Portrayed By - Santiago Cabrera
Superpowers - Precognition (Draws the Future in his Pictures)
Age - 28
Gender - Male
Occupation - Artist, Author

Character history

Isaac Mendez's story began in the first episode, where he was a struggling, tortured artist living in New York City. His girlfriend and art dealer was Simone Deveaux. However, Mendez was addicted to heroin, and had little success quitting permanently, which put a strain on hisrelationship with Simone. This strain is worsened when Isaac realizedhe could see ambiguous future events and paint them when high onheroin. Isaac at first assumed the paintings to be "evil" and tried todestroy them, but Simone saw them as artistically impressive. Near theend of the pilot, Isaac overdosed. Simone brought help in the form of nurse Peter Petrelli, and Isaac survived.

After he recovered, Isaac seemed to have accepted his "destiny" to save New York from a large, nuclear-level, mushroom cloudexplosion he saw in one of his precognitive trances. Isaac had alsocome to believe he needed the heroin to "paint the future", and nolonger cared about quitting. Simone doubted Isaac's powers and wouldnot stand idly by while he ruined his life using heroin, so she lefthim. During their conversation, Simone also mentioned that Isaac's comic book, 9th Wonders!, may be late as he continued with his precognitive painting.

In the fourth episode, Simone came to Isaac requesting new paintings for a showing at her art gallery.Isaac offered earlier works instead, saying that he needed the newerones to tell the future. Simone doubted she could even sell the olderones and was still unconvinced of Isaac's powers. Isaac proclaimed heknew about her kiss with Peter the previous evening. Simone assumedthat Isaac had followed her, but he showsed her his drawing, saying hehad made it seven weeks prior. Isaac then said he needs money for"painting supplies", by which he meant heroin, which he hoped wouldhelp him find a way to stop the nuclear explosion. Simone left andIsaac broke out his "tools" to shoot up. At one point in the episode,he said "I'm gonna be a hero". After shooting up, he experienced avision of Claire Bennet at her school around Homecoming time, being chased and cornered by a shadowy figure.

In the fifth episode, Peter came by to find images of "the cheerleader" that a future version of Hiro Nakamuratold him to save. However, Isaac was distraught over the current stateof his life and felt he'd wasted his time. Peter disagreed andpersuaded Isaac to look past their differences. Peter found the kind ofpainting he was looking for, though Isaac explained he could not finishit, as he was out of both heroin and money to buy more. Peter stillbelieved they should keep trying and, through his ability to mimicother people's powers, managed to paint the picture himself, saying hecould see the finished work in his mind. The phone rings after hefinishes. Issac explains that it's just some Japanese man (in fact it'sHiro) that he can't understand, and Peter realizes that it's Hiro.

In "Better Halves",Isaac and Peter realize they don't know who the cheerleader was orwhere she lived. They noticed that one of Isaac's canvases of thefuture was missing. Isaac realized that Simone had taken it to sellwith his other paintings. He didn't remember what he had painted, because he was high at the time. After Peter left to try to track downthe painting another way, Eden McCain visited Isaac's apartment, claiming to be a fan.

In the following episode, Isaac and Eden were in a paper plant in Odessa, Texas where Mr. Bennetworked. Bennet told Isaac that he helps people with special powers tobetter use them, and suggested that he could teach Isaac to use hispowers without heroin. However, Bennet desperately needed Isaac tofinish a painting of an attack, which he believed would let him protecthis daughter Claire. Isaac tried again to paint without the drugs, butafter that proved unsuccessful, Mr. Bennet had Eden persuade Isaac totake heroin willingly and paint an image.

In "Homecoming",Isaac painted a picture of a man glowing brightly, which Isaac laterdescribes as "a man exploding", rather than anything related to Claire. Then, in "Fallout",he began painting again, though he didn't believe the paintings to beanything more than art since he hadn't taken any drugs since paintingthe previous image. After Eden told him that Claire had been saved, herealized that the future could be changed. Eden gave him a phone and anaccess card, suggesting that he do something. To that end, he calledHiro and arranged a meeting. After meeting Hiro, seeing the futureissue of 9th Wonders!, and realizing that his most recentdrawings were in fact of events from the then-future, he decided toagain paint without heroin. Relaxed and advised by Hiro to concentrate,he successfully activated his powers, drawing a picture of Hirofighting a dinosaur with a sword.

