My trip to
LensCrafters.
Let me first start by saying I have not worn glasses since I was 10 years old and got my first pair of contacts. When I was a kid my choices for frames were big clunky plastic frames with pink/purple or weird designs on them. They sucked. I hated glasses and loathed the fact I was the only one out of my friends who had to wear them.
My face is round and big and with my chipmunk cheeks my face is even bigger. I had no idea how horrible it would be to find glasses until yesterday. I force my boyfriend to go with me since he's honest and I don't trust sales people to tell you the truth. I'm there trying on pair after pair of glasses only to look over and see my boyfriend laughing. Half didn't even fit right on my face, most were too small while others too big. The cute ones I really wanted never looked right. It was awful. Hundreds of glasses and a third are cut out because I refuse to buy plastic frames. Visions of how I looked when I was a child come to my mind. I put a few on for fun though and I was right, they looked like crap. When your boyfriend almost doubles over from laughing you know you should stay away from them.
Finally after 20+ minutes my tray has 4 pairs of glasses. That's right four pairs. I finally get one of their specialist helpers. It's a small little Asian woman, well not really small since she is the size of a typical Asian woman, but me being oddly tall she was much smaller then me. The first thing she tells me when looking at what I picked was, "Oh no! Those frames are all too big for your face. We Asians have bigger faces so we need smaller square frames. I'll make sure we get you some smaller frames." She has on small very square and "in" type of metal glasses. They look cute on her, lucky bastard.
She moves towards the beginning of the selection to help me pick some and I whisper to Matt, "Be ready to call in my work for me. If she tries to stick me with small frames that look like crap on me I'm going to have to give her a beat down."
The first pair of glasses she handed to me were plastic. I looked down at them in my hands and then looked at her. "Try them on," she said smiling.
"No. I refuse to wear plastic," I replied bluntly.
"You'll look good," she said as if she was trying to assure me she had good taste.
"No. I wore plastic as a child and I refuse to now. They look bad on me," I replied in a firm tone. To make my point I tried them on, glared at her and then looked at my boyfriend who had a Cheshire cat grin on his face.
"We'll then we'll find you some metal frames," she said moving into another section without even confirming I was right.
"I swear if she tries to get me to buy something you don't like I'm going to walk out," I whispered to my boyfriend as I see her eyeing more small square frames.
After having her give me about 10 frames she decides to tell me something that if I was more sensitive about my round chipmunk cheek face I might have gotten upset over. In a blunt and yet half laughing tone she said, "The glasses look like a good size until you start to put them on and I see how small they are to your face." No shit Sherlock. She also made a comment on how my boyfriend was mean because he didn't say yes or no he always just laughed when I asked for his opinion. I told her I'd rather him laugh then lie and then I'd be stuck with glasses that don't look good on me.
After over a half an hour we finally decided on 3 different frames. It took us a minute to pick the one we liked the best out of those three. Yeah I know. The ironic thing is that they were the first pair I tried on. For kicks she had me try on her. My boyfriend laughed and then she started saying things she shouldn't have. She wanted his opinion. He's honest, it's one of the many reasons why I love him so much. I don't have to worry about him lying to me when I ask him if I look good in X outfit or not. She asks if he thinks her glasses are cute. He says yes. She asks if they look good on her. He doesn't say anything and after a while he says they look ok. Ok was obviously not the answer she wanted since she started to pout. She then started talking about how her son likes her wireless frames since they make her look younger, but I reminded her that wire frames tend to make people look smarter. She's sticking with wire frames.
Considering my discount covered the frames paying over 300 bucks for lenses seems like a lot, but that's why I have my caf. plan at work so I'll get my money back...kind of. I should get them by the end of next week so I should be able to wear them on the weekend.
When I tried them on seeing the rim of my glasses bugged me. I'm sure I was used to it as a kid, but since it was the 80's I probably never saw the rim since "big" was in. I hope I can get used to wearing glasses since in order to get the surgery I have to wear them everyday for 6 months to a year. I figure I'll get used to wearing glasses for the rest of this year and then next year I'll only buy glasses and the year after I'll get the surgery. My boyfriend was surprised at the cost and said they were too much for "f*** it glasses", but since I plan on wearing them all weekend plus a day or two during the week I think it's ok. I can't wait to show my co-workers. They've never seen me in glasses before and I look very different.
glasses aren't so bad. Im sure you will get use to wearing them again.
