So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

Expectations vs. Reality
Sunday. 1.15.17 4:35 am
Plan for today: Go to airport, fly to Paris, eat a croissant, meet up with M, go to Angelina's and drink the world's most delicious hot chocolate (choc africain), and delicious lemon tart, wander around Paris, following M's 'surprise' itinerary. Eventually go to Jacqueline's house and fall asleep on her king-sized couch bed.
Actual events: Go to airport, board plane... mechanical problem, flight is canceled. Get off plane, wait in line for three hours, get booked on flight for next day which is too late, wait on hold with another airline for 1h15, get someone who doesn't really speak English, try to speak Spanish, get told to call a couple of numbers that definitely don't work, eat Taco Bell in a shady parking lot at 1 am, return home.
The Thunder Rolls
Monday. 1.9.17 6:21 am
I was at work way too late, and I'm only just getting to bed at 3:20 am, but it means I get to hear a THUNDERSTORM!! They are so rare where I live... it's a great joy. It's been raining all week and last week... after so much drought it's really amazing. I got some mushrooms in my backyard, and today Juan Pablo and I climbed up a brilliant green grassy hill and sat over looking the city and the mountains, as he ate the grass and I rocked back and forth with the palm trees.
An Invitation From the Embassy

Into every life some rain must fall... mainly on a plain in Spain
Friday. 12.16.16 8:12 pm
Welllll, I just booked myself a trip to Spain and France for the last half of January. It's a work trip. I'm not really looking forward to it at the moment, because all I can think about are the extremely long flights and the hassle of dragging my suitcase through the metro systems. And who wants to just sit around hanging out with parties of 15 random work people at cafés in foreign cities when you could be at home playing with your dog? Eh? Hanging around with your local friends? Eh?
Clearly the 30s version of me would not even be recognizable to the 20s version of me.
But I will get to be back in that gorgeous city of Paris, mon amour d'autrefois. I met a guy on OKCupid who is also going to be in Paris at that time, so we might meet up and go to a restaurant I know where they offer all-you-can-eat prosciutto. This guy that I met is a moderately conservative American francophone geologist... don't find those very often.
And in Granada I'll spend most of the time listening to talks about the Martian atmosphere, but some of the time I'll go out and dance the Argentinian tango, and if those atmospheric physicists can do one thing, it is dance the tango. (If they can do two things, they can dance the tango and do atmospheric physics).
It was raining today, and I was coding.... UGH CODING IS SO HORRIBLE. I've put off going to France all this time because I'm going to have to do an enormous amount of coding between now and then to get everything ready, and coding / installing things Linux is poison to a man's soul.

Fancy Ball Time
Tuesday. 11.15.16 9:33 pm
I got invited to a fancy ball as the guest of someone I don't know who is in management (his wife couldn't come so I'm a last-minute replacement). It should be a good networking occasion but the attire is supposed to be formal... so in the next two days I have to find "networking formal attire". Networking formal attire that actually fits me, no less.... I haven't exactly been on a diet since my last fancy ball.
I got an award!
Wednesday. 8.17.16 12:47 am
Today I got another award! They brought me in to talk and just told me that I was doing a great job and that I should keep on doing what I'm doing.
I told them that I was glad to be working there.
What the F**k, Jon
Saturday. 8.13.16 3:21 pm
What the f**k, Jon.
I HAVE BEEN WATCHING THE DRAMA OF YOUR LIFE IN REGULAR INSTALLMENTS FOR, LIKE, TWELVE YEARS. Triumphs, tragedies, drama, overnight buses, crazy housing situations, a Pokemon-based engagement, She-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named, applications, graduations, ETC.
OK, IMAGINE, IMAGINE, for a moment, HAVING, as I have, as all of us have, READ THIS BOOK FOR TWELVE YEARS...
IN THE LAST INSTALLMENT OF THE BOOK, JON COMES TO MY HOUSE, HEARTBROKEN, hugging his Uber driver, we go to a waffle place, he drives to Sacramento and back in like three days for REASONS UNKNOWN TO GOD OR MAN, he flies back to London, SAD AS SHIT... CLIFFHANGER....
AND THEN THE AUTHOR TWEETS "BTW HE GETS MARRIED" and nobody in the fandom has ANY idea how to interpret that shit.
AND THEN ONE DAY I GO ON FACEBOOK, and THERE IS NOTHING THAT SAYS, "Spoiler Alert", no, no... there's just a picture of Jon marrying Antonia. SURPRISE! It ends up being Antonia! Happy Ending! Ha-ha!
You have to give us more than that, Jon. We have been your loyal fans for EVER. 4-EVER.
JUST AIN'T GOOD ENOUGH, SON.
"I met your mother and then she died but I'm really in love with Robin" was a better resolution than THIS.
btw Antonia, if you're reading this: Hi! Congratulations! Jon is a great guy!
JON IF YOU ARE READING THIS GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER. STOP YOUR HONEYMOONING RIGHT NOW, AND ALL OF THIS SMILING-IN-PHOTOS-ON-FACEBOOK-BECAUSE-YOU'RE-SO-HAPPY BULLSHIT AND GIVE US THE NUTANG ENTRY WE DESERVE.
