LL Cool J's Def Jam Dis Falling on Deaf Ears
    Tuesday. 9.19.06 10:04 pm
For the record, Todd Smith was wack. And that horrifying lead single, no matter what old-school jumpoff they reworked, made that tired broad's singing skills look even worse than what I had first perceived.

Sometimes, when your time is done, your time is done. And there's nothing you can do about it. He's been on it since '84, which makes him a legend, so all reverence is due in that aspect of it. But when your prime has passed, your prime has passed, and when all fails, there's no one else to blame but yourself.

I almost fell over laughing in my seat when I read about LL Fool J standing next to 50 Cent, sucking him off, blasting Def Jam's promotional skills. While I agree that Def has failed to properly market more than a few of their artists, LL received all the "TRL", BET, and street team promo he could possibly get. And what's funny to me is that back in July, the next set of vinyl distributed nationally for LL was the 50 Cent-featured "Bump This," which was ... wack. Even after the second single, "Freeze," bricked and froze off into nonexistence, Def still took the risk of pushing yet another single. So blasting Def? Blasphemy.

Hmmm... Sit and ponder this one: Is it the label's fault that the DJs didn't want to play this poor excuse for a club banger? No. Was it the label's fault that the program directors didn't want to add the stupid song to radio rotation? No. It is, however, LL's fault that Todd Smith had absolutely nothing to work with. So while he's blaming the label for his flopped LP, I haven't a clue. But then again, he is from Queens, so I guess this is where the 50 Cent dickriding comes from. Give me a break.

Someone by the name of Dare Lewis wrote to me:

"I'm kinda salty about LL rolling with 50. Over the years, I've found that he's always down for someone to pull his ass out of the fire but has never helped anyone get on in his entire career. For a guy who's been out since 1984, he's never put one rapper on. Even Heavy D put a nigga on.

Todd Smith has to be one of the worst LL Cool J albums behind 14 Shots To The Dome & Walking With A Panther [excluding the more recent garbage]. LL is very critical of Def Jam, but he's acting like he gave them a 'hot' album to work with. He released a 'club' record as his first single with no street single.

This negro is so disconnected with the streets it's not funny. LL is no longer street or pop. He's straight Hollywood. This dude doesn't even do mixtapes. Negro Please."

Nigga please. If you think 50 cosigning you is making you look "cool" to the youngn's who only remember you from Phenomenon, then you're sadly mistaken. And I'm not saying this because I can't stand duke, but if you think 50 can save your career, then you've clearly lost your way. 50 can't even save the artists on his own roster. That corny single -- that did nothing -- should've said it all.

Man up and take responsibility for your own or sit down and shut up. Why can't legends ever be satisfied?

    Beauty, Brains and Ambition
    Tuesday. 9.19.06 10:08 pm
No, no, no. Sit down. I am not about to get in a long winded rant on Beyonce. Quite the contrary. Today's headline is about of a trio of women. Each of whom are noted for either their beauty, their brains or their ambition.

    Kelis:

She would be the beauty. After listening to Kelis Was Here, her most recent CD, I was sure Kelis would make some noise with music lovers. The album is bangin'. But every time I try to sell someone on it, I realized that I'd always have to pull out her trump card to keep their attention; her beauty. Vocally, Kelis ain't shattering glass no time soon. But her visual is quite sickening. Her new image took her sexy up about three or four notches and reinvention among black girls is a hard thing to pull off.

Soon I began to realize that Kelis' style and beauty is her gimmick. It is her selling point and at the end of the day you can't call up beauty on your playlist. Personality-wise she is cold fish; leaving a lot to be desired. Already rumors are flying that she'll be signing with Def Jam as soon as Jive finishes chewing her up and spitting her out. Hmmm, I wonder how she tastes.

    Michelle Williams:

Michelle is Destiny's Child's snapple. Like Ashanti, she isn't #1 (Coke) and she isn't #2 (Pepsi). She's #3... with an appeal and taste all of her own. Michelle is who I would discern is the smartest in the group. The story goes that she was pawned off on Destiny's Child by Monica whom she used to sing background for. Her real name supposedly isn't Michelle but I remember in an interview a few years back she told a reporter that it didn't matter that she had to change her name, and it didn't matter that she wasn't the lead. All that mattered to her was she got to travel the world and sing... getting paid was just a bonus. Smart girl, although I am sure that footage has been destroyed.

Despite what is reported on other websites, the song -- "Love Thang" -- that is floating around the internet is NOT a new song by Michelle. Although she is reportedly recording, Michelle is building her own audience through speaking engagements, professional team sports ownership and staying as far away from (DING!) as possible. Kelly, are you paying attention?

