I'm not really good at describing things but I'll try....

The book is one in a series called A Song of Fire and Ice. They're kind of fantasy novels. There's a somewhat medieval setting, but summer/winter can last for years. The old king died, so there's war in the Seven Kingdoms. Basically the books are about a bunch of different characters that are involved some way or another in the war.
