Mother's Day Friday. 5.7.10 1:28 am Anyone looking for a different kind of Mother's Day gift should take a look at Microplace. I got my mom a gift certificate from them she can use to enable a microloan to an entrepreneur in Haiti who is trying to expand her business and improve her life. They'll also send her a bracelet made by an artisan in India as a bonus. It is exciting to find a way to help alleviate poverty by helping people help themselves. Enabling people to participate in capitalism gives them a way to have a better life through their own efforts. I've even made a microloan myself to an organization that works with the working poor right here in the U.S. This is something everyone should consider trying. 3 Comments. i heard about this while watching hulu some months back, but it was through a different company. it's a really cool concept. » thaitanic on 2010-05-07 08:41:06 Eh, maybe it's a great idea for your mom but most of the moms I know are pretty broke and on the one day about them they deserve something for/about them. I know as much as I sacrifice for my family I'd be dissapointed if they sacrificed the one day it's ok to have something frivilous or unnessacary for myself to give something to someone else that I have no clue how much it actually even helps. Just saying. » lyndeep on 2010-05-07 09:14:47 The one on Hulu is Kiva. They're both good ways to end poverty through capitalism. If I was nearby, there would be frivolity (i.e., flowers, breakfast in bed). As it is, she'll have to settle for a meaningful gift, a handmade bracelet, and a phone call. » fakebil on 2010-05-07 10:03:58
