Malaysian palm oil struggles to promote 'green' image

KOTA KINABALU, Malaysia (AFP) � Malaysia is promoting its controversial palm oil industry as a model of eco-friendliness, but activists warn forests are still being destroyed to make way for vast plantations.
As palm oil prices boom, Malaysia has mounted a campaign to counter allegations that the crop is responsible for habitat destruction, air pollution from slash-and-burn farming, and pushing orangutans towards extinction.
It insists palm oil is only grown on legal agricultural land and that criticisms are an attempt by competitors in Europe and the United States to undermine growing demand for the commodity.

u see. the palm oil business people have already questioned the general people out here about what we want. we demanded for cleaner fuel, so they come to the solution of biofuel. when they come to biofuel, people still complain that it's not clean enough... and the debacle still goes on.
but basically malaysian palm oil business people had a rountable meeting with pak lah bout coming up with a certificate to indicate that malaysia's palm oil is environmental friendly where virgin forest is not used to harvest. let's see how this roundtable goes. but it's a good initiative to start off.
and if u really want to blame.. try blaming malaysia for being the one that creates biofuel from palm oil if i'm not mistaken that is.
