iTunes has a new competitor in the market for digital music. And unlike iTunes, this service is free.
SpiralFrog, a New York based company that bills itself as a “digital entertainment destination,” has inked a deal with Universal Music to provide music and videos online, free of charge. The advertising supported service, which claims those between 13 and 34 as its target audience, promises its downloads will be free of viruses and spyware, making them safer than those offered by pirate sites.

"Offering young consumers an easy-to-use alternative to pirated music sites will be compelling," said Robin Kent, SpiralFrog's CEO. "SpiralFrog will offer those consumers a better experience and environment than they can get from any pirate site."
Legal downloading through sites like iTunes has been a boon for the record industry. According to Soundscan, digital track sales are up 77% from last year. Album downloads have increased 126%.
