belated update
Thursday. 6.2.11 12:17 am
I just realized that I never updated on how my first day of training went.

It was so much fun! It is work, but it's fun work. I mean, yeah, there's a lot of poop. I mean a lot of it. Animals don't care where they do their business. But I'm so excited to be working with the animals.

The training was slightly different than what I was supposed to get because the actual trainer called off for the night so I ended up working with a senior volunteer. I got to follow her around and help out with work that I won't be doing on my own until I've been there for a while. So technically I did stuff that I wasn't supposed to since I haven't been there long enough. No one made any complaints, though. I would like to think they were happy for the extra pair of hands. Especially when it came to feeding/cleaning the baby raccoons. They're rambunctious little critters. And the older ones are loud. And messy. But still so cute.

So I learned how to handle a baby raccoon. I also learned how to catch a bird and hold it so that it could be given it's food/medication. The method is different depending on whether the bird is big or small. Something like a robin or sparrow can be caught and held with one hand. The larger birds, like a duck or a pigeon have to be held with two hands.

I didn't get to interact with any of the larger animals {ie, the black bears or the barn owls.} That is definitely something that requires lengthy training.

My first official day will be this coming Sunday. The shift I trained on will be my "permanent" shift.

I skipped out on my school orientation/registration today. After having only gotten two hours of sleep last night and working this morning, I was just too tired. I understand that I'll have to deal with a lower amount of sleep than I've been getting, but I can make a private appointment with a counselor and register that way. I've already got the paperwork that's required to bring to the meeting. I just have to call in the morning and schedule something hopefully for Friday morning before work. It's easier to get up early and do stuff before work than it is to change your whole schedule around. I already know what class I'm going to sign up for so hopefully it won't take too long.

Jacob is so sweet! He's also really awesome. First, the awesome part. He retook his placement test today hoping to score in to a higher math class. His goal was to score in the low range for 141. He ended up testing in the high range of 142! I'm so proud of him. Now the sweet part. He sent me a couple texts with coordinates/equations to graph on his graphing calculator and told me to graph them at the same time. Once I put in the coordinates and hit graph, it came up as a tiny, little heart. It was so sweet.

Anywho, I just wanted to talk about my Wildlife training. And figured I'd add in a couple extra things. Things are going well for the most part. I have absolutely no money right now so food isn't exactly an option right now, but hey, payday is Friday so after bills I might have enough left over for ramen noodles.

Until next time NuTang ...

Why do you have to give medication to sparrows? :S

And the foot binding wasn't something the women really did by choice... when they were born, baby girls' feet were broken and bound because the adults thought it would look good. Sort of similar to how some people pierce the ears of their babies, except much more mutilating/painful.