    Ciara:

Although Ciara has proven to be both smart and beautiful, it's her ambition that keeps her afloat the most. Her voice, airy and light at best. However, her drive to succeed in an already overcrowded field helped her find an open lane. A lane that is part Janet Jackson and part Aaliyah. Janet herself even admits that Ciara's most recent video "Get Up" from the Step Up soundtrack reminds her of herself.

Ciara, with the help of peeps like Jazze Pha, Missy Elliott and Bangladesh made a dollar out of fifteen cents. There is no way you first heard "Goodies" and thought she would have one of the most-anticipated sophomore CDs. Her upcoming album is titled Evolution. I for one am very interested in seeing if indeed she experiences an evolution. "Get Up" is very "Goodies" but it's for a soundtrack and I am sure the movie house paid for a familiar Ciara. But trust, we are watching... and waiting.

The new joint of the day "Beautiful Transformation" is by Brooke Hogan featuring Stacks and of course it's produced by Scott Storch.

In my opinion, Kelis should be a model.

Michelle should keep doing what she is doing.

And I really like Ciara, so we'll see.

Kelis' CD is bangin'? Aside from "Living Proof" I would say, not so much.

    Good morning.

    Good morning!

Soulman-thank you for showing Ciara love. People always have something negative to say about her but they can never say she don't work hard and like you said she is ambitious.

    Posted by: Brandi<3 at September 19, 2006 10:11 AM

Is it just me or does it seem like Kelis doesn't even care to be a singer? She jus doesn't seem passionate about it. IDK it's prolly jus me.

    ^^^^

Ciara gonna do the damn thing. She has found a way to be competitive but with a style of her own.

Once you have carved your own lane, nothing left to do but let peeps follow you.

Posted by: SOHH Soul Man at September 19, 2006 10:14 AM

    Hey SOHH.

I can see your point on KELIS' beauty being the one defining thing about her (aside from the extra crispy fried voice). Actually, let me go ahead and say that NOW her beauty is what people know and love her for. BEFORE it was the hair and screaming. It seems to me that I am like on of the only people on this blog that still am not turned on by her album. And refuse to be sold by it. Simply because I don't think that she has talent. I love her to death- don't get me wrong. But, if I wanted to spend money on someone for their beauty, I'd turn to my mother.

Ciara... I think that she relies mostly on her dancing ability. I mean, the only video of hers (song) that did not get rotation, was the one that she wasn't dancing in. It was some slow jam. I don't know. As a fan, I prefer to hear her less and see her dance more.

No comment on MICHELLE. Lol. Actually, I have a comment, but I won't say it.

What about artists like CLAUDETTE ORTIZ that can sing and are beautiful, but still don't get shine? Yesterday, I was wondering where she is going to fit in the whole scheme of things when her album drops...

Claudette was hot in that song with Wyclef... what was it called? "Two Wrongs Don't Make It Right" or something like that.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Whitney Houston Not To Divorce Bobby?
    Tuesday. 9.19.06 11:16 pm
    WHITNEY AIN'T DIVORCING BOBBY!

YEEEEEAAAAAAAHHHH (Said like a Young Jeezy ad lib.) My girl Shanny Shan has the real dope, homey! Translation: she's got the inside scoop on Bobby and Whitney's looming "divorce." Ryan Cameron of V-103 has word from a very reliable source that the Bobby/Whitney divorce is NOT going to happen. According to his source, this action is just an aggressive threat from Whitney – a slap up if you will. This represents her saying, "OK, you've soiled your oats with Superhead, now quit playing, it's time to come home!" According to his source, the divorce is never gonna happen. Hey, as others pray for their divorce, I want them to stay together - word to Bobby Kristina!

    ILLSEED TO MARQUES HOUSTON...

WTF IS GOING ON IN YOUR HEAD? Taking pictures of yourself on the toilet with shades on? I have no other comments, but I implore you to caption this picture that was sent to me.

    THE SOURCE'S NEW BEEF

The New Source magazine has a new beef. Do you remember Donny Goines? He won a contest during AllHipHop Week and took home a cool $5,000. Well, we all wished him well, and he even wrote a hot rap about AHH. At the time, we were informed by the crew that they were going to be featured in the Unsigned Hype section, a place that has broken rappers like Biggie and Common. Well, here is what Donny has to say now.

"For those who don't know, I was supposed to have a Unsigned Hype article in the Source magazine based on a online contest I participated in a few months back. I was judged and announced the winner and was told I would be in this issue that is coming out. But instead, they gave me a stupid f****n ad. As you all know, I hustled my a** off for that spot. With your help, I actually achieved my goal and was very proud of myself, only to be insulted by not receiving the article. I won't get into specifics but let's just say the Source magazine is on some bulls**t so I responded the only way I know how. Through the music."

Goines now has a diss song going at the magazine. Check it out here.

