Pioneer Trek
Thursday. 7.5.07 6:10 pm
i haven't posted in here for a long time. Well i recently went on a pioneer trek and it lasted for 3 days. So that would be three days without showering haha, or you can make it two. We had hand carts and we pushed them for 13 miles. On the first day we hike with our 500 pound cart for 7 miles. The wagon kicked up a lot of dust that got in my nose. It was gross, i'd blow my nose and it was all brown boogers! haha on the trek we could only bring 15 pounds of stuff, no cell phones, or any electronics. For the girls we wore pioneer skirts, long sleeve button up shirts, and bonnets. Oh yeah and we had to wear bloomers under our skirts.

The first day was brutal with a lot of up hills and rocky treking. The rocks would sometimes slide too. People were dead walking because we almost ran over the people in front of us. Pushing a 500 wagon up a steep hill, in 100 degrees weather was killing everyone. The second day we had a hill called, testimony hill and it is supposed to be the hardest hill because it's extremely steep and the terrain is all powdery sand that you can easily side on. Basically if you fall, you're doomed to cut up your leg. Our handcart company had about 12 carts, and everyone needed to help push the carts up the hill. The second day it was about 2 miles of a steep hill that we all had to hike up with our 500 pound wagons. My "family" was the last group, so you would figure we'd be the hardest to get up the hill. The boys energy was all drained by the time they came back down the hill to push us up. This hill is so steep you couldn't even walk up even if you didn't have a wagon to push. how to i know? Because I'm weak and took a breather by walking behind the wagon a little. It was fine though because there was no where i could have pushed on the wagon anyways. Yes, anyways out of all the track practices I've had this is by far the hardest thing I've had to endure physically.

Each group was divided into families, and the families were real families that went across the plains. Lucky for them it was plains, but the bad thing was that they went through the snow with killed 20% of their company. Anyway, so i was a 46 year old widow and i live to the end hahaha. Everyday the company would trek for 20 miles. I couldn't even do 7. I loved my family, because once you're put into a group where you're forced to help each other it bonds you. We played a lot of games as a family too, haha we were known as the game family. Oh yeah out family name was the McPhails. I know, why couldn't we just be called the McLosers. haha we ended up renaming ourselves, McSucess. Our group was just so strong, we all pushed even if we were at our limit and we passes a lot of groups up too. Going on the pioneer trek also gave me new friends.

Our third day it was a lot of winding up hills, swtchbacks, and a lot more of endurace. It was also the day we had to say goodbye to everyone, it was kind of sad. But i just know i'd see them again. Oh yeah! The first night we had on our trek we had a big hoedown! My friend Noah and I entered a little concert thing too. When ever there is a dance we always dance together, i don't know... we just always go to each other haha whenever they say get a partner. ANyway so we did this dance and i still forgot the name of it... we were standing there and the guy who was leading the dances was explaining it to everyone. So Noah and I looked at each other and were like, "Oh yeah we have to win!" and started laughing "Yeah we could easily win this." If a couple messed up he would come over and tap your shoulder saying to get out of the line, or you could just jump yourself out if you were too tired. We started dancing, and dancing, and dancing, we were laughing and were saying, "When is this stupid song going to end!!" Our muscles were giving out because of earlier that day. haha we ended up winning

I met Tami Freebairn and she's from Oahu. An i swear she's such a good friend, i want to keep her as a friend for the rest of my life! i mean, the friends i have no suck! They aren't good friends, and being on this trek i realized that i need more friends like her.

Food Menu:
Quail Eggs
Cereal bars
Mule & Buffalo Jerky
Dutch oven made chicken
Corn
potatoes
Watermelon
Chili
cornbread [ i hate chili... and especially cornbread]

Well you just have to eat whats given to you when you're starving, it's not like it's infected or anything.

Wow... that's really challenging..

What?!
I love cornbread -_-

Kudos on the rest of the hike, I suppose I can forgive you for not liking cornbread haha. It sounded intense, I probably would've done my share of complaining.

Haha McPhails...that's hilarious. I have this inside thing where I never write fail as fail, I always write phail, unless I'm writing it for a paper in which case I always say fail because I don't want to phail.

Yeah I'll shutup. But I really do that ;-)

That looks and sounds like so much fun! I want to do it! I have this one friend, she's obsessed with pioneers, she would love it. I'm glad you guys won the dance contest! and that thing about the McPhails is hilarious. ;)

I am so glad that you went on that trek. I hoped it helped to strengthen your testimony of the church. Or at least give you a greater understanding of what these people went through. It was like going to the museum of tollerance but this time you got to feel, the heat, taste the dirt and the sad part was burying the babies (dolls) as they did back then.

wow, that's cool.
when I went to the Philippines, when I blew my nose it'd be all gross-colored because of the pollution in the cities there.

I like your skirt! lol
