SOHH Excited About Janet Jackson, SOHH Soulful Top 5
    Thursday. 9.14.06 8:13 pm
You'd be officially a HATER if you aren't the least bit excited about Janet Jackson's new music video "So Excited" from the highly anticipated cd 20Y.O

Yesterday BET premiered the new video on "Access Granted." Janet reunited with director Joseph Kahn for not only an homage to her past music video legacy but also to continue to trailblaze in the artform by incorporating a new x-ray technology never before used by the director

Fuck Hype Williams. This precisely the type of video fans are accustomed to from Janet; a highly stylized, forward-thinking, envelope-pushing unique visual experience with a sex appeal only Ms. Jackson can deliver. A sex appeal that is no doubtedly the point of reference for up and coming sex sirens like Ciara, Beyonce, Lil Kim and Ashanti.

After seeing the premiere of "So Excited," there is no doubt every step team, aspiring dancer, voguer, choreographer and talent show contestant will be trying to recreate the choreography for their own presentations. AHHHH! Take that and rewind it back!

And while you are still at the water cooler talking about Whitney Houston filing for divorce, we were compiling our
SOHH SOULFUL TOP 5 SONGS OF THE MOMENT!

    5. Lil Mo - "Never Cheat On U Again"

    4. Robin Thicke feat. Faith Evans - "Got 2 Be Down"

    3. Tank - "Freaky"

    2. Cherish - "Chevy"
Y'all got the album by now.

    1. Danity Kane- "Right Now"

And in case you haven't seen my interview with Danity Kane check it out. They do a hot acapella to "Ride With You" at the end.

Lastly, since we were talking about remixes earlier this week. One of my favorite bootleg remixes is Alicia Key's "Karma" remixed with Stevie Wonder's "Superstition". Have a listen.

I thought Janet's video was off the hook. I love the song, dances and the whole x-ray look!

Posted by: Sparkle* at September 14, 2006 10:04 AM

Good Morning Soulman! Janet's video is HOT! I love it and she made sure her titties were cover too, lol. Really feeling the danity kane track.

Posted by: Layla at September 14, 2006 10:05 AM

    Hey SOHH... what's up?

I am absolutely loving the new JANET video. I think she certainly put these other chicks in line. The imaging was great. The song is fire. I was surprised to see KHIA's ugly has hemmoraging her ugly mouth on the song... but I digress. Everything was perfect. And the end was sick! It was surreal. My only problem was that I think it was "dark." When I think of being excited, I see bright colors. Nevertheless the vid was great. One of the better ones from any female rnb artist this year...

    TOP 5
    Johnta Austin- Turn It Up
John Legend- Save Room (Vid made it)
    Beyonce- Irreplaceable
    Lionel Richie- Call It Love
Danity Kane- Come Over(Interlude) Should have been a song in my opinion.

OK, so Ms. Lady right here dropped some jewels about radio and the program directors in the midst of her conversation. Here's my question - why does the hip-hop community - artists, fans etc. always lash out at the "bullshit" artists in this game who don't have any control over SHIT? Why aren't people (besides Afrika Bambataa) taking on the powers that be that control radio. Why do I not hear anyone calling out the BOSSES OF THE BOSSES. Who is Jimmy Iovine's boss? Who does he answer to? Who does Lyor Cohen answer to? Those are the people that have our culture divided. When I was a shorty I remember getting Doggystyle and Midnight Marauders back to back weeks. It wasn't no categories to that shit. Either you liked it or you didn't. It wasn't "Oh, I'm getting a gangsta rapper this week, oh I'm getting some real hip-hop this week." People need to open they eyes and stop arguing amongst each other on blogs and direct that venom towards the muthafuckas at the tippy top cause they laughin they ass off right now at us, our culture, and everybody associated with it - while they get richer.

Fest, I was walking through the mall earlier today and your album was bumping out of a store. Blue Collar is quality product. I think you have the right idea by trying to spread it by word of mouth. Remember Jill Scott? I only knew of her because I'm a Roots fan, but the average spoon-fed listener didn't know who the hell she was. Her album came out with no promotion, the first one that is. Next thing you know, the word spread on a banging album and boom! The buzz got up and the label jumped on it. Keep on, man! Keep on!

    Selam brother Rhyme,

I wholeheartedly agree with the insightful lady's assesment that this ain't no failure at all. I am gauging this not just on the fact that it aint never a failure if you are doing what you love and loving what you do but on the fact that artists like you are the ones who inspire people like myself. I am a member of an East African hip hop group whose inspirations are constantly being fueld by artists like yourself and the Commons, the Mos Defs, the Kwelis, The Lauryn Hills, The Roots etc. You guys are inspiring us to take hip hop and make it the voice that we need it to be...for us, for our people, for our nation and more.

Stay up brother and you will always have our support!

