About Art4TheHomeless
Imagine... a movement inspired by the arts to open the eyes of Americans to the plight of their own people. Imagine, through art, music and poetry, we are shining a much needed light on our own crisis: HOMELESSNESS

Art4TheHomeless was once a blog called Colors of Ink with Blogcharm, which closed down. Nutang, became the new home of Colors of Ink and was renamed Art4TheHomeless, by a really good friend, Samantha Medd. She is now the Co-Founder of Art4TH.

Now Art4TH is a 501(c)(3) Nonprofit Organization that unites artists of all venues to promote homeless awareness in the US.

Art4TH does this through the Art4TH Webzine, a monthly online magazine that features a musician whose music plays throughout the website, a feature artist, and a feature writer while also featuring a homeless relief organization. All artists featured retain their copyrights and all of it is free. If you would like to be a featured artist, musician, or writer contact me at [email protected]

7 Cheese Chicken and Mushroom sauce with Angel Hair
Sunday. 10.11.09 7:37 pm
This is what I am having for dinner tonight yummm

Get some portobella mushrooms and some baby bella mushrooms

You will also need red pepper, green onions, olive oil, Kroger brand Sandwich Oil mix with Oregano, ground pepper, ground Italian herbs, one tomato.
You will also need (depending on how many you are trying to serve) a chicken breast. I only fixed this for two and I never measure.

Okay. Chop all the veggies and chicken up and throw it in the frying pan. Saute for a few minutes.

Cook some angel hair pasta. When that's done, be sure to strain and rinse with COLD WATER

Back to the sauteed veggies and chicken

Get a small bowl and a couple teaspoons of flour. mix with a little warm water and stir really fast. Put in with the vettgies. Now get the mixed cheese packs: I used the Kroger brand 6 cheese--mozzerella, parmesan, romano, asaigo, provelone and fontina. Also use some chedder cheese and mix a little milk. Stir.

Enjoy!

My birthday is tomorrow and I am
Tuesday. 11.3.09 9:10 am
....working! As I look back on this past year, I thank God for all the good things that have come to pass in my entire life. In 1991, the day before my 10th birthday, we were living in a condemned trailer with nothing but water in White, GA. Our family wanted nothing to do with us--those who knew of our existance--so my last day of school was my tenth birthday. That day, we left. Mom had her welfare check and bought me a Monopoly game and we drove. We ran out of gas in Texas where a church gave us money to get to Shreveport, LA, where we stayed in a homeless shelter. That shelter, The Providence House, and the kind people--the kind STRANGERS who had their own families but cared about us, inspired me all of my life.

As I look back on that today, I realize that my whole life has been that of survival, and of hope. It's not about making it to the next day, but it's about being inspired to go on, being filled with hope that not only you WILL make it, but YOU may be able to help others make it as well. Art4theHomeless is my dream, and it will be my light, it will be the inspiration of others to survive--to know that they are not alone as they go through their trials. Not only is God with them, but there are people like myself who have been where they are and are devoting their lives to make a difference.

All I wanted this year for my birthday is this one thing: To incorporate Art4TH in the STATE of GA which is the first step in becoming a nonproft organization. It's done--that step. So this year, I will be working the morning shift, and tomorrow night, who knows :)

Homeless at Christmas, 1993
Monday. 12.14.09 3:34 pm
Shreveport, LA 1993

My mother and I had just moved to Louisiana. We were staying at The Providence House. It was the Evergeen House then. We had been there since the week before Thanksgiving. I was being transferred into a new school, in a new state. This wasn't new to me though. I had moved around so much as a child, my mother wanted to keep us off the streets.

I knew that I wasn't going to get anything for Christmas because Santa didn't know where we were.

The shelter had a huge Christmas tree in the family room with presents under the tree but not real presents--only decoration.

I remember being in the family room on Christmas Eve. It was in the afternoon. Christmas dinner was being served and KSLA News 12 was blaring on the TV about Santa's leaving the North Pole. Someone was playing Christmas carols on the piano.

My mother and I ate and went to our little room. We shared a bathroom with another family. Later that night, Mom was asleep. There was a tap on our bathroom door. It was one of the other kids.

"Santa's coming! Let's go down!"

I remember hesitating. We weren't supposed to be out of our rooms after nine--or ten--I can't remember.

I went with Deedee and her brother and we silently padded down to the stairs. So far, no one spotted us. I opened the door to the main hall and the three of us softly went down the stairs. It was slow because we wanted to be quiet. I still didn't think Santa was going to find us.

