Hokkien Funeral (Taoism - a dying culture)
Thursday. 10.28.10 1:54 am
Dear Diary,

It gonna be super long post but it for memories purpose for my future children..~

My beloved grand father pass away on the Friday 22 October 2010 (九月十五).
It was a mixture of feelings, from sadness to anger, since we were not allowed to cry out loud (to makesure that his soul is rest in peace)

I was so sad when I received the news from my mum, and I cried a little during work, and a customer walked in. That day itself, I went back home early, and had a long cry, and told myself not to cry the next day. Which indeed I did it, but not during the funeral day itself.

Chinese Funeral, often consists of 3 days, 5 days or 7 days, depends on the house owner or the will of the dead.

My grandpa's was a 5 days memorial, which each day consists of different activities. The first day they discovered he pass away, a lot of people were to contact, from relative to people who handle the funeral.

It is very important to respect a Chinese's funeral, to the dead and also the family, so those visitors must wear light colour while attending paying a visit. Especially no RED or PINK during that period of time. (I saw some insensitive old lady wearing FRESH RED, it really a very unpleasant act!)

All the daughters and son + grandchildren have to dress in white and black pants, and at the left shoulder we have to pin something to show our "status". Those who followed grandpa's surname (Son, daughter in law, daughter) will have to click on "har" - i really dont know what is that in english, and (Son's children have to click on Har with dark blue cloth) while (Daughter's children have to click on Dark blue and Yellow Cloth) Relatives are Dark Green, and sisters to my grand father is Dark Red.

According to my mum, they will have to feed my grandpa rice, before placing him into the coffin. They will dress my grandpa and everything. My grandpa was dress in a suit of coat, He is such a Handsome guy, we always argue that we are not pure Chinese, maybe part of Mongolian which contributed to his wonderful face features.

Anyway, since the 1st day I'm not there and not sure of what's going on, but I see alot of "gold and Silver" and "Buddha Hand" - All in papers were place inside the coffin together with my grandpa. His coffin is a very modern western coffin, with a see through glass.

According to mum, they hired monk to pray for the 1st 2 nights (only a very short period of time involved)

2nd day, I was there, we reach there quite late, 1920 (I was driving and speeding! but cannot manage to reach at 1900 sharp when the praying by the monk start) So we missed out the prayer.

Upon reaching, I went to burn an incense for my grandpa, telling him I'm here. Whole day it was purely eat and gathering because nothing much to do besides helping them to fold the "gold and silver paper" for the whole night.

Alot of relative were there, everyone is paying their respect to my grandpa, and it became a family gathering, no one was crying on the 2nd night, instead a lot of laughter.

On the 3rd day we reach early because a lot of ceremony involved, where we refer it as "Going to class" because the "Sai Kong - a Taoist" will start ringing the bell, and all the daughters and sons, grandchildren must gather at the front of Sai Kong, and start listening to the prayer. This circles repeated many times. We have to sit there with an incense and do what we were told to do.

We have to walk and make a circle at the coffin for many times until 11pm (on and off).

But around 2100, my uncle invited a group of people from Buddhist society to give a Buddhist Prayer, we have to read the prayer from the books (A lot of Mandarin Character that I never seen before) It was the longest process, and the prayer was very nice.

On the 4th night (Last night) We have to be there very early before 1800, because the prayer by Sai Kong will start sharp at 1800 or it will be bad if it was late. The prayer was longer compared to the 3rd night, because we have to pray at the "house" and also the dead ancestors.

The process repeated until before 0000. During the process, we still have to make a circle at the coffin. The most interesting part is "crossing the bridge".

Each of the daughters and sons + grandchildren were given 14 coins to be used for "crossing the bridge" , the make a small bridge at the compound and we were required to move up the bridge and said "Ah Chor, Ah Kong, Kuay Keo" (Ancestor and Grandpa, cross the bridge) while doing so , we have to throw 2 coins into the bowl provided. The process repeated for 7 times.

B4 the clock strike 0000, we bring everything we wanted to burn for grandpa (paper house, paper money, paper gold, and everything) to an empty land, we have to make into a circle and once it was in fire we have to call "Ah Kong Zip Chu" (grandpa go in the house), and later we have to move back home without turning back. (go into the house from behind, and wash our face and hand)

5th day morning, is the worse morning ever, because was the day we have to bury our grandpa. I keep walking near the coffin for the past 4 days to look at my grandpa, because we were pretty close. We reach there in the morning right before any prayers.

We were told to see our grandpa for the very last time before they close the coffin, yes by that time, majorities of us were having tears at the tip of our eyes. 4 nails were knocked into the coffin to show "closure", while doing so, the Sai Kong will said something good and we have to answer "HO" - Good. and later we have to circle the coffin, again, and yes I started crying silently.

Later, we were not allow to go into the house anymore until we were to return home from the bury ground. We have to sit infront of the table full of offerings from the sons, daughters and relative and friends. we have to pray and bow our head for 12times.

Later we were divided into male and female, while the Sai Kong called other relative to offer their last praying. 1st with "Son in Law" then relative, friends and etc.

We did some donation to the societies too, I think is my grandpa's will.

Later the coffin was move into the van, and we have to follow the van in walking until a certain distant before we took bus to the bury ground.

The arrangement was "Son In Law, Grandson in law in front of the coffin with black umbrellas" , "coffin" "4 sons" "4 Daughters + Daughter In Law" and followed by Grandchildren and relatives.

It was a funny moment when we were required to say "Ah Kong Kuay Keo" whenever we cross the bridge to the bury ground.

We reach the bury ground, and my uncles (4sons) have to pray at the front to I think sort of inform the "God" there that my grandpa was going to stay here now.

We have to take away the pint cloth and give it to Sai Kong at the bury ground, when moving in the coffin, we were not allow to look at it, until everything is nicely place into the ground.

One last prayer, and coffin circling. Then we were asked to grab some soil to throw into the ground and said "Ah Kong Tui Chu" (Grandpa go back home). We were asked to wash our hands and face with flower's water (mix flower into water).

Get in the bus, we have our journey home (My big uncle carrying the "Hiao Lo" (a place to put in incense for grandpa) we were required to say "Ah Kong Kuay Keo" when crossing the bridge again.

Once we reach home, we have to wash our hands and face with Flower's water again and go into the house by saying "Ah Kong Zip Chu" and pray for and get a red string. Red String means you can wear red now, those who do not get the red string "like my aunt and uncle" will do so on the 7th day. (today!)

According to Chinese belief, on the 7th day , the soul will come back to pay a visit for the last time, before they were told to drink a cup of tea that will used to wash away all the memories of the present life.
