Inquiring Minds Want To Know
Friday. 9.3.04 9:20 am
Well seeing have I haven't written anything regarding school yet I figure I ought to. Maybe inquiring minds want to know what's been going on. .. Then again maybe they don't, but if you don't please don't tell me so I can pretend that people actually want to hear about what's going on. ``

Today marks the first week of classes over. Well actually the first 3 days since our classes began on Wednesday. But thus far I have had all my classes so I can tell you about all my teachers!!! Yay! You ready? Ok, let's go.

Digital Logic Design:
This class is basically the intro course to hardware and electrical engineering. I really like it. The teacher is cool and I really am interested in the subject matter so that makes it even better. Its all about AND, OR, NOT gates and the like. Not much to say except cool stuff, ignoring the fact it starts at 9:00 in the morning...

Macroeconomics
Taken because I have to. I have to have at least one "humanities" course. Apparently UVA is into the whole "well rounded education" thing. So I've got to take one. Since I took microeconomics last semester I might as well take this one next as its the next in the sequence and before I forget everything I learned last semester. The teacher is cool, a grad student from Turkey. Cool accent. It looks like an interesting class. I would say fun.. but no. Economics by definition can not be fun, only slightly interesting at best.

Discrete Math
Not a math course as much as a thinking and logic course. The professor seems nice, and the subject matter doesn't seem too hard. But I can tell. This is going to be one of those classes that tricks you into a false sense of security before sinking you. One that the guy is testing you to see if you take it seriously or not. Its just a feeling I get from it. This is my class to be scared of.

Ordinary Differential Equations
This one's got a story behind it. See I *did* have my schedule set. All classes good, times were.. meh, ok. But on the first day I went to DiffEQ and the teacher's name was Xiangjin Xu. Very very very strong accent. I could barely understand anything he was saying. For 5 minutes he talked about "moose un oils"... What?! Turns out he was saying "mice and owls".. who knew?? Oh, and at the beginning of class another teacher came in and said "could I borrow one of your chairs for my classroom?" Without pausing Prof. Xu turned around, picked up a piece of chalk and handed it to him saying "if you need any more just ask." ...... I mean really. So I switched out of his class into another. Had to get course-actioned into the class since it was already full, but the other guy was nice enough to sign the form so I'm in his course now. I like him a whole lot. Much better. Some part of my course-actioning to take a class called Ordinary Differential Equations is amusing and slightly sad...

Intro to Circuit Analysis
This class will be something. The guy teaching is excentric and wacky and crazy. No tests, no quizzes, no final exam. Though homeworks count 80%. And he already warned us that later in the semester they will take upwards of 12+ hours to complete each one. So a trade-off I guess. The other 20% is class participation. So I even answered a question the first day.. of the 120 person class. I felt kind of proud of myself for speaking up in front of that many people, but anyway. So I'm trying to get on his good side for those 20% and help with the homeworks later down the road. I went to his office hours today to say hi and ask a question on the first homework. (I already knew the answer to the question, but I wanted an excuse to be there.) So I think now he at least familiar with me. Funny thing is that later I went to www.ratemyprofessors.com (use it if you haven't yet!!) and look up his name. Under one comment it read "DO NOT under any circumstances let this man learn your name. He will call on you and pick on you throughout every class period for the rest of the year!!" Well now.. lol. Hopefully him learning my name isn't a bad thing. What is a bad thing though is the fact that the lab for this class falls on Friday afternoons from 2-4. Uggghhhh. The bright side is that its only every other week, but still. Uggghhhh.

So there are my classes. Aside from class I'm doing the computer assistant thing again. More of a managerial position this year. Also I'm hoping to join the badminton club. That sounds like fun. I signed up for a newsletter from them, but nothing back form them yet.. I did get stuff back from the fencing club (which I also signed up for) but they have practice for 2 hours three times a week and you have to pay $40 a semester just to be a member. A little much for me time wise and money wise right now especially considering I don't even know if I'll like it. Maybe next semester or next year, who knows.

My new found cool thing is iTunes. Not because I can buy music but because I can listen to the music libraries of everyone else in the dorm network that has iTunes up and is sharing their library. So I have like 20 people's entire mp3 collections that I can listen to at will. Cool stuff. Try it and see if it doesn't work. Free download and everything.

Hmm.. what else....
I changed my printer cartridge the other day....
Oh, and I'm reading a book. W00t!

Later.

Oooh, Fencing
If you end up trying that, I know someone who might be in it. Not sure though. I'd have to ask her.