Hold on homie. I'm kind of trying to roll with you Rhyme and feel what you saying - but to say that this may be the "most impressive comment you've heard yet". That's a "Negro Please" XXL comment right there. Not that she isn't speaking realness, but what I mean is everything she said has been said time and time again by many people. If you are going to blog, make sure people can take what you say serious because you're an artist first and not one of these professional bloggers.

all u need to sell a lot of record is at least one huge hit single, then people might start checking for your shit.otherwise they wont even bother because there are way TOO MANY artists out there who could swear that they are very talented and no way in hell will people give them a chance if they that artist doesnt have a well known good song or is not famous.when will u ever get that through your head????many good mcs have come and faded because of this one simple thing!look at nas,why do u think that he didnt do big numbers after his second album??all this radio talk or the radio playing your sleep-inducing song aint gonna help your sorry ass!they can play it a million times in one day, bottom line is:DO THE RELEVANT AUDIENCE(people who BUY cds not the bootleggers) like it.critics can give u 5 mics all they want but they wont sell your records.maybe then once your name is big you can start focusing on so-called "real music" which can be quite boring sometimes.

Off the fukkin' meter. I hope everything works out for you. I know how hard it is. Fukk that major label shit if they don't wanna grind. That independent spirit is why the South is winning. Even after they get signed, they don't sit around and wait for the label. If ya' single doesn't pop RIGHT AWAY, the label stabs you in the back. It even happened to Mobb Deep's G-Unit album. I'm done blabbing for now, though. Bottom Line, hot album. I'm gonna get 2-3 sold for you dogg. LoL.

So when the album dropped I copped it and it was fiyah. Keep spitting flames and your time will come. I know there is mad pressure to sell on artist but why is there not mad pressure on record labels to promote these artist. I am from the south and some of the music down here is for the kids and I need some grownfolk music. The Roots and Meth did not get any real promotion. But I copped them too. I'm glad you can swap spit with your sister and get her on here to make a corny video about her saying why she "Feels" you(no pun intended)(maybe a little). I'm glad you can get salty at the south for selling 100 to 200 TIMES as many records as you have total, with some of the most horrible shit. And to let you know I'm from the Bronx... Where hiphop was created and I've seen a lot of talent come and go. I can tell you truthfully that you're a FUCKING BACKPACKER! I was the second hand man to L.A. Reid at DEF JAM and now put on respected acts that get signed to Jimmy Iovine and Interscope. Honestly, I'd put your CD right under El Gant. Where the fuck that bitch go? That's most likely what they'll say about you when your phony facade dries up (if they'll talk about you at all). Rhymefest, a lot of people across the country have already said countless times what this lady has mentioned on her video, about you and other talented artists who get caught in industry bull. 15K sold the first week is relative, first off all, to the buying public. Many people dont realize that rap music BUYERS would rather purchase Young Joc than Rhymefest - because Joc's music is more tailored towards what they would like to listen to. Its that simple. If you released this album a decade ago, we would not have the same scenerio, because the demographic of rap music buyers has changed dramatically (obviously - people who buy rap as a whole have become satisfied with increasingly simplified, glamorized music). If I was a competitive, money hungry artist in the game only to try to sell records, I would consider this a failure, but if I was (and am) a true artist making music because I love it no matter who listens or buys it, then I would consider myself blessed to have 15,000 people who consider my music important enought to spend their money on my creative visions. If one person appreciates my music, then its worth it. Your music has influenced many people and that's what's important. And you already know that foolish people will respond to posts about you and from you with malice and unnecessary anguish towards you. Those people have not truly analyzed music or artists with an objectionable spirit, and thus have rendered their comments useless, baseless, and irrelevant. I am a fan of your music. Please do not stop, only grow and continue in the path only you can take as Rhymefest. Thank you for your willingness to release quality in a time of quantity.

The rap industry sucks right now for some of the same reasons that the U.S. is in Iraq. People are brainwashed. People don't remember that "Laffy Taffy" was the most paid for play song in the history of radio...and did they sell as much as 50 or Em ever did? no... Is D4L didn't even go plat...just check riaa.com. Neither did Yung Joc, or Dem Franchize Boys, or most of the shit you hear on the radio 24/7. The new industry con is to ship out 1 million records so that you get a plaque your first day. But the label heads for the groups I mentioned didn't even do that for them because of how much of a risk it would be. Plus the majority of all rap sales don't come from the "hood" anyways. Just food for thought for the deaf, dumb and blind...The real know the real!

You Named Artists Favorably That Have Been Accused Of Industry Tactics, Payola Or Otherwise. Did You Actually Check The Single Sales For That Song? Regardless D4L DID THEY JOB AND SOLD RECORDS, WITHOUT USING ANOTHER ARTIST AS A SCAPEGOAT FOR THEY FAILURES. Its Unfortunate That Some Of There Other Guys Gotta Talk Down On Them, In Hopes Someone Will Pay Attention To Them.