Powers and abilities

Isaac has the power of precognition, which allows him to depictimages of the future while in a trance-like state. While in this state, his pupils and irisesfade into light white color and he becomes unresponsively focused onpainting the images in his mind. Very little context comes to Isaacwhen he sees the future. He can't tell anything about the people orplaces beyond what he sees at that moment. Thus, he is often surprisedto find out weeks later what his work is actually depicting. Also dueto the previous heroin use, Isaac was not able to clearly remembercertain images after he painted them, as he stated in "Better Halves."

Originally, Isaac's powers were triggered by the use of heroin, andhe was unable to use his powers without it. During the episode "Hiros", Peter Petrelli copies Isaac's precognitive ability without the use of heroin. A TV Guide article from early October, 2006, revealed that he would eventually try to find out if his power works without using heroin.[1] In "Seven Minutes to Midnight", Isaac attempted just this, unsuccessfully. He does so successfully in "Fallout", after relaxing and taking advice from Hiro Nakamura to concentrate.

Art work

Made for the show by comic book artist Tim Sale, Isaac's paintings are shown to be accurate predictions of future events. They are, in order of appearance:

Uluru

  • One of Isaac's paintings is the depiction of a man facing some sort of monster surrounded by fire and destruction. The image is named "Uluru" in 9th Wonders' picture gallery.[3]This monster also appears in the online comic, where it asks thepainter, "Isaac, what have you done?" The monster has also been spokenof by D.L Hawkins while discussing the 9th Wonders comic book, also drawn by Mendez. A painting of Uluru is also seen among Isaac's"earlier work" that is rejected by Simone in the fourth episode.Another instance of Uluru appears as a screen saver on Hiro Nakamura'scomputer.
"Genesis"
  • The depiction of a full solar eclipse which happens later in the first episode.[4] Simone stops Isaac from destroying this painting.
  • A hand holding a transparent container (possibly a glass) with a bubbling liquid inside.[5] Isaac destroys this painting. Possibly the hand is that of Theodore Sprague, who is seen in "Seven Minutes to Midnight" boiling a glass of water with his radioactive powers.
  • An unfinished painting of a girl appearing to be in a yellow jacket.
  • The depiction of a burning bus which is confirmed to be a suicide bombing in Israel.[6]
  • The depiction of a fiery train wreck.[7] Claire Bennet saves a man from this incident and Isaac sees the story on the news.
  • A portrait of a man jumping off a building and seemingly flying.[8] This is the painting that encourages Peter Petrelli to do the same thing.
  • A large explosion and the resulting mushroom cloud in Midtown Manhattan.[9] This painting is shown as being done on the concrete floor of Isaac's apartment.
"Don't Look Back"
  • In the second episode, it is shown that the explosion Isaacdepicted is to happen at 11:52 AM EST on November 8 in the story'soriginal timeline.
  • In Hiro's "five weeks into the future time frame" Hiro discovers the comic book 9th Wonders!, which details events of his and Ando's journey. Isaac wrote and illustrated the book.
  • In Hiro's "five weeks into the future time frame", there are a great many paintings of a symbol resembling an RNA helix. This symbol appears in many places throughout the series.
"One Giant Leap"
  • A picture of a girl walking away from a boy in a school hall. A previous scene indicates these are Claire and her classmate Zach, respectively.
  • A couple kissing under a red umbrella. A previous scene implies that the couple is Peter and Simone.
"Collision"
  • Peter standing amidst apparent floating locker doors.[10] This later occurs in the episode "Homecoming", when Peter confronts Sylar and has locker doors hurled at him.
  • Claire in an ampitheater as a shadowed figure approaches her. Comes to pass in "Homecoming".
  • Hiro and Ando standing before a dank cityscape, under a banner with part of the word 'Homecoming'.[11] Comes to pass in "Fallout".
  • A close up of a scared-looking Claire.[12] Comes to pass in "Homecoming".
"Hiros"
  • A shadowy figure[13]standing over the prostrate figure of a cheerleader (presumed to beClaire but it was apparently Jackie), whose head has been severed.(Finished by Peter Petrelli)[14] Comes to pass in "Homecoming".
"Better Halves"
  • Niki Sanders lying on the floor of her home's bedroom. He later wipes off a layer of paint which covered an RNA-shaped tattoo on her back revealing that the painting is actually of Jessica Sanders.[15] Occurs in the previous scene of the episode.
"Seven Minutes to Midnight"
"Homecoming"
  • A picture of Peter in front of Union Wells High School at 8:12 p.m., presumably dead.[17] Occurs at the end of the episode.
  • A picture of a person glowing bright red, later described by Isaac as an "exploding man."[18]
"Fallout"
  • Sketches of Hiro socializing with Charlie before her death.[19]
  • A picture of Hiro brandishing a katana while encountering a Tyrannosaurus.

