The "God hates fags" problem.
Sunday. 1.27.08 10:09 pm
(I'm sorry for the title. But I bet that if that caught your attention, you'll not regret reading on.)

Well, I finally got around to seeing The Golden Compass today, and I have a few words.

I promise that they aren't entirely what you're expecting.

Firstly, I wish I hadn't heard all that jazz about its blatant anti-church themes. I think I would've liked the movie a lot more if I hadn't had expectations.

It was pretty good, over all. Some pretty odd plot holes, but that's kind of irrelevant.

I was watching this movie, and I was wondering. They guy, who wrote it, Phillip Pullman. The analogies that he's creating about the Church and Christians are so wrong. Some aspects just don't relate to the real world. At least, not since the Dark Ages. Ahem.

But that, also, is not the main concern. Though the face that he gives to Christianity is indeed very harsh, it isn't entirely untrue. I really hate the way pastors and such are portrayed in movies. All the hate they show? The cruelty? What the heck, you guys must have a huge chip against us.

But what really gets to me, what I hate the most, what keeps me up at night, is that there are pastors out there who will protest same sex marriages with signs reading "God hates fags." I'm sure there are. And when I see that, I sympathize with you non-Christians. (I know, I'm awful, putting you in a group like that.)

Seriously. If you're a Christian and have thrown hate around in God's name, you need to rethink your ministries. That doesn't pertain to just ministers and the like. People like me, kids, teens, people who influence their friends. Watch what you say, because people are watching you. If you say you are with Jesus, then ACT LIKE IT.

God does not hate gay people. Sure, it's wrong. But you aren't perfect. You sin all the time, too. Being gay isn't some sort of disease. It's not a mental or emotional weakness. A person can't chose to not be gay any more than you can chose to stop lusting, or being prideful, or any other vice you DO have. If God hates gay people, he hates everybody. And that's not the way it is, folks.

And if you DON'T follow Christ, well... I'm sure you've gotten some of flak from Christians who are being more of a jerk than is needed. You might be bitter about it. Heck, I would be. But at the very least, let me personally apologize for the hurt they caused you. Believe me, we're not all jerks. I go to a wonderful church with an amazing youth group. If you've ever stepped into a church and felt awkward, well, that's your fault. :P But if you feel that the people there are actively shunning you in any way, you need to find a better, friendlier church. Just make sure they actually teach the Bible. (I've heard tale of Churches who just teach general peace. That totally doesn't cut it.)

Please, give me your feedback. But remember, I come in peace? Did I walk all over your feelings? Did something really stick to you? Tell me about it. Really, I want to know what things are like outside my little city.

Yes, I believe people could choose not to be gay...but it is almost impossible without Christ. Sin desires to overtake people, as God said to Cain, "Sin is crouching at your door, its desire is for you, but you must master it." It's not like everyone is nuetral in this...sin desires people, and if they have no strength or reason to lean upon, they're going to be taken.

Even for the people who believe it's an inborn disease, well...first of all, could God not heal it if desired? And second of all, no one actually acts like it's a disease. No one is doing research to find medication for it. No one diagnoses people with homosexuality. People may say it's a disease as an excuse, but honestly, no one is treating it like one, many people even think it is normal, but will say that anyway so it seems ok. It's sorta frustrating, really.

I heard that the God Hates Fags people are going to picket at Heath Ledger's funeral, because he was in Brokeback Mountain. Those people are absolutely CRAZY. You should look them up on wikipedia to read about their craziness. Those people always make me feel bad because I see the damage that they are doing to Christianity as a whole.
It reminds me of the song "If We Are the Body". If you can find it or just the lyrics I think you'd really like it. I think it's by Casting Crowns.

I saw the Golden Compass without realizing that the target was the Church, since they downplayed the connnection a lot in the film. I thought it could have just as easily passed for secular government, because the "authority", with its hidden, sterile laboratories and complicated procedures for separating the soul from the body doesn't seem very much like a church at all. In fact, it seems more like old-guard Academia to me, where they would suppress "pseudoscience" like this "dust" nonsense and do experiments on children where they remove their souls for their own good so that they can grow up to be rational and reasoning adults without being hindered by an animal partner who serves no real purpose but which we keep around for sentimental reasons. I bet there are scientists these days who would like to isolate the part of the brain that make us think we have a soul and then remove it.

I'd like to read the Golden Compass books, though, because it seems like in the movie they just tried to cram in too much stuff in too short a period of time.

Yeah, Lyra is misbehaved in an uncharming way. You feel like someone with authority (aka DAD) should give her a good whipping. It's all good to disobey evil adults who are trying to kill people, but Lyra is disobediant and cocky and talks back to adults that ARE trying to take good care of her. And that's annoying.
