FLASH! Up came "Goose Feather Trees". Here's a pic: Taken from Apple Tree Gallery The story of feather trees... "Goose feather holiday trees originated in Germany in the mid 1800’s when Germany’s forests were rapidly disappearing. Goose feathers were plentiful and these trees began to be made as the alternative to cutting a live tree, thus becoming the first artificial Christmas tree. " Excerpt from Kentucky.gov "German immigrants brought many holiday traditions to our shores, among them, the feather tree. Crafted from wire frames and dyed goose feathers, the pieces became popular in Germany late in the 1800s, when efforts to save woodlands led to the widespread use of artificial Christmas trees. It was President Theodore Roosevelt who sparked interest in feather trees in the United States. An avid conservationist, Roosevelt campaigned against felling live evergreens for Christmas trees..." Excerpt from Magazines.ivillage.com They look just like the regular hard plastic artificial trees. But! Come on, it's made of hundreds of soft, cuddly, fluffy feathers. Obvious good difference. Hmm...I want one...maybe I should make one myself. It doesn't seem so hard, they give you directions!! There's a art/craft store a few blocks away. And December's creeping up to us...oh, they also have ones for Halloween. Should I make one for both holidays, one for each or just one for whichever month I finish in?
