In 2006, the Marshall-Newman Amendment was passed.

"Only a union between one man and one woman may be a marriage valid in or recognized by this Commonwealth and its political subdivisions. This Commonwealth and its political subdivisions shall not create or recognize a legal status for relationships of unmarried individuals that intends to approximate the design, qualities, significance, or effects of marriage. Nor shall this Commonwealth or its political subdivisions create or recognize another union, partnership, or other legal status to which is assigned the rights, benefits, obligations, qualities, or effects of marriage."

I just did a research paper
on this exact thing. It is absolutely ridiculous how close minded and ignorant some people can be.
I also HATE how amendments and laws are passed only because people have no idea what they mean. They are all so wordy that 1) Generally people do not have the time to sit and read it and then figure out what exactly they're trying to say and 2) they just don't understand the phrasing so they just vote for it because it sounds nice.