SYNOPSIS -

The episode opens up with narration by an unseen man. Meanwhile, a different man, Peter Petrelli is seen standing on a building, then falling. Peter then wakes up in the home of Charles Deveaux, a patient under his care.

In Madras, India, university professor Mohinder Suresh, the narrator from before, is speaking to his class. After news of his father's death in New York, Mohinder suspects that his father (Chandra Suresh) was murdered due to his genetics research. He goes to his father's local apartment to look for clues and to finish his research. However, before Mohinder can thoroughly analyze his father's findings, he realizes someone is still in the apartment when that person's phone rings. As the intruder talks on his phone about Mohinder's father and the research, Mohinder narrowly escapes.

In Las Vegas, Nevada, after doing a webcam performance in her garage, Niki Sanders prepares for the day with her young son, Micah, but is forced to leave early when thugs break into their home.

In Odessa, Texas, Claire Bennet's story opens up with her getting her school classmate Zach to videotape her climbing up to an 80-foot (24 m) height and jumping off. Shockingly, Claire then gets up and re-locates her dislocated right shoulder as if it was nothing. More disturbing, she also refers to this instance as "attempt number six" to Zach who has been filming the attempt.

Back in New York, Peter keeps "having these amazing dreams" when he closes his eyes, specifically dreaming he can fly. Turning to his brother Nathan, who had just gotten off a call with Mr. Linderman, Peter talks about his dreams. However, Nathan is a politician running for Congress and is extremely busy. Although he does listen, he disregards Peter's claims that he can fly and wonders why Peter would come to him, anyway. Their conversation is then interrupted when Nathan gets news that their mother, Angela Petrelli, has been arrested for shoplifting.

In Texas, Claire confesses her despair to Zach, who believes "this is the single coolest thing to happen to [their town]" in many years. She disagrees and swears him to secrecy. Though he says she'll still be popular, she claims she's a freak. After describing some of the gruesome ways she's attempted to injure herself as proof, she then asks for the tape and takes it from him, promising to talk to him in school as a reward for helping her.

In Tokyo, Japan, with intense concentration, Hiro Nakamura discovers he has the ability to manipulate time. Examples include successfully causing the subway train to be 14 seconds late and causing his clock to tick back one second. Elated, he runs to tell his coworker, Ando Masahashi, who has a hard time believing Hiro and is more interested in watching Niki Sanders' webcam.

Back in Las Vegas, after Niki visits her son's private school and is given bad news about her son's tuition, she leaves and sees her reflection with an expression different to the one she has. Haunted by what she sees, she yells at the image to leave her alone, much to the confusion of her son.

At the police station, Peter and Nathan talk with their mother. Recently widowed by their father's death, she has been doing odd things such as this for several months. Nathan, more concerned with his campaign than his mother, tells her to "get over it". Peter attempts to be understanding and to talks with his mother while Nathan eventually leaves. As they talk, Peter tells his mother about an almost metaphysical connection he feels he has with his brother, recalling a time in the past where Peter knew Nathan had been hurt before being told. His mother is unconvinced.

Taking her son to a friend's house, Niki talks with the woman about her situation. She explains that the home invaders seen earlier were sent by Mr. Linderman, who appears to be a loan shark with mafia connections (and quite possibly, the same Mr. Linderman that Nathan spoke with on the phone). Niki also tries to tell her friend about this strange "other" she hears and sees, but her friend fails to understand. Frustrated, Niki simply leaves.

Claire, on her way home, sees a devastating fire raging. With little hesitation, she decides to test her powers again by rushing in. She manages to pull a man out of the burning train and is quickly inspected by a firefighter, only to reveal that she has no burns. She runs away before she can be detained.

Now in Brooklyn, New York, Mohinder has taken a job as a taxi driver and rents his father's other old, local apartment. Although it is in disarray, much of the material is still there and Mohinder begins to reorganize it.

Next, we meet Isaac Mendez. Behaving erratically, he begins destroying his paintings. When his girlfriend Simone Deveaux arrives, she attempts to calm him down and reason with him. Isaac then admits to her that although he claimed to have kicked his drug addiction, he was high when he made the paintings. Although distressed, Simone realizes the paintings are "fantastic". Isaac, however, insists that they are evil. When she asks what he's talking about, he shows her a painting he made three weeks ago and that morning's paper. The images are identical, right down to details Isaac couldn't have possibly known beforehand, as the event depicted in the paper happened the day before. Isaac then insists that something is wrong with him and that there's "only one way left". Simone assumes he mean going cold turkey and says he cannot do it alone, but Isaac, not willing to let her stay, yells at her to leave until she finally does. After Simone walks out, Isaac watches a fire -β€” the same one Claire saved a man from -β€” rage and looks at another one of his paintings only to see it depicts an aerial view of the situation perfectly.

