Best Dream EVER!
Saturday. 3.30.13 11:13 am
So, I had one of those dreams where I have all these pets and they keep multiplying on themselves and I don't know where they came from... but it was fun! I mean, really, really fun! We already had two mini Aussies, we spent the entire morning just running around, playing fetch, patting them on the heads, feeding them brushing them, and then there was a new one, a red dog, which threw me off a little, but I was so happy to have him, too. All the other dogs loved him and they were chasing each other all over the house. Now I'm exhausted... off to work.

A Walk not a Drag
Wednesday. 3.27.13 3:45 pm
I was dog-sitting this weekend and it has put me back in the mind of dogs and training. I remember, once while I was in Korea, I saw this lady on the street and she was being dragged mercilessly by her golden retriever. I stopped her and I said, "I hate to bother you, but would you like to learn how to teach your dog to stop dragging you" a wave of relief passed over her face, "YES PLEASE!" she said desperately. I took the leash and explained to her what I'm going to explain to you now.

There are many reasons why walks are fun for dogs, the most compelling of which is getting somewhere. Your dog is also motivated by interesting smells, fast moving objects and pulling, but what it boils down to is that if your dog is not moving, the walk is not a walk. Additionally, whatever you practice with your dog is what your dog will learn. So how does this apply to training your dog not to pull?

Well, what you do is you start off walking with your dog. If your dog gets ahead of you and especially when it starts pulling, turn around and go the opposite way. Your dog is flexible, they'll turn around with you get ahead of you and your job is to turn the other way. After about three or four (or forty) repetitions, you dog will start to get the picture: we go when the lady on the end of the leash is AHEAD of me, we stop when I'm ahead. They will start watching you, start watching your hips to see if your slowing down or speeding up and now, you've got a leash trained dog.

It's really that magical. You might look weird, but after all your neighbors realize what your doing, the whole block will be doing it. I spent five minutes with this stranger's golden retriever and the dog was walking like the most patient animal you have ever seen in your life. I did the same thing with a 130lb Saint Bernard at a shelter, once. No one wanted to walk him because he habitually dislocated your shoulder. After a half an hour of walking like a moron, he was patiently following me around the shelter. I have walked pit mixes, Rottweilers, miniature dachshunds, schnauzers, poodles, corgi mixes all with exactly the same results. IT WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE!

Alamo Drafthouse
Monday. 3.25.13 1:01 am
We went to the Alamo Drafthouse, today. They just started serving in our area. It's a dinner/movie idea and I really enjoyed myself. I would recommend it to anyone who wanted to do something fun in Denver.

Startled
Saturday. 3.23.13 12:02 am
I looked up. His eyes irises were bright red, culminating in an unnatural yellow right near his tiny pupils. Contacts, I realized. I smiled brightly and continued to check-out their books. Funny, I didn't even notice the piercings and tattoos.

There are a lot of reasons that I am getting a little worried about my ever present single status. Not the least of which:

And all those things listing the reasons why its good to be single? Not very helpful. I think the only thing that calms me down is thinking that I could devote my life to God and live a celibate life of contemplation and prayer, but socially, that doesn't really have a lot of appeal.

It's messed up, really. It is not focusing on the positive, at any rate. "Not single" has never been a goal that I wanted to pursue devoid of any higher purpose. I mean, after all, the reason why I want to date and get married and all that jazz is because I enjoy being with people and I want to find someone so special that we can be a team for the rest of our lives. It's the only best friend forever that you'll ever have. That's when Valentine's day is fun. That's when going to the movies and getting popcorn and holding hands, that's when its fun. Otherwise, its just hanging out with some bore and wishing you were anywhere else. And neither you nor the bore want that.

Still, you start to feel a little vain and stuck up. You don't click with a guy, you say "no" and its like "What, do you think you're too good for me?" And the truth is... no (well, not until you said that;) ) No, seriously. It's like that old game memory. You have an orange cat and a black and white cat and no matter how cat-like they both are, they just aren't a match. You have to keep flipping over the tiles until you find two that are the same. It's just hard to prove when you haven't found your orange cat.

...not that I want a cat... ever.
