"In the long history of U.S. wars of annihilation and racial subjugation, the Black and Seminole resistance shines as a glorious example of solidarity between courageous peoples. The Seminole, largely comprised of Native Americans previously displaced by savage ethnic cleansing in the southern states, and escaped slaves found common cause in Spanish Florida, where they created a multi-cultural community and armed force against the encroaching "Americans." In three separate wars between 1816 and 1858, combined Black-Seminole forces caused the deaths of thousands of white troops. The greatest victory occurred the day before Christmas, 1837, at Lake Okeechobee, where "every [U.S.] officer, with one exception" was brought down."
