Speakers
Thursday. 10.19.06 12:55 am
Well, I thought the speakers brought up very intersting points. I really think that they were right on with people not being able to run a democracy without having an education. I think that if teachers don't start getting paid more, and we start getting more education, then our country is going to really go downhill. The more we put money into sports programs and other things, the more it is just taking away from the money that could be used for helping schools get new text books, or getting more supplies for a lab.

NOTES
Speaker1: Education is going to make economies have more power.
Education needs to be the core value instead of sports and entertainment.
As you get more complex organisms, you get more complex genetic codes, and then culture takes place of the genetic code in society like ours.
America focuses on rights and not responsability, which is not good because people need to realize their responsability. We are just focused on individualism.
Education leads to democracy
America nees to put education first or else within the next few decades, we will slide and other countries will come into power and we will not be number one anymore.

I definetly agree with just about all this speaker said. I think that our minds in America are not where they should be, sports dominate and we are in a rut. There is no way we can just make education number one when all the money is going towards building sports stadiums and making more TV chanels. That is what the public wants, and the market is good for that stuff, so the government is making lots of money. But for education to become number one, the focus needs to be taken off of all the sports and put back on schools.

Speaker2: "Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others."
Lots of people have been shut out of our system, so it isn't truly a democracy
We have a democratic like gov
We have to have educated people to have a democracy
Our government is basically a republic with democratic elements.
Democracy is about how we treat each other, and self education
School and education are different.
School-->Government requires it
Public/Private/Home
Prepares people for a profession
We need to learn how to distinguish between useful and not useful information.
If you can analyze issues, you can be a better part of democracy.

I also agree with this speaker, people need to be educated and have further knowledge than just what is in the text book. That is really why I came to PSEC. I was tired of just learning what is in the textbook, I want to apply those things to real life and see how they are affecting me. I know I used to always go, I am never going to use this in my life, but by coming to PSEC I am starting to realize the things we learn are taught to us for a reason and we will need to use the skills at some point.

Speaker3: Education needs to meet the needs of the students
Create multiple perspectives and learn to be critical thinkers.
School is set up to maintain the status quo
Education is freedom
System is not set up to include everyone
Analogy: Education is like a bank- teacher deposits knowledge into the students
Education should be a 2 way process, where there is facilitating
Not many people in our country are critical, and thats what democracy needs.

The main thing I thought was a good point made by this speaker was that education needs to be a 2 way process. I think that if a teacher just explains something to you, you will not really grasp the concept. But if you have to do homework on it, it makes it so you have applied it to something. Taking it to the next level though is very good because then you can maybe teach it to someone else, because that just proves that you understand what you are talking about enough that you can facilitate another student and help them out.

In a republic like America, I'm not sure if democracy is the way to go. Its only ideal when our beliefs are the majority, 'ya know? If we had a true democracy then segregation would still be enforced since the majority of americans, especially in rural areas, felt the Warren court was out of hand and this is totally off topic to what you wrote about so I'll end it now.
