Americans Load Up on Empty Calories

HEALTH NEWS BYTE
Tuesday, January 30, 2007

According to a new study, the calories you suck down through a straw may play a bigger role in weight gain than the calories you bite off the end of a fork. Published as part of the national report "What America Drinks," the study's findings indicate that "liquid calories" make up 22% of the average U.S. adult's diet. A signification portion of those calories come in the form of refined sugar from sweetened fruit juices and sodas, which have been shown to contribute to the risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes. For those looking to curb their calorie intake in the new year, researchers recommended a simple fix: a cold, refreshing glass of water.

What This Means for You
For those who can't do without a little sweetness in their cup, many beverage makers are capitalizing on health concerns by offering sugar-free, zero-calorie or all-natural alternatives to sugary drinks. For those with simpler palates, there's also sparkling mineral water.

THEREFORE, SLIM FAST IS ACTUALLY SLIM SLOW!!

Is it the FLU or is it my diet??
Sunday. 3.4.07 11:31 am
Lately I have been trying to lose weight. I have been exercising and going to the gym. I have been hitting the weights and treadmill. I read the calories I am burning and so forth but on the scale my weight is NOT changing. I dont get it. I am lifting too. I have not checked my measurements to see if I am losing inches along with maintaining the same weight.

I dont eat that much but when I do I have been taking this thing called "lean cort". I had a big mac and I know it has a lot of calories in it so I took the lean cort with it. I thought I got food poisoning because I had the runs that night and the next morning. I dont know if I really had food poisoning or if that is how the lean cort is suppose to work. Once my stomach calmed down I had a breakfast sandwhich. I mean you could only imagine how hungry I was. I took another lean cort with that sandwich. No diarea but I feel like I want to throw up and cramps in my stomach and so forth.

I dont know if I have the stomach flu or if it is the lean cort. Anyone have any suggestions????

I just cant seem to lose weight
Sunday. 3.18.07 12:15 pm
Since I have been sick I have not been eating. That is fine since this "porker" needed to lose weight anyway. It isn't even a diet because I am just not hungry. I cannot breathe therefore I cannot smell or taste what I am eating. I feel hungry and my stomach growls but I just have no interest in food.

I basically eat only once a day. You would think that I lost about 10 pounds by now but I haven't!! I don't get it. After 10 days of eating only one meal a day I have only lost 5 pounds. Yeah, that's it. What is it going to take for me to fricken lose weight??

Be careful what you wish for
Monday. 3.19.07 1:43 pm
I know that I want to lose weight but I would not do surgery. There are so many nightmares with surgery. I was just talking with a co-worker of mine and we both agree that any type of weight loss wether surgery or calorie counting, your health should be monitored.

I stumbled accross this article on the web. (click here) It talks about a doctor and his wife conducting liposuction surgeries in their condominimum basement. Neither one of them are licensed to practice in this country. They are from Brazil and the people they have operated on died! One of them was only 24yrs old. Why would you do that at such a young age and then to go to someones house to do it! Forget it!

As much as I want to lose weight I dont want to DIE trying!

7 bad habits of overweight people

My weight keeps going up and down like a yoyo and it is so frustrating. For my height I am considered overweight by... too many pounds to mention. I work out at 24 hr. fitness and these are some of the bad habits of overweight people:

1. They don't exercise regularly.

Dylan Gautreaux, fitness manager for 24 Hour Fitness in Carrollton, Texas, recommends two to three cardio sessions per week of 20 to 45 minutes and two to three resistance training sessions per week of 30 to 45 minutes. He says resistance training will build muscle that helps burn fat.

2. They eat most of their meals out.

"Restaurant portions are enormous and most of us were brought up to belong to the clean plate club," says LouAnn Frisch, a dietitian in Portland, Oregon. She says that Mexican and Chinese restaurants probably have the highest calorie meals, but if you must eat out: "Thai and Vietnamese foods are better. Pho soups and won-ton soups are great choices." [Pho, pronounced "fa," is a Vietnamese soup that's usually made with beef.]

3. They always eat a second portion.

"It really does take 20 minutes for your brain to catch up with your stomach. But most people consume high amounts of food in 20 minutes," says Frisch. She acknowledges that it's difficult to slow down, but suggests putting less food on your plate and skipping seconds.

4. They avoid even light activity.

"There are little things that you can do to lead a more active lifestyle," says Gautreaux. "Take breaks and get some fresh air instead of sitting at your desk all day. There are even stability balls made to sit behind a desk instead of a chair. These cause you to sit up straight, hold your back up and burn more calories."

5. They never turn down sweets.

Frisch doesn't recommend cutting out sweets completely, just cutting down on them: "If you need chocolate, have some. Not a lot, just some. But savor it and be happy with a small portion."

6. They eat even when they're not hungry.

"Eating is a physiologically and psychologically satisfying, mood-altering experience. Most people eat, not because they are hungry, but for other reasons," says Frisch. Learn what triggers you to eat and healthier ways to reward yourself or brighten your mood.

7. They skip meals.

Researchers from the University of Massachusetts Medical School found that skipping meals can play a role in obesity. Eating fewer, larger meals may cause insulin to spike, which triggers hunger and could cause more blood sugar to be stored as fat. The study found that people who eat several, smaller meals were less likely to be obese. Overweight people may find it difficult initially to overcome their bad habits, but the results of better eating and exercise habits are very rewarding.

Well I know that I am guilty of numbers 2, 5 and 7. Eating out and skipping meals I can work on.... but take away my chocolate and the world will be sorry. ha ha ha...
