Help needed!
Thursday. 8.2.07 3:11 am
Yes, the title is correct, I need your help! For the very important ISU(an assignment) given by Ms Ford, my Eng4U teacher, I need you guys to help me choose a book(I have never read any one of the books before) to read by the 13th of August. If any of you have read any of the books below, please leave a comment or send me a note, about the story and what you guys think about it.

Stranger in the Forest, Eric Hansen
World of Wonders, Robertson Davies
Fifth Business, Robertson Davies
The MAnticore, Robertson Davies
Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, Gregory Maguire
Nineteen Eighty-Four, George Orwell
Frankenstein, Mary Shelly
The Bluest Eye, Toni Morrison
Life of Pi, Yann Martel
Haroun and the Sea of Stories, Salmon Rushdie
The Poisonwood Bible, Barbara Kingsolver
The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle Haruki Murakami
Waiting for Snow in Havana, Carlos Eire
The Stranger Albert Camus
Siddartha, Herman Hesse
The Trial, Franz Kafka

I can choose a book which is not on the list(stictly NO Harry Potter, Stephen King, or Dan Brown) and it has to explore the differences of illusion, reality and the modern world. I've talked to renaye yesterday and she did suggest a book which I've forgotten the title but I have no idea what it is about. The good news is that she has one of the book, Life of Pi by Yann Martel, but I don't know if I can borrow it from her to do this assignment as she just bought it somewhere this week and I don't think so I can afford another book after buying Harry Potter and Eclipse(which is going to cost me about RM200, thanks to me not wanting to wait for 2 months for it). Though that is totally out of the topic...

And as I excepted, I really am in the "calm before the storm" situation as I'm quite busy this weekend thanks to assignments, presentations, tests and ...more assignments which are all due by Wednesday.

Thanks for reading and really thank you for those who're planning to help me with the book titles.

Hugs To: alexsedotcx, ikimashokie, lazypuppy, invisible, and crz4manga.

my sister suggested reading Skin by Ted Dekker. I know you read about me writing about it, but she said its the perfect book to go along with your wanting to recognize the difference between reality and illusion. so if you can find that book maybe that would work. if that doesn't work then she also suggests Frankenstein {cuz its a classic} and Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister. does that help any?

The only book I've read out of that list is Siddhartha, by Herman Hesse. That book was pretty challenging... in my opinion.

& the 13th of Aug. is my boyfriend & I's 2nd anni. [which has nothing to do w/ your blog, sorry. haha]

The last book i've read was The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. I liked it.

Frankenstein and 1984 are classics. The former is about an irresponsible scientist and his invention and the latter is a dystopian novel about a totalitarian state.

The Poisonwood Bible is really good, but long and complex, I'm not sure if you can finish by the 13th unless all you do for the next week and a half is read. It has five narrators and it's about a Southern U.S. minister travelling as a missionary with his family to the Congo and how their belief of their own superiority (in relation to the African villagers) is misguided. Highly recommended.

Life of Pi is entertaining and relatively easy to read. Pi gets lost at sea after the ship carrying his family and his zookeeper father's animals sinks. He ends up stuck in a boat with some animals, including a hyena and a tiger. It has a lot of religious and illusion/reality motifs. It may be the best choice considering the assignment.

The Stranger is short, but it deals with existentialism, so it may be a little weird and/or confusing by yourself. That's how I felt when I read it. It's a good discussion book.

Murakami is a good author, but I haven't read that particular title.

Life of Pi is by far my favorite book of all time. It starts off very slow, but it really is amazing and worth the time it takes to read it.

I haven't read The Trial, but I have read other things by Kafka and he's a great author, so you might want to try him out as well.

Hahahahhhahha! Finally, someone who gets the story! Well, since it's a "family gambling machine", then the whole family isn't broke! Cuz all their money is stored inside =P.
» ShaShaBoo on 2007-08-03 05:28:09

nope.... i havent read any of them >.< but i have read dan brown and harry potter ^^
» crz4manga on 2007-08-04 12:08:40

thanks!
It's just difficult because we're trying to build a fan base, if you will, and it's hard when those that seem to be fans do not show up. Makes us wonder how we'll get anyone else to show up. But we're giving it time. These things take time! =0)

This might be a little cliched (but then again, isn't everything these days), but you might want to try Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk.

From the list, I recommend 1984 and The Stranger. I also think that you might think about reading another Murakami novel called Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World. It's nearly 400 pages but I found it to be a good read. Depending on how fast you read, though, maybe one of the other would be a better choice. :)

its actually Oct. 5th, not the 8th. and spending that much money, it better be in good condition. I'd be pissed too if it weren't. yay for Eclipse!
