When people tease me about things, it is funny at first, but when that is the only thing I hear from them about me, I start to think that that's what they really think about me, and they just say that they're joking so that they can say really mean things and not get called out for it. Then it really gets me down. I'm glad your boyfriend called you out on it because I do think people do it without realizing it, especially if their parents do it. It is nice to have a partner who supports you, not one who tears you down, especially in front of your friends. There's this book by Milan Kundera--The Unbearable Lightness of Being--where he talks about one of the female characters wanting to crush her partner because he was so vulnerable and she was relatively closed-off, emotionally. It made me notice way more that I tend to get harsher with the jokes when people are emotionally-open and vulnerable. The cycle sucks and I ended up feeling like a total a-hole about it.