At campaign headquarters, Nathan has just managed to sweep his mother's arrest under the rug and wishes she'd just get a hobby. Peter, on the other hand, simply sees it as a cry for attention and a sign of loneliness. Nathan then segues the conversation into offering Peter a job as a coordinator. However, Peter is turned off by Nathan's self-serving intentions and attempt to "do the right thing" by him. He declines, saying he doesn't want his brother's pity and walks out. There in the street, Peter sees Simone hailing a cab, then hails one himself. The driver just happens to be Mohinder and the two begin a conversation. Peter asks Mohinder about "being special". Although Mohinder is surprisingly slow to realize what Peter means, he eventually talks to him about genetics and evolution.

Meanwhile, across the world, people -β€” Peter included -β€” look into the sky at a solar eclipse. Niki, specifically, looks through a device Micah made for just such an occasion. She then realizes the thugs are still there and attempts, but fails, to escape. The thugs then propose she perform for them on camera and then force her to do so. When she objects, an altercation ensues, though the scene cuts off just as it starts.

Back in Japan, Hiro and Ando have left work. Hiro is still going on about his powers and Ando humors a bit, allowing him to explain further. Hiro claims he'll soon be able to teleport by bending the "space", in the space/time continuum. Ando could care less and suggests going to get a drink. At a bar, Hiro offers detailed theories on how he'll do what he says, referencing a comic book (specifically, Uncanny X-Men #143, from the "Days of Future Past" storyline). Ando suggests Hiro teleport into the ladies' room, thinking his friend could learn more there. Hiro, feeling up to the challenge, insists he'll do it. As Ando leaves the table to get another drink, Hiro stares intently at the ladies' room door and poses humorously in concentration.

Some time after we last saw her, Niki awakens to find the garage trashed, with the dead, bloody bodies of the thugs strewn about. Even more shocking, Niki looks into the mirror to see her reflection covered in blood β€”- even though she isn't -β€” and giving a hushing gesture.

In the cab, Peter gets a call from Simone telling him to hurry over to her father's place. Less than a minute after Peter leaves, Mohinder gets another fare. This other man seems ordinary enough at first, talking about himself and heading home after business. However, he begins to ask Mohinder personal questions, referencing his teaching position in India among other things. Getting spooked, Mohinder abandons the cab and runs away. The mysterious man then gets out and is revealed to be the same man who was at Mohinder's father's apartment in India.

Back in Claire's home, over dinner, she confides to her mother that she "walked through fire without getting burned." However, her mother believes that she is being metaphorical, and thus dismisses her comments.

Back in Japan, Hiro successfully teleports into the women's bathroom, forcing him to be ejected from the bar. After a thorough chiding from Ando, Hiro indicates a need to be different from everyone else, to which Ando responds, "We are not special! We are Japanese!" After apparently failing to convince Ando, Hiro walks away, leaving his friend there.

In Simone's father's place, Peter attempts to explain his situation to Simone, but she repeatedly brushes him off to find morphine, not telling him who it really is for.

As Claire washes the dishes after dinner, her mother tries to plan a day together. While taking off her ring, Claire drops it into the still-running garbage disposal. She reaches in before turning it off, and mangles her hand in the process. After retrieving the ring, she hides her hand from her mother as it heals. She requests that her mother tells her who her real parents are. Her father finally arrives home -- and is revealed to be the mysterious man in Mohinder's cab.

Back in Japan, a slightly-dejected Hiro rides the subway and sees a poster advertising a trip to New York. After intense concentration, the clock above him begins to speed up rapidly. He suddenly arrives in the middle of New York's Times Square. Raising his arms triumphantly, he exclaims, "Hello New York!"

As Simone and Peter arrive at Isaac's apartment, Simone is explaining Isaac's ability to tell the future with his paintings. Simone finds Isaac lying on the ground, apparently overdosed on heroin. She frantically calls 911 while Peter discovers a painting that depicts him flying off of a building. It is also revealed that Isaac painted a large floor mural depicting the city being destroyed in a nuclear explosion. Isaac's only words are, "We have to stop it."

Later standing atop a building, Peter waits for his brother to arrive. Upon Nathan's arrival, Peter talks about his destiny, indicating his need to "be somebody." He steps off and falls from the building, but is saved at the last second, by Nathan, who is actually the one with the ability to fly. As they struggle, Nathan loses his grip and Peter falls again.
