Now I'm going to die. Great.

My friend IMs me today to say that someone's been diagnosed with mumps.

Later, I get the following email:

A classmate of yours has been diagnosed with a probable case of mumps.
You are strongly encouraged to review your own medical histories to ensure immunizations are complete - 2 doses of the MMR vaccine.

If you are unsure of your status, call Schiffert Health Center Medical Records (540) 231-8104 8am - 5pm, Monday-Friday or 9am - 12pm, Saturday.

In addition to vaccination, other prevention measures for reducing transmission include frequent hand washing, using alcohol-based hand sanitizers (such as Purell), covering coughs and sneezes, and avoiding the sharing of glasses and utensils. You are encouraged to seek medical attention as soon as you experience any symptoms.

If you have further questions call the Schiffert Health Center at 231-#### or the Triage Nurse at 231-####.

Now I'm going to die for sure. Ranor and Debi have suggested that, while I'm going to die, I should be glad that I don't have testicles to swell up and make me sterile... Though If I die, Dave could catch mumps and his testicles would swell up and he would be sterile... and now I'm just being insane. I'll stop now.

oh wow. I've never known of anyone getting the mumps ... its such a rare disease. I doubt very much if you'll get it, though. and you're definately not going to die

Who EVER gets mumps anymore?

Ah, well. Be glad you aren't a dude, at least. A rare symptom of mumps is the swelling of the testicles (or, to put it medically: "orchitis," which admittedly sounds more like a condition involving creatures from a fantasy novel).

Don't ask me how I know that. All you have to know is that my mother's a nurse and my childhood was not at all very typical...

I didn't know people could still get the mumps!

Very weird, and I hope you do not die.

Good luck.

Glad to hear my good tidings have allayed your fears. =P

I thought people stopped getting the mumps in the fifties or something? :S

I don't even know what they do.

I've heard of mumps but I have no idea what it is. I think I should hit the google website now.

Don't die.
I believe in you - you can do it!

/end cheesy-ness

That's very rare for someone to get that. Although it's becoming more and more common for people to not vaccinate their children now for "religious and personal reasons" so it might end up being more common. I'm sure you'll be fine =D

In reply to your comment: I had to laugh. I'm probably in that same numbing category as you. It took the dentist 5 shots before I couldn't feel pain from her drilling my two teeth anymore. But she gave me a shot when I wasn't numb enough. That's how we figured out that I need the extra strong stuff, the usual stuff wasn't working.
