photographer Edward Burtynsky makes a wish: that his images -- stunning landscapes that document humanity's impact on the world -- help persuade millions to join a global conversation on sustainability. Burtynsky presents a riveting slideshow of his photographs, which show vividly how industrial development is altering the Earth's natural landscape. From mountains of tires to rivers of bright orange waste from a nickel mine, his images are simultaneously beautiful and horrifying.

Chain stores vs the independent
Saturday. 6.23.07 7:53 pm
I suppose one great benefit in having many small independent specialty and convenience stores is that the money always stays in the city/country. As development progresses and cities expand making room for bigger retail department stores and chain stores more land is required so the independent business owner is evicted or goes bankrupt because the larger shops take the business away. With these large department stores and chain stores profits are not always staying in the city/country, it leaves going to support some rich millionaire in another country.
