Santa's Workshop - Inside Europe's slave labor toy factories in China
Thursday. 11.30.06 5:30 pm
I could not figure out how to use the BB code or post videos here so I am making a post here with a link to my other blog. Just in time for christmas! When shoppers here in Canada, USA and Europe are busy buying gifts trying to get the best deal possible but hold on think about that great deal that you just got. Where do you think it was made? Who do you think made it? This video I found on Google is a very informative 32 minutes. A bit long to wait in front of the computer but an excellent piece that deserves your attention.
The video Santa's Workshop takes you to the real world of China's toy factories. Workers tell us about long working hours, low wages, and dangerous work places. Those who protest or try to organize trade unions risk imprisonment. Low labour costs attract more and more companies to China. Today more than 75% of our toys are made in China. But this industry takes its toll on the workers and on the environment. The European (and American) buyers blame bad conditions on the Chinese suppliers. But they say that increasingly hard competition gives them no option. Who should we believe? And what can you do to bring about a fairer and more humane toy trade?
From now on we need to be aware of where the things are comming from and who is making them. Part of the problem is that the consumer is just not aware of these things. With education maybe there is hope.
