Ct�sias de Cnide (une ancienne ville grecque situ�e en Anatolie, r�put�e pour ses m�decins) �tait un m�decin et un historien grec, entr� au service d' Artaxerx�s II, le roi de Perse, qu'il a d'ailleurs accompagn� en campagne contre son fr�re Cyrus le Jeune, en 401 av. J.-C. Sa date de naissance et de mort sont inconnus mais il a exist� pendant le Ve si�cle av. J.-C et est mort apr�s 398 av. J.-C, date � laquelle il quitte le service d' Artaxerx�s II. Ct�sias a clairement connu beaucoup de succ�s dans sa carri�re, au service d'une famille royale et il a pu voyager et �crire des comptes-rendus de ses p�r�grinations � l'�tranger.

Mais Ct�sias, � mes yeux, a �t� aussi l'un des plus grands fabricateurs de bobards, plus fantasmagoriques, �difiants et d�lirants les uns que les autres, qui aient jamais exist� sur Terre. Le contexte d'alors s'y pr�tait encore mieux qu'aujourd'hui et il aurait eu tort de s'en priver.

Ct�sias est, entre autres, l'auteur d'un ouvrage ayant pour titre "L'Histoire de l'Inde", ou il �num�re une collection de cr�atures fabuleuses, sens�es peupler le Sous-Continent: on doit � Ct�sias d'avoir ainsi propag� le mythe de la licorne, des Cynoc�phales, de la manticore et des Sciapodes, pour ne nommer que quelques uns des monstres qui allaient hanter l'imaginaire occidental pendant des mill�naires...

Pour sa d�fense, parce que ces �tres fantastiques ont nourri notre part de r�ves, de cr�ativit� et de fantasmes qui nous sont finalement si ch�res, Ct�sias aurait simplement mal compris des animaux ou des pratiques qui lui auraient �t� d�crits: ainsi la licorne serait bas�e sur le rhinoc�ros indien, effectivement pourvu d'une seule corne et qui existe r�ellement, re-imagin� par les esprits de ce temps, faute d'appareil photo... Le mythe �tait accept� d�s lors comme une r�alit� parce qu'inv�rifiable par la majorit� du public et �manant de personnages qui faisaient figure d'autorit�s en la mati�re. Ceci �tant dit, je doute fort que Ct�sias ait fait du tort � qui que ce soit en racontant n'importe quoi sur l'Inde � l'�poque.

Il est int�ressant de noter que la possibilit� de raconter n'importe quoi parce que l'information demeure inaccessible et inv�rifiable pour la grande majorit� du public est toujours pr�sente de nos jours. L'Internet, qui permet la propagation de mythes urbains par exemple, est le premier exemple qui vient � l'esprit mais les media conventionels (la radio, la presse �crite, la t�l�vision, etc) rapportent aussi des mythes, invent�s � la seule fin de justifier les actions de certains gouvernements ou organisations. La seule consolation(?) de nos jours est que souvent le mythe ainsi cr�� n'a plus la possibilit� de perdurer pendant 2000 ans.