    DIDDY ALBUM INFO...

So, the word on the street is the new Diddy album is pretty gosh darn good. Some people that I know relayed this to me and they don't work for Bad Boy. Now, there is a song on there with Nas, Cee-Lo and its produced by Kanye West that I heard is so crack you couldn't put a fiend anywhere near it. There is some charming comments about Kim Porter too. Diddy says in a song, “You stuck with me through all that J-Lo stuff.” Yep, now this album has been promoted as a danceable record so here is Diddy having some fun in the studio. Check it out.

By the way, I think I know what's the deal with Diddy, Kim and the twins. I don't know any really. All I know is Diddy I heard he's going to need a pair of shotguns, you heard?

    CONGRATS TO LALA AND 'MELO

If you didn't already know, LaLa Vazquez and Carmelo Anthony are expecting their first child. The VJ and NBA star made the announcement today via a publicist. That's nice. I wish them well and hope they don't loathe me for some confusion about one of my rumors. I have a friend down South named LaLa that used to give me rumors and I shouted her out. LaLa the VJ, with good reason, thought I was referring to her. It was a mess, but they straightened it out and I clarified. She didn't even try to get me fired!

    ZAB'S WIFE GOES OFF?

Slightly old, but I heard that Zab Judah's wife went off on the boxer after catching him in the VIP of a New York club. What "had happened" according to the New York Daily News is that Super Judah was at club Sol chillin' in the VIP with tennis star and part-time amazon Serena Williams. Well, Meda Judah sees her hubby in VIP, but isn't given access to the exclusive area. At at point she reportedly spazzed her way back there, grabbed Zab and dashed. I reportedly took Zab's place next to Serena. (I'm kidding)

QUICKIES: NOTHING TO DO? START A RUMOR!

Every now and then, we get a slew of bad rumors, generally centering around death. So, here we go! To my knowledge, Teairra Mari and Busta Rhymes' hypeman Spliff Star are both alive.

I think I have to give props to VIBE's new editor-in-chief Danyel Smith. She apparently made Bobby and Whitney fake a divorce while Bobby was on the current issue of the magazine and is now selling more than if Chrissy Aggy was on there! (Just kidding, but props due.)

So, Kanye gets a girl and all the G.O.O.D. guys want to get a babe! Rumor has it Mr. Fonzworth Bentely is now dating actress Faune A. Chambers. She was in a few movies now, but I don't know any more on this right now

I was on the AHH message boards and one poster named Waterproof said that Grand Master Melle Mel is about to come back with a new album. Melle Mel is the original G.O.A.T. don’t sleep!

While sources say Nas will drop in December, the promo for Nas' Hip-Hop is dead has begun and the date is November 7. We'll see!

Ras Kass might have started a rumor about the Game. The West Coast rapper said that Game was now repairing the relationship with his bro Big Fase since there is beef in the air! I don't know about this, but it would be cool to see.

    ILL PICS

I am NOT MAD at Dame Dash for this picture. I think he knows the true meaning of life. Thanks to TMZ.com

    ILL VIDS

So, I come across artists all day, every day. I'm like a bootleg A&R. The difference is that I actually listen to as much stuff as I can, whereas an A&R's likely to ignore you. So, my Canadian homey sent me this video and told me how ill it was. That's what they all say, but this one is actually ill. Check out Classified and his video for "Find Out."

Hey, years and years ago, KRS-One spearheaded the Stop The Violence movement. Gangsters please stay away from YouTube. Its called self-incrimination. Hey, stop the madness - for real.

    YESTERDAY, WE LOVE YOU!

Some super good rumors and some super good crap! Read yesterday's rumors by illseed and consider it a re-run!

They keep us talking, but if we stop talking about them then they should worry!

File Sharing Sites Coming To An End?
    Saturday. 9.23.06 8:38 pm

Friday - September 22, 2006 by Alexis Chase

Six years after the demise of Napster, peer-to-peer networks are still settling with the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

According to CNET, last week P2P network eDonkey announced that they will settle a copywright-infringement lawsuit with the RIAA for $300 million and completely close the site. eDonkey2000 users prompted to update their software were forced to watch the product uninstall after initiating the update and visitors to the website are met with a message displaying visitor IP addresses and warning internet users that they are not anonymous online.

In August it was discovered that Kazaa settled with RIAA for $115 million and though still operational, P2P application Limewire is currently facing a $476 million lawsuit, which is expected to go to court next month.

Since the original Napster fallout many file sharers have drifted toward other sources - like the non-node-connected BitTorrent protocol which allows users to download files from multiple sources at the same time. The legality of many currently existing programs is still being decided, but some corporations are opting to form partnerships with technology providers in order to distribute their products via the internet. In May Warner Bros. opted to partner with BitTorrent, allowing their video content to be distributed online legally. As SOHH previously reported Warner Bros also recently partnered with internet video hosting site YouTube.com.

