NYSSMA stands for New York State School Music Association. What we do is play an instrument or sing in front of a judge. I'm not sure if they do this up north around Buffalo or that huge area, but I know in Long Island we do this. We basically do scales, play a piece, and sightreading. Sightreading is playing a couple of lines from a random piece that you've never seen or played before. Sightreading levels depend like the earlier levels geet quarter notes and half notes and won't get something in 6/8 time. NYSSMA has different levels which range from 1-6(I think I forgot). From levels 1-4 they grade you from 1-28; in levels 5 and 6 (Or whatever the number goes up to) they grade you out of 100 and are obviously more strict. I'm aiming from a 90 to above since this is my first time in level 5 for piano. For viola I'm doing level 3 since I don't have a teacher. What I hate is when my fingers move by themselves and I mess up so I'm praying that it doesn't happen during NYSSMA. I hvae to do level 3 because the orchestra is going to London to perform there and the board allowed us to go but we had to get a good grade in NYSSMA (the rating has to be good,outstanding,excellent i think those are the marks..i have a bad memory) and they made the lowest level 3 so it would be safer for me than a level 4. Oh, I got a 100 on my quiz...it was easy...some enriched class
