Mediation
Tuesday. 10.10.06 6:17 pm
PreFlection: This article shows mediation because it shows how it is commonly used...to solve problems between two parties that won't communicate with each other. Mediation is commonly used when there is land disputes and injury claims. A 3rd party will go inbetween the two rooms that the people that have disagreements are sitting in and try to help them come to a agreement. Mediation is good because it helps people be friends.

Mediation is a very good thing because then it won't waste court time that could be used for more serious matters. Mediation is good for schools and other enviroments where the issues that need to be solved don't need a super formal way to fix it.

PostClass:Well, I definetly have a better understanding of mediation after today. I think that the activity we did was really good, it demonstrated what mediation was about and then we had to go through all the steps of mediation to come to our written agreement. I think that when we get to do activities like that, we will get a better grasp on how to acutally use it in real life. I mean we use all the concepts of democracy in our lives far more often than we really probably realize it, but doing something like acting it out makes us more farmiliar with the concept and we know how to use it better. I also had no idea that mediation was so popular with like land disputes and other small matters like that. I definetly think its a good thing that people mediate things like that instead of taking up the time in court that other more important issues need. Mediation in our school is also a good idea. I know at our high school we had the mediation group but im pretty sure no one went to it because people just fought it out. But I think that with the community that we have, a mediation group really would benefit us, if there is ever a big problem that needs mediating. Now that our cohort has learned about mediation, we might be able to handle our problems by ourselves, and not need a mediation group, but we can help with mediating becuase we are experienced mediators! Just kidding. But yeah, thats about all I have to say about mediation for right now.

How I used it: We had a negotiation in speech and i wasnt the mediator but i know that i used these skills to come to a final agreement. we were all willing to work for a common goal, and we tried really hard to stay on topic. the mediator in our group was really good and let each of us speak about a subject as a country to the rest, then let us talk to each other. but she let us all talk separately so we could hear each others opinions first.
