So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

I'm back in Providence
Tuesday. 10.23.07 7:31 am
I'm working.

On the way home on the airplane I sat next to a man who seemed to have a lovely wife and horrific grandchildren. He had just finished a grand tour of Europe, including several cruises around the Baltic and the Mediterranean.

He was an electrical engineer (well, he was before he retired, and he's been retired for a while). He graduated from UDubb, and then moved down to Arizona in 1965 because his wife had gotten a job there. She might have been his wife at the time but I'm not sure. She was sitting across the aisle because they both wanted aisle seats. He packed all his stuff in his car and drove down over a weekend, having no idea what he was going to do when he got there. On Monday he went and got an interview, interviewed that day, and went to his first day of work on Tuesday. The rest, as they say, is history.

Ah, simpler times. Remember when we broke into the storage room in the basement of Oldenborg and saw the applications to the college filled out in the early 1900s? One page, front and back. No 500 word essays--just a short paragraph describing what interests you. No official transcripts--just a list of grades signed off by a school official. No SAT scores, no AP testing, no $60 application fee. I bet they didn't interview back then (not that I did either), and I'm sure that if, on a whim, you'd want to register for school in the fall, you could take the application and turn it in the day before the term started and it would be okay...

In other news, if I applied to Johns Hopkins for an M.S. in Biotechnology and by some miracle got in, how much more often would I get to see you compared to now?

If the answer is even "once more a year," then it's probably worth it. We could meet each other half way in NYC.

Why, yes I do!
The little girl is me, and the lady is my great great great auntie, Jessie. She lived till she was 101!

I always wish I could talk to the people I sit next to on flights, but they're usually listening to music. I love Arizona.

Oh, see, because you misinterpreted my hypothetical-hypothetical for a humorous hypothetical-actual.

IF it were to happen--and it hasn't (yet?)--then we could rejoice.

Although, if I DIDN'T get in, I definitely would quit this taking-classes thing and go work full time for a year or two before re-applying. And working full time = more money = eastwardly plane tickets. So I guess it could be seen as a win-win.
