Afirmative Action
Thursday. 11.6.08 1:38 pm

To be honest, I say 'good riddens' to affirmative action, and I wish more states would do away with it. I really don't feel it's necessary anymore. Not because racism doesn't exist.. but because at this point if you're discriminated against for your race, age, gender etc there are plenty of actions you can take. You can sue, for one thing.

In that light, I really feel affirmative action is an outdated measure that needs to be abolished. People shouldn't get jobs or grants or be accepted to colleges because that employer or educational institution needs to fill their quota of minorities. It should be based SOLELY on merit. End of story. That's my opinion anyway.

The more I read and watch news about the gay marriage ban in California, the more I'm glad I don't live there anymore. I'm also glad I won't have to face my dad or anyone in his church. I really don't think I could deal with that. I know they think they're doing the right thing, but that's what makes intolerance all the more disgusting and disturbing is when someone doesn't do it out of hate, but thinks they're doing it because it's right.

I'm considering starting a website/forum for non-religious people like me. People who've been in church, were raised in church, and have come to the realization that they don't believe in religion anymore. It's a difficult path to walk, especially when you come from a religious family. It can be lonely, because you can't share your beliefs (or lack thereof) with your family.

Anyway, it's something I'm thinking about. Not sure if anyone would even join. heh.

As a minority, I feel like our achievements are cheapened by affirmative action policies. To me, it would seem like there would be some doubt in the back of my mind whether or not I succeeded purely on my own merits, or whether I was accorded this success by others because of a quota or because I did well compared to other minorities. It is an insulting policy. I have always been of the mindset that true equality is built from the ground up. Instead of doling out glorified pity-prizes in the name of equality, the playing field should be as reasonably level as possible early in life so we don't have to play a game of catch-up later.

If you start a site, I'm joining.

Maybe we can say 'good riddance' to it, but somehow I feel like there should be something else to solve the racism problem. Not everyone has the money to sue...
