Bon Odori - A festival celebrated by the Japanese
Tuesday. 7.24.07 11:40 am
Dear Diary,

What will u looking for when the summer strike in Malaysia? (although it seem to be summer all year long) Yes, the Bon Odori festival that celebrated by the Japanese in Malaysia which held at both Penang and KL-Shah Alam.

Last year i been to KL-Shah Alam's Bon Odori, it was interesting despite the traffic jam. Upon arrival i saw a big tall stage where the dancers occupied to dance around the drum. However the foods was abit dissapointing. But overall was great.. and not to miss or to forget.

This year on the 21 July 2007, I'm in Penang so eventually i wont miss out the fun of Bon Odori here, since i never been there although i been staying here for centuries.. lmao..

Me n my friend reach there around 7pm due to the jam and the fans were "sold out" .. lol so we hang around and look around the booth and enjoying the dances.

However when the clock strike 7.30pm, cloud accumulated and it started to rain so we walked in the rain to a near by store for our dinner (since the foods at Bon Odori was not promising). Of course before we start moving to get our food, i bought a big belon that end up became the center of attraction to a mamak store that i dine in.

I bring the belon all along the road, and everyone was watching at me, and when i reach the mamak store, i let my belon sit on one chair and everyone was staring, including the waiter trying to poke my belon [email protected]@

Worse still, after eating, my friend asked me to wait outside the shop, and this tourist, was staring when i walked out and finally he said... is fragile... lol i told him my belon move towards the earth not the sky since it cant float. And i told him that he can get the belon at Bon Odori Festival few blocks away... and guess what, he actually walked towards the festival... muahahah (im good at promoting... lmao)

Okay, after the dinner, we walked back to the festival since the rain had stop and joined by another 2 friends, and upon arrival at the festival again, i was busy snapping pictures and i move closer to the stage and enjoying the dance in the near distance...

The music was nice, but repeated every now and then, and it actually adapted our local song too... Rasa Sayang...

"Rasa sayang, hey! Rasa sayang sayang hey,
Hey lihat nona jauh, rasa sayang sayang hey."

the last few dance was interesting, they r from Malaysia Penang Japanese Something something Hibiscus group that dance with kids as young as 5 years old... they are so damn cute....

And soon the dance end, the needle hit 9.30pm, fireworks were display for 3 minutes, and everyone was wowing and ccheering..... and i was busying capturing it into video form... lol

Before i end my words, allow me to present u with the pictures that i had taken during my visit...

upon arrival

Belons...

Catch a gold fish...

Look at the sky

The dance, dancers

Today Is Chinese Ghost Festival
Friday. 8.15.08 12:25 am
Dear Diary,

Today is the 15th of 7th month lunar calendar, we Hokkien ethnic consider it as the biggest day to celebrate the Chinese Ghost Festival day.

In the morning or afternoon, praying will be done outside the shop or at the house, fruits, vege, and a must of [chicken, duck, pork] to be serve during the prayer.

Of course, my parents are busy preparing now :P since I have to sit at the shop, so I don’t take part at the praying.

During this day itself, mostly all Chinese at Penang, like hawker stall or food stall, do not do their business, is consider a very big event that needed a day off.

Erm… many believe that unexplained things will happen during this day…. Ya know super natural cause @@’’

Talking about praying, Hokkien ethnic will pray on the 15th and as what renaye said seeing ppl praying around yesterday were mostly Cantonese which pray on 14th.

Tonight, ill help my mum do the praying on the road side, the purpose is to pray for those “lost soul” .

Too bad I dare not take any picture during this month and during the praying, because I don’t have the guts to look at the picture. Who knows what you might see…

During the whole 7th month of lunar calendar, all Chinese temple (mostly what I see is at Penang) they will set up a stage that have different program in it.

In the old days, they often have this Chinese opera, [those with thick makeup and costume] I used to watch it FOR FREE near the temple at my old house. :D. Today, the kind of forgo the Chinese opera, instead now they hired infamous singers to sing on the stage. haha

But the purpose of all this stage is for the dead as well as the God. Erm, someone once told me the chair set up near the stage are not allow to sit, because it was mean for the ……

Well how true is my story, I would not said 100% is, because it was pass down from my grandma to my mother, and to me… n I believe it been circulated for many many many many many many years b4. :P

Oh before I end it, tomorrow is my Lunar calendar bday, my grandma once told my mum not the “deliver” me on the 15th, lol so luckily I was out at 16th :p hence im so lucky enough to have my bday fall on 31 August which is Malaysia’s national day.. yay

Bon Odori 2009 (Penang) Disclaimer: lots of pics
Sunday. 7.19.09 9:54 am
Dear Diary,

After a 2 years break of not joining the fun of Bon Odori, this year i once again stepped my foots over the greenie grass of Esplanade together with sensei no musume tachi (teacher's daughters), since i do not wish to drive there, and since my teacher needed someone to accompany the daughters, so i tag along ~ win win situation :D.

We reached the destination around 530pm, and you bet, kondeimashita yo (was crowded), we walked around the field, and bought our RM20 coupons (dislike the system tho but i think was fair) and started wondering off the stalls, seems like a food fair than a Bon Odori for me, but since it had already combined the culture of Malaysian, so nothing more to expect right? Not much of edible foods, since it were too expensive, one small korokke charged RM5 @@'' TOTEMO TAKAI DESU! so i pass and bought myself a toriyaki (mada mada oishii) and mushroom and fish tempura.

We lurked around the area, wanted to try our luck at "Gold Fish Catching" but the crowd was horrible, so we passed, after our dinner, we went straight to the stage to enjoy the dance performances prepared by the organizer, dancers from Penang Japanese Foundation, from Japan and etc.

the 1st dance performance while i was there was Souran Bushi, Fisherman dance, i thought Hikawa Kiyoshi Souran Bushi will become the background song, but to my dissappointment it did not, seems like every years the songs never changed... YAWN.... after Souran Bushi was the dancers from Japan, and followed by the local Japanese :D yes the dances were nice, and the songs were okay, haha but it always have the Rasa Sayang song @@''.

Once the dances started to repeat, we headed to SGGS haunted house that gave me a good laugh. We were there queing and i found RM7 coupons, but later i found the owner so i gave it back, (am i stupid? nah!). The haunted house was not scary at all, and it smell so strange with all the sweat ! eww... When we walked into the haunted house, i saw students wearing all those clothes, and seriously is not scary! And there was this "Ghost" trying to block my way, i used my fan to move his katana aside and walked pass, and once im out from the haunted house , i cant stop laughing, so did my teacher's daugther. this gonna be the last time im going to the haunted house.

When the clock hit 10pm, the firework (hanabi) display for 5 minutes were shown, it were beautiful, but of course we can't compare it to the real Hanabi at Japan, but overall I'm happy. :D

The Jam was horrible tho..
