knocking at my basement door....

There is a man living in my basement. He pays me for this privilege. The only entrance to the basement is outside the house. And the heavy oak doors that are about 45 degrees off the ground can be locked from the outside.
Last week I was watching TV when I decided that it would be nice to lock him down there; just for laughs. I locked the door and waited next to it while reading a magazine. I probably sat there for about an hour and a half but no shouting or knocks were heard. Suddenly my mom shouts from inside that my girlfriend was on the phone. I run in and forget all about my practical joke. While I was having dinner a couple of hours ago my dad comments that he hadn’t seen James (the man living in my basement) for the past few days.
Now I am facing a quandary should I go see if the door is still locked and if it is, should i unlock it?
You should unlcok it. Is that the only exit?
