Exactly. I mean, I despise the idea of competition when it gets out of hand: I had a friend who went to a high school where the top kids would go so far as to SABOTAGE each others' projects and stuff because they so desperately wanted the top spot. In that situation, however, people are behaving badly and SHOULD be punished for it. But, in the case of a school granting a scholarship to a good student, there should be some sort of reward. Not just because that person "out-competed" the other people who applied to the program, but as a sort of positive reinforcement so as to say, "Congratulations on all your hard work. We hope you keep it up here." Without recognition of ones' achievements, why continue to work hard at all? Some people might be able to continue being their best for personal reasons, but to me, at least, I get frustrated when I do something awesome--whether it's cooking or fixing something or doing well in school--and it goes unnoticed.
