Discrimination
Thursday. 10.11.07 9:12 pm
This little world of ours is very petty. Ever notice?

Example 1: I cut my hair
Result: First time I was ever accused of lying--TO MY FACE--of all things, by a security guard. First time I was ever accused of skipping a class--BY A TEACHER. First time a teacher (same one) said, "Oh, don't give me that emotional trip" like it was nothing (a different teacher had said that to me before, but she's a really close family friend and known for making kids cry/being a bitch, but that's a story for another time >.>)

Apparently, short hair makes me different from all the other asian kids. Asian girls are known for haveing long black hair. There are two types: ponytails usually mean good kids who study(or not, depending on their IQ), long straight hair meant unabashed girls always around guys--may or may not skip. I'm in the middle so I suppose they don't know how to make of me.

I've always been proud of what I was given. A face and personality that can juggle the expectations of both parts of me: the American side and the Chinese side. I can look like the sweet, innocent, obediant, proper asian daughter OR the 'hip', confident, New York gal. Not that I am 'hip' or use the word 'hip'. >.> Y'know, my most recent epiphany is that I won't be able to pull of the sweet, innocent, etc. thing in front of Americans anymore. They won't get it anymore. *shrug*

Now that I have short hair...it's not as easy to juggle. It's as if...I have a 'stylish' cut and now I'm not 'good', a 'good' girl in either circles anymore. Not that I fit properly into either in the first place, but no one else knew that. Now people just don't know how to deal or where to 'put' me.

Damn! 'Put' me. Stupid cateogories, otherwise known as stereotypes or generalizations. Have I ever told you guys how much I hate those? Wonderful, they're absolutely wonderful. They are like beautiful wild flowers in a sunny meadow. I wish...

Haha, this isn't the only example. I'm sure you can think of others, no need for me to go on and on. I can't think of any others at the moment anyway. XD Haha. Mm, this actually happened...last month. A few weeks ago, maybe two? Yeah...I was so pissed.

But like I said before, my anger comes and goes. It doesn't tangle my 'fur', if I had any. Well, unless someone brings it up and any inappropriate opinions/statements come out...*narrows eyes* Won't forget the New York parta me. In my face? Back atcha!

Ok, that should be enough. XD Good night!

--Eh-hem. Seems I can't spell today. Pretend you didn't see all those mistakes, will ya? Thanks. ;)

*huggs* Nothing I can say to make the hurt you've felt go away. Just be strong and don't back down -- not that you need the advice. Sounds like you kind of kick ass anyway...

.... What? Wow.. They're being so ridiculous. So Asians with short hair are always the liars, cheaters and skippers? *rolls eyes* I know many Asians with long hair which does that.

Our little world is so colourful that I can't bare to look at it anymore.

Oh.. my bad.. *sigh* still, stereotyping is so common.. racism too.

not to be theodd ball out, but I can think of a TON of sterotypes for Asians, and well alot of other races....and it sickens me to think that in all the advances our society has made, one of the more important thing continually gets over looked.

I am sorry that you have to face that kind of bullshit.....pardon my language.

While I agree with dad that there are many stereotypes that are put with Asians, I've never thought the way we do our hair being one of them. I usually keep my hair long, straight and unless I need it out of my face it's down my back. Have you ever thought it wasn't that you cut your hair, that's just a kawinky-dink? Maybe your teachers always thought that way and have finally spoken out about it.

The way I handle stereo types is that I pick the fun ones and do those. What? I'm supposed to know every Asian language (or at least Korean)... Fine, then I pick driving like a crazy woman! What? I'm supposed to want a family of 15? Then I'm going to make sure I'm good in math! I'm supposed to be a skinny tooth pick and no more then 5 feet? Then I'm going to pretend I don't know English when I don't want to talk to you! MUWAHAHA!

Also dad you seriously need to take a chill pill. (God have I shown my age again with that term?) Most cultures bring those stereo types on themselves. They promote it, they exploite it and fact it...most of the time it fits!

u know... i sometimes feel like i'm an ugly duckling in the family. if u feel u have been discriminated because of ur short hair ... i feel i have been discriminated for all my life in my family.

my mum and sis like to dress up. so they dress much much nicer than me whenever they go out. and they have all kinds of clothes. on the other hand, i dress very simple and conservatively. so sometimes i feel i have to dress up because of them. and sometimes friends would tell me why i don't dress up like my sis and mum. this has been ongoing for years.

but i don't really care because whatever i dress is what i am.