Technology experts are now speculating that after years of fighting costly lawsuits it's possible that conventional peer-to-peer networks may be coming to an end.

Did Diddy Forget About Boyz N' Da Hood?
    Saturday. 9.23.06 8:43 pm

I was recently thinking, with all this Danity Kane and Diddy music, has Diddy put my nizzle's Boyz N Tha Hood on the backburner? He wouldn't be pulling a vintage Diddy move would he? Can't be...

I know he has to respect Big Gee and the rest's grind. (Big Gee's delivery is somethin' serious, too).

They're slept on as far as skills go. Say what you will but they hold their own with anybody on any track. It's been a year or so, let's get another album out Block, we waitin' for y'all to kill em.

There was also a good article on Cee-Lo Green in The Loafing Creation recently so if all you know is Gnarles Barkley when thinking of Cee-Lo, make sure you read this.

And if you missed the Hip Hop Summit Financial Empowerment weekend this past weekend, you missed out on vital info. Cat's need to pay attention to some of the valuable things that are put out there on the real.

Next week we do have Janet Jackson's album release to look forward to, so that's always good..

SOHH Exclusive: Jibbs, "Nobody Wants Another Jay-Z, They Want Something New"
    Saturday. 9.23.06 8:40 pm

Friday - September 22, 2006 by Janeé Bolden
    Jibbs

St. Louis rapper Jibbs is preparing to release his debut album Jibbs Feat. Jibbs on October 24th. In this SOHH Exclusive he talks about his album, his skills in the boxing ring and the controversy over his single, "Chain Hang Low."

"I really expect to surprise people," Jibbs told SOHH. "The album is totally different from the single. It'll shock a lot of people. I got a song called "King Kong" with Chamillionaire about the speakers in my trunk, 'Smile' features Fabo [D4L], I'm talking about the girls posing with it, being fly, 'Big Big Kids' is me telling everyone how I'm the young Jay or Puffy or Nelly now, but doing my own thing. I'm the youngest in the game but I'm flashy. "Hood" is telling my real life story, where I'm coming from."

With his youthful first single and melodic hook, Jibbs has attracted comparisons to other St. Louis artists like Chingy and Nelly.

"My album has St. Louis slang and they have the same slang and a similar vibe but I'm not the same at all. I think my style is very versatile, I'm constantly changing up. I'm coming from the Southside of St. Louis, one of the worst parts of St. Louis. It's the craziest. All my homeboys go through it. Little kids see a lot of stuff at any given time - problems with their Mom, shootouts, they can be in the middle of gunfights. I'm from the heart of the hood," Jibbs told SOHH.

Jibbs, who turns sixteen in November, got his inspiration to rap growing up listening to Biggie, Jay-Z, Lil' Wayne and Nelly and aspires to be one of rap music's all time greats.

"I don't like kiddie music, my song is not bubblegum. You would think it was when you hear the hook but it changes to a real hip hop song. My music adapts to everyone not just kids or grownups. I would hope they wouldn't put it in a category like that. By the time I end my career I want to be one of the greatest. I feel like everybody is just doing the same thing right now and I'm trying to do something totally different. People think they can be just like Jay-Z but nobody wants another Jay-Z, they want something new."

The New York Times recently published an article revealing that "Chain Hang Low" samples a popular minstrel song, however Jibbs admitted to SOHH that he was unaware of the track's roots.

"No, I didn't know that. I don't have any regrets though. I love the song, nobody can pick the hook for me it's my song. I'm happy with what I did. The song was done awhile ago. My brother (DJ Beats of Da Beatstaz) was producing around the city for local artists and I always loved that beat. I went to him about remaking it and I came with it," Jibbs told SOHH.

In addition to his rap skills Jibbs is also holding down two Golden Glove boxing titles.

"I was boxing before I was rapping," Jibbs recalled. "My dad was a boxer awhile ago. He took all my brothers to the gym by the time we were 4-years-old. I came up watching them and by the time I was 8 I was fighting in the ring. That was the same year I started rapping actually."

While he says he prefers rapping over boxing, Jibbs says if artists want to start beef he's happy to put his gloves back on.

"It ain't nothing to me. I'd rather get in the ring then."

Jibbs Feat. Jibbs includes production from David Banner, Maestro, Polow Da Don and Da Beatstaz. Fabo of D4L, Chamillionaire and Pussycat Dolls member Melody make featured appearances on the album, while Yung Joc, Lil' Wayne, Lil Mont and Rich Boy join Jibbs on the "Chain Hang Low Remix."

Jibbs Feat. Jibbs is in stores October 24th.