Cold air greeted us. Someone was holding the door open. We heard people talking. We continued on down the stairs and finally saw what was going on: There were several of Santa Clauses of all shapes and sizes bringing in huge black trash bags full of stuff.

Deedee, Matt and I sat there for a couple of hours watching them bring in the bags. I remember telling them that perhaps Santa knew the other families were here but my mother didn't have a chance to inform him that we were here. Deedee said that she would share her gifts with me if we didn't get anything. I just knew there was no way I could have a present because we had no family and no one to know where we were.

Finally, the Santa Clauses started to leave and one of them noticed us. Deedee and Matt bolted. Santa looked at me and smiled. He held his finger to his lips as if to say, "I won't tell anyone that you are down here," winked and walked out the door.

I ran up the stairs to where Deedee and Matt were. They asked me what had happened and I told them.

We all went back to our rooms where our mothers were waiting on us. My mom scolded me and their mom scolded them. It wasn't too bad since we didn't get caught by any of the staff and after we told our parents what we saw and that Santa smiled and winked at me, we knew we weren't in any trouble.

I finally went to sleep. Mom and I were woken up by someone pounding on the door.

The staff were singing Christmas carols and yelling "Merry Christmas!"

Mom said, "Johnna, look!" as someone brought us seven huge bags of gifts. I heard Deedee and Matt squealing in the room next to us. I couldn't speak. There were several of presents with my NAME on them! Not just random gifts but gifts with my NAME on them.

Deedee came and said "I TOLD you! He would find you!"

Many of the presents were jigsaw puzzles with like 5,000 pieces. There was one beautiful glass babydoll. There were clothes, Barbies, and tons of stuffed animals.

I had more toys than I ever had any Christmas. I remember jumping up and down, crying and screaming--with joy.

We went to breakfast for Christmas morning and later on there were more people with food and candy.

Nonprofit Status
Sunday. 2.14.10 12:53 pm
I just wanted to update everyone on the Art4TH Nonprofit Status.

Some time this year, the IRS is coming out with the new Cyber Assistant program for the 501c3 nonprofit organizations that are applying.

With this, there will be a $200 processing fee which is better than the new $400 fee. I have the money to go ahead with the $400 fee but I want to wait and see if this Cyber Assistance thing works because it would be so nice to save the money.

Also, if anyone doesn't use the Cyber Assistant the processing fee will be $850.

Meet Robin, a homeless mother
Monday. 2.22.10 12:41 pm
I have been writing and talking with Robin Ivy, who is homeless with her daughter, Kayla.

I am telling you about her because I want YOU TO KNOW that not every homeless person is an annoying panhandler who is pushy for cash. Not every homeless person is a drug dealer who is looking for sex and drugs.

Robin's Story:

August 2009

Robin her daughter Kayla who is 19, were put out due to family problems. At the time, she was living with her older daughter and their family. Robin contacted her son and he let them stay, but instead of showing his mother the love she gave to him, he kicked them. He dumped them at the Nashville Rescue Mission.

Three days later Robin found herself getting really sick. She walked the 11 blocks to the nearest hospital and was diagnosed with pneumonia. While she was in the hospital, her and her daughter's beds were taken by another homeless family.

They lived on the streets.

A mother and daughter living on the streets in America is not a safe thing. A kind stranger warned her that the police were picking up homeless people and locking them up. Fearing for her and her daughter's safety, Robin went to Tent City--a homeless community in Tennessee.

Robin and Kayla have been on the move. They went to Kentucky to stay with a friend but that didn't work out. She tried her daughter again. Her own family turned against her. I totally know what she is going through as my mother and I have been there. Our family didn't want us either.

Wendell Segroves, according to Robin, was and is their guardian angel. He opened his home--a tent-- to them and made sure they had food and were safe. Robin had high hopes that things would work out with their families so she tried again.

Things were starting to work out with her other daughter until she kicked them out. Again her son and his wife came to her rescue and Robin discovered that they too, were homeless along with Robin's 7 year old granddaughter.

Robin and her family are just a fraction of many of America's 3,000,000 + homeless. That's right, over three million Americans are homeless.

Shelters are full and are doing the best they can, but they are not enough. We as Americans have got to come together and come up with a solution.

WE CAN RAISE MILLIONS FOR HAITI IN MERE HOURS

Why can't we do the same for AMERICA?

This is Robin's message to anyone who is homeless

This is to let anyone who is homeless especially with children to seek help. Call you homeless agency and let them help you they have most likely been where you are now. Don't be ashamed. We are not ashamed. My name is Robin and I am 18, my daughter is 19 and yes we are homeless May God bless you and keep you safe!
