does quitting make me a loser?
Monday. 10.1.07 12:13 pm
Quite a number of people have been asking me recently why I decided to quit my job... I thought i should document it down so that when I look back 5 years down the road (no matter how it turns out), i will be able to recall why i did it in the first place.

It's a case of security vs. freedom. My job is a very stable one (iron bowl as what the chinese would put it) where the chances of being sacked or being demoted is almost impossible if you go by the rules. But with security comes bondage... that's why the jail is also known as the place of maximum security. everything is provided for over there but you have no freedom at all...

people always say that if you quit, you are a loser. I had that thinking in my mind for a long time until I realised recently that quitting is not a loser mentality all the time. In fact, it is actually a smart move if what you are clinching onto leads to an end that is not worthy of the journey. you are no loser if you stop acting cool and quit smoking. you are no loser if you quit selling a product that is already obsolete. you are no loser if you quit learning something that is already outdated. you are no loser if you quit a job that drains you out and does not lead to financial freedom... you are a loser if you don't quit... but of cos, you should never quit if the outcome is transcedent, is worth all the difficulties that you will encounter along the way...

i want to be free to do what i am good at, what I enjoy. I want to do only things that are really necessary and not meaningless paperwork/admin stuff that is time consuming and just in the name of being professional. I want to be free to decide how hard i should work, when and how much time i should work. I want to be free to give the best of my time and energy level to my family. I want to be free financially so that I can focus on my family and helping others without worrying about money. I want Him to guide me through my life so that when i look back, every moment and effort is worth it...

This song struck me these couple of days cos the lyrics kinda echoes how I feel within... it's really time to go... the only reason why i stay on is simply to see you all through the last mile... once it's done, it's time to breakaway... it's time to take the chance and do what I should do... to make a change... to breakaway... the memories will linger on... i will treasure them... the relationships will still remain... but it's time to move on... and grow and try new things... with no regrets when i look back...

Grew up in a small town
And when the rain would fall down
I'd just stare out my window
Dreaming of what could be
And if I'd end up happy
I would pray (I would pray)

Trying hard to reach out
But when I tried to speak out
Felt like no one could hear me
Wanted to belong here
But something felt so wrong here
So I prayed I could break away

[Chorus:]
I'll spread my wings and I'll learn how to fly
I'll do what it takes til' I touch the sky
And I'll make a wish
Take a chance
Make a change
And breakaway
Out of the darkness and into the sun
But I won't forget all the ones that I love
I'll take a risk
Take a chance
Make a change
And breakaway

Wanna feel the warm breeze
Sleep under a palm tree
Feel the rush of the ocean
Get onboard a fast train
Travel on a jet plane, far away (I will)
And breakaway

[Chorus]

Buildings with a hundred floors
Swinging around revolving doors
Maybe I don't know where they'll take me but
Gotta keep moving on, moving on
Fly away, breakaway

I'll spread my wings
And I'll learn how to fly
Though it's not easy to tell you goodbye
I gotta take a risk
Take a chance
Make a change
And breakaway
Out of the darkness and into the sun
But I won't forget the place I come from
I gotta take a risk
Take a chance
Make a change
And breakaway, breakaway, breakaway

losing one for more!
Saturday. 11.24.07 7:57 pm
on 31 Dec 2007, I'm officially jobless...

but right now, before that day is here, I actually have a few jobs already...
If someone is to ask me what I'm doing, I would say I'm
1. an author (publishing a physics handbook soon),
2. an educator (physics, financial matters and life),
3. an investor and consultant in development banking (overseas investment in land development),
4. a referral for a tuition agency (helping parents/students to find suitable tutors),
5. an IT consultant (for educational on-line videos),
6. an investor and consultant in UK properties (in the near future if my link up with my native friend from UK picks up)

I realised that the person who is able to live a fulfilling life is one who purposefully finds out and decide what is worth pursuing for the rest of their lives, not someone who just want to play safe and be part of the norm.

Such people are willing to take the risk of betting their whole life on a certain purpose/goal in life. Even if they fail to achieve it eventually, they have no regrets because they have tried their best.

For me, a purpose and goal worth pursing should be able to transcend time and last for eternity: discovering the gifts that God has created me with and shining for Him in my own special way and in the process become a blessing to others and a joy to my Maker! I'm so glad I decided to go on an adventure with Him and everyday seems to be so unpredictable but yet exciting!

Life is no longer mundane and safe! Life is so refreshing and "dangerous" that I can finally say from the bottom of my heart that I'm enjoying life to its fullest!

Hope you can enjoy life in such a manner too! :)