    *

What is wrong with you people (Mari and Keyez)? How is selling ONE record a success? The whole purpose of putting a record out is to appeal to a mass of people, not one or two. You can make songs at your house and give them to friends if thats all your looking for. This dude Rhymefest is a failure, especially by the majors standards. 35,000 is great for an independant in that same amount of time because they have limited distribution, no video, and bigger profits. an independant will see $200,000 - $300,000. Rhymefest ain't gonna see none of that because he has to recoup for a video, promotions and to make his album. This is a business and if you don't turn a profit then it's a failure. This dude will not hit 100,000 in sales. He has nothing in rotation any anywhere and no buzz with a major behind him. He has the internet which is the whole world and I bet amazon hasn't sold one cd since he started this blog. His image is wack. Neither Kanye or Common act like gangters but they have maketable images, a sense of style, and GOOD songs with substance that can still be played on the radio. Since your record label has already set you up with a fanbase go independant at least you will get paid.

But I didn't go look it up first. And sure enough, ne-yo got his plaque on the day he debuted. The proof that Laffy Taffy was payola is they fact that all those people who supposedely "requested" that song, didn't buy the album. But T.I. went platinum, and slowly but surely, so did Chamillionare...

A Tribe Called Quest and Outkast Collabo?
    Thursday. 9.14.06 1:27 am
DJ Drama has put out word that the members of A Tribe Called Quest and OutKast want to do a super-collaboration mixtape as well. We've heard about it for a minute but the buzz is still circulating so it might be going down.

    'Dre 3000:
"I was talking toQ-Tip the other day, and he said, 'Come to the studio. I was going to ask him if it would be all right to do me, Big Boi, Tip and Phife on one record."

    From Phife:
"I was just in L.A. and we went to Big Boi's [video] shoot for 'Morris Brown,' " said Tribe's Phife Dawg, who definitely wants Outkast to appear on his upcoming solo LP, Songs in the Key of Phife. "I view them as one of the most amazing groups ever. They never were followers. They set their own path, they made their own lane in this game, and you always have to appreciate that. That's what makes true artistry to me, when you take risks."

So look out for that, this could be a major one. Let's make it happen. Either way Drama is said to be working on an exclusive 'Kast mixtape.

And incase you weren't feeling the Idlewild joint (I don't know why you wouldn't though), Outkast has a mixtape out with all the classics on it. It's a two-disc CD hosted by DJ Scream and it's on point, I promise.

Also keep your eye on these mixtapes already out...

Cassie Still Has A "Long Way 2 Go," Beyonce Gets the "Greenlight"
    Thursday. 9.14.06 1:18 am
Amidst all the hoopla of Beyonce being certified gold during her first week of sales of the much-talked about sophomore effort B'Day, Bad Boy, the little engine that could, released Cassie's second video, "Long Way 2 Go."

Overall the video is pretty good. Emphasis on "pretty." The styling, the choreography, the Ryan Leslie cameo.... I get it. But for some reason, Cassie ain't really selling it. Or not the way you'd think someone with all these smoke and mirrors should. She seems even more rehearsed than ever before. By now we are all past her mediocre singing (and that is being generous, 'cause these days chicks like Monica's singing is just mediocre), but yeah we are over her mediocre singing. So what's left... Hair? Nails? Makeup? I mean she's got all the right ingredients for one of the best bukakkes this side of Osaka, but seemingly this girl is playing dress up when we'd much rather her undress.

Yep... she's got a "long a way to go." And for some reason, I don't think she's even worth the bullet.

However the one chick that get's the greenlight, whether by hook or crook is Beyonce. Yeah, yeah, I am as tired of typing her name as you are of reading it, hearing it, and finding new variations or words that rhyme with it. But hateration aside, one must bow down to Sasha's twin sister. Although she is the least favorite of the twins, she did score one of the highest debuts this year and she did it her way. No Sasha, no stripper-like choreography and all in that Target-like brand known as Dereon.

Brace yourselves we are in for at least another full year of Beyonce's force feeding. She said on MTV that she is solely responsible for the success or failure of this CD. Every dog has their day, but damn seems like everyday lately has been B'Day.

To make it easier on our sensitive stomachs we might as well jump on and ride this ride until it's out of gas.

Check out her peformance of "Greenlight" on "Good Morning America."

Also check out this interesting piece written on Bey's career.

But wait, there's more.... We know how to keep it moving. Check out our new joint of the day... emphasis on new. It's from Ruben Studdard and is said to be his first single from his forthcoming studio album.

Listen to "Teddy Bear" from The Return:

    What up, all?
Well, I'm gonna need Beyonce to stay out of my iTunes b/c Green Light is the only song I have downloaded so far to decide if I want the album and then she releases it.
Cassie? I have to say that the song is catchy and they did right by coming with a song where she sings only a chorus, but I'm still not sold. And PS: Why is she looking at chick's profiles on her laptop? LOL
And Ruben Studdard just gets no play for me.
