SPOKANE -- This morning on June 1, 2006 02:02 A.M. the Spokane Fire Department was dispatched to a fire at 908 West Sinto, a 2-story multi-family apartment building. The person reporting the fire was a resident of the building and reported smoke and fire in the apartment building as they were evacuating. The first fire company arrived within 4-minutes and found heavy fire on the first and second floors on the southeast sides of the complex. First arriving ladder companies engaged immediately in the search and evacuation of residents in the 14 apartment units while engine companies began to fight the fire. A second alarm was struck at 02:14 A.M. which supplemented the initial resources and accommodated the aided-evacuation of nearly 30 residents overall and a quick knockdown of the rapidly progressing fire. During the early stages of the incident, Chiefs utilized a special ventilation tactic called a "trench cut" which prevented the fire's progression into the northern wing. At the time of this release, companies are still on scene accomplishing overhaul and salvage of the damaged apartments. Avista was requested through the incident commander and has shut off utilities to the building as precaution for firefighters and citizens. The Red Cross is on-scene assisting residents with accommodations and plans for recovery. There were no injuries or firefighter injuries during this incident; however a 45-year old resident was treated and released for symptoms reportedly to be smoke inhalation. The Fire Department's resources committed to this incident included; 3 Senior Ladders, 5 Engines, 1 Heavy Rescue, 2 Battalion Chiefs, 2- AMR Ambulance and Supervisor and multiple off-duty Chief Officers. The fire's cause is currently under investigation by the SFD Investigation Division and Lieutenant Phillips is currently processing the scene at the time of this release. Battalion Chief Bruce Moline was the incident commander and will update information if it is available. Damage to the first and second floors on the south most area of the building is substantial. Moderate levels of damage can be found throughout the building. Damage loss estimates are still being determined.
