new room this afternoon to start my one month summer class in multivariable calculus. Well I had a pretty eventful day actually. Here goes for anyone who's interested.

Got up around 10:00 this morning. Got dressed and showered (not particularly in that order) and finished packing my stuff into the cat. Then I had a scrambled egg sandwich for lunch and then my parents and I left for Charlottesville. Two hours later we show up and I expect this big influx of people moving in. Nary a soul to be found. The place was practically empty. Got my key and swipe card and moved my stuff into my room. Man... I really like my room. It's like 1.5 times the size of my old room last semester. It has carpeted floors and has air conditioning. Very nice accomidations. And I met my roommate Vince. Cool guy. Forth year government/politics major.

So after getting my stuff moved in I go with my parents to have dinner at Ruby Tuesday's and we get ice cream at Ben & Jerry's. I got the Oatmeal Cookie Crunch. I've never tried it before, but it was really really good. Anyway, so my parents left and I went back to my room. Talked with Vince for a while and remarked that there was no one else on our hall. He's the only other human being I've seen just about since getting here. I guess everyone's coming tomorrow or Monday. At least I hope so, otherwise this will be a pretty empty hall. Anyway, so Vince has a car and wanted to know if I wanted to go with him to a movie. Well.. it's not like I had any other plans. Hehe. So went to the movies, but got there an hour early so we went to Taco Bell to kill some time. Got the new chicken ranchero tacos with avacado/ranch sauce. Mmm. Good stuff.

Then got to the movies and bought tickets to go see the Chronicles of Riddick. So we get our tickets and then walk inside the theater and there are like *huge* masses of people just standing around and waiting in line to get into the theaters. So we stand at the back and are like "My goodness we could be here all night." Then the annoucer guy says, "We are now accepting all movies except Harry Potter." We wait and look around and *no one* moves. So we creep up slowly to the front and slip in. I can only assume that all of them were waiting for Harry Potter. Omg. Good thing I wasn't going to that movie then, I would probably still be waiting.. that is if they still had tickets. So anyway, the movie wasn't too bad. Far more action than plot. But still enjoyable.
I tell you everything. I want you to know what I'm thinking.
Then I came back to my new home away from home and wrote this entry. Or.. not "wrote" but "am writing" since I am typing it in the present. Oh well, semantics.
I miss you already. *smile* I'll call you Sunday.
Later. *kiss kiss*
