The Big Show As ECW Champ And Funny Pic
Thursday. 9.14.06 8:56 am
At first I didn’t like the idea of Big Show being ECW Champion. I knew that the belt had to come off of RVD because of his recent problems, but I could have picked a better person than The Big Show. You had Kurt Angle (though not anymore), plus former champs like The Sandman, Tommy Dreamer and Justin Credible. For Gawd’s sake bring back Terry Funk and put the title on him. Anyone, just not The Big Show.

I’ve not been too high on The Big Show the past few years. When he first came to WCW as The Giant he got a huge push. He won the WCW Championship his first match. Even after he lost it, he was still a major player. Then he came to the WWE.

That’s when it went downhill. It was like they suddenly forget how to push big men. This was the company known for creating giants and they didn’t know what to do with him. I’ve seen him job (lose) to everyone over the years. You name it, this 7 Foot 500 Pound man put them over. This is the main reason I didn’t like the Big Show as Champion.

It seems to me that Paul Heyman is a big fan of The Big Show. They had a nice run together on Smackdown and it seemed like a good idea to bring Show to ECW when the brand was (re)launched earlier this Summer. I liked what they were doing with him when Show would come out and throw Tommy Dreamer around like a rag doll and Dreamer would ask for more. I thought he could go somewhere with this gimmick and it was nice not seeing a 7 Foot Tall man lie flat on his back and losing. But it takes time to build a championship push. Maybe later on, but not now. Then RVD got in trouble and ECW needed a new champion quickly.

So a storyline emerges. Turn Heyman heel. Give Big Show the title. Heyman is similar to the Mr. McMahon character on the late 90’s. He pushes for the new ECW and is against the old ECW and it’s originals. Big Show gets put over more by the fact he’s the first man to hold the WCW, WWE and ECW Championships.

I'll admit, I didn’t like it at first. In fact I hated it. But after a month or so of watching it I’ve gotten used to it. I can see Big Show as champion. I enjoy the fact that after all these years that the WWE has finally found a use for the big man. He’s not just some top superstars whipping boy.

Of course there are a few things I don’t like about The Big Show’s current direction. I think Terry Taylor said it best. He said if he was booking a superstar the size of The Big Show any move he does would be his finisher. Show puts a guy in a headlock, Show is so big and so powerful the guy submits first thing. Then find a guy like Jim Carey that can pop his arm out of joint, Show puts this guy in an arm bar and it looks like Show ripped the poor guys arm off. That’s how I would get him over. Instead the booker of the new ECW want The Show to cheat to beat guys that are smaller than him. They want Show to have matches that are not under Extreme Rules, that way he can win or lose by disqualification and still keep the title. I never have liked this.

Anyway, to close out, I’m starting to like Big Show as champion. I hope he holds on to the title for a while. At least until the WWE gets smarts and brings ECW Original Chris Benoit back to ECW to defeat The Big Show.

Thanks for reading.

i haven't watched wrestling for ages.

though, i DID get a sneaking suspicion when my algebra teacher told me drop my pants... but my policy is strictly "drop pants first, ask questions later."

cheers,
