Barren Illusion
"If the day and the night are such that you greet them with joy, and life emits a fragrance like flowers and sweet-scented herbs, is more elastic, more starry, more immortal- that is your success. All nature is your congratulation, and you have cause momentarily to bless yourself. The greatest gains and values are farthest from being appreciated. We easily come to doubt if they exist. We soon forget them. They are the highest reality. Perhaps the facts most astounding and most real are never communicated by man to man. The true harvest of my daily life is somewhat as intangible and indescribable as the tints of morning or evening. It is a little star-dust caught, a segment of the rainbow which I have clutched." - Henry David Thoreau

She was angry for looking like a female trailer-trash version of Bob Barker
domingo, 25 de agosto, 2008
I was walking down Madison Avenue when I saw a very old woman with a very unfortunate hairstyle -- the mullet. It was a light, silvery gray and it contrasted heavily with her dark, tanned skin. I averted my eyes quickly to something else, a building or a public pay phone, I don't remember, but it's rude to stare. I noticed a movement from the corner of my eye from the old woman, but I didn't really think about it. As I approached the crosswalk, my eyes roved back to the woman because she was practically in front of me. She had her middle finger ready and poised, the nail touching the bottom of her chin as if drawing some "fuck-you" power. No sooner had I turned my attentions back to her that she just launched the finger from her chin. Was she cursing me? Madison Avenue? Manhattan? The world?

I've lived in NYC all my life and never have I received so many flipped birds from strangers before! I feel like a true New Yorker now.

What's better than stuff on the cheap?
martes, 12 de agosto, 2008
Stuff for free! Staples Weekly Ad features prominently Elmer's glue, which they are basically giving away for their Back-to-School sale. Yeah, I'm not in third grade anymore, but the allure of a free product was too great to ignore. Also, it's supposed to be an inexpensive alternative for getting rid of blackheads.

I don't know if it's a regional deal (New York City metropolitan area), but still. This is literally a steal what with the price of gas and all, which doesn't apply to me because I don't drive.

I love yogurt
jueves, 24 de julio, 2008
So I tried making my own! It's really easy:

Gradually heat milk until it's boiling. Remove from heat and wait until the temperature drops to about 120°F/34°C (use a candy thermometer; I didn't have one so I used a meat thermometer :3). Take off the milk skin, then pour the warm milk in a jar with a few tablespoons of plain yogurt. I still had a layer of yogurt left at the bottom of the two-pound plastic tub I bought, so I just dumped my milk in that. Mix well, cover, then put it in an oven at about the same temperature (120°) or use an oven that has a pilot light. After six to seven hours, it's done. (A longer time will result in thicker yogurt.)

I'm sure there are many different recipes out there on the internet. I'm gonna try another next time, or maybe try straining it to get Greek yogurt aka labneh.

Who hates yogurt? I know some people do.

I killed another one
domingo, 6 de julio, 2008
Less than a year! These earphones lasted less than a year! This is a record for the shortest lifespan. They always break in the same way, in that one side just slowly stops working until no amount of wire jiggling can bring back da noise. Does one side of my head emit some anti-earphone fumes, killing them slowly? Am I alone in this or do other people's earphones have terribly short lives?

I... I'm just gonna save up for headphones. I just hope the 2.5mm earphones that came with my mp3 player won't break, too. I only started using them because, as I've been saying, my regular pair died.

This has been pissing me off for too many years.

I live like two blocks from where it happened.

I saw the empty bus pressed against the bank, its backside flattened the same way by the dump truck. My friend told me someone died, so at the time I thought someone sitting in the last row, but it turned out it was a pedestrian.
