Flavor Flav Leftover Gets Own Reality Show
    Thursday. 9.14.06 1:12 am

Wednesday - September 13, 2006 by Alexis Chase
    Flavor Flav

One of the lucky ladies from the first season of "Flavor of Love" has won another moment in the spotlight.

According to the entertainment magazine Variety VH1 is planning a spinoff of "Flavor of Love" starring one of the female oddballs from the series' first season.

The show will work similarly to ABC's "The Bachelorette" while incorporating some of the zany elements that have popularized "Flavor of Love." Viewers can expect a diverse cast of male contestants - ranging from lawyers to rappers and even the unemployed, all in competition for the love of Flav's former romantic interest.

While the network still hasn't disclosed which "Flavor of Love" contestant has been picked to star, VH1 has already approved production for 10 episodes of the currently untitled spinoff series. Production is scheduled to begin at the end of September, with the show airing in 2007.

"Flavor of Love" and "Flavor of Love 2" executive producers Mark Cronin and Chris Abrego who are also producing the new series, have decided that after two seasons it may be time to put the "Flavor of Love" series to rest.

"We are developing new show ideas with him," Chris Abrego said. "We think it's time for him to do something new. He's funny and a likable character."

As SOHH previously reported, Flav's first solo album, entitled Flavor Flav! is due out on October 31st on his Drayton Records label.

Currently in its second season, "Flavor of Love" airs on Sunday nights on VH1.

    Monica Ain't Nothing But... Tweet
    Tuesday. 8.29.06 10:25 am
Monica Ain't Nothing But... Tweet Do you remember the first time you heard "Don't Take It Personal (Just One Of Dem Days)" by Monica. That album was release July 18, 1995. Back then she was young and sassy yet sophisticated. Then Arista Records executive Clive Davis had done it again. He plucked a young girl from Atlanta obscurity similar to the way he plucked Whitney Houston from all her Newark glory and “packaged” her for a career as golden as her voice. Back then Monica sang songs that many criticized as being too mature. The rumor mill said that, “There is no way she can be 14.” Three years later (July 14, 1998), Monica released The Boy Is Mine, her sophomore CD. With favorites like “Misty Blue,” “Street Symphony,” “Angel of Mine” and of course the title track, a duet with Brandy. Monica went on to earn a Grammy Award despite how silly everyone thought it was for her to name the CD The Boy is Mine knowing that most of the world considered the chart-topping song to be Brandy’s since it too was the first single from her album which was released a full month earlier (June 9, 1998). The media perpetuated a feud between Brandy and Monica. Rumors flew that two didn’t get along or that Brandy had her vocals turned up higher than Monica’s on her album’s version of the duet. However rumors or no rumors, feuds or no feuds, they pulled of a flawless performance of the song on the 1998 MTV VMAs. Somewhere around the new millennium things got kind of… shaky. There was a suicide of a loved one, a baby, a marriage and a little something that was to become the gift and curse of Monica’s subsequent CDs… MISSY ELLIOT! (not in any particular order) When Monica released “So Gone” from After The Storm I immediately gave both her and Missy kudos. Missy had ushered Monica into a maturity that seemed fitting. Monica spread her wings a bit and let her “urban” sensibility surface a bit more. She was rapping on her first single. She even stopped covering the tattoos (covering them was something I think was more the label’s idea than hers). But After The Storm kinda came and went… like the tide, never making the impact that her nemesis Brandy did with Full Moon — the most perfect album in it’s category in all of 2002. Full Moon is a masterpiece but that is an argument for another day. (if you blank space, blame YouTube) All of this should bring us to the present. Monica is set to release her fourth studio album. She has received lukewarm reviews to the first single, “Every Time the Beat Drops.” Her original Sept 26th released date has been moved back a bit so that “Beat Drop” can either marinate or drop off the face of the Earth. I am sure the label will release another single before releasing the album. And if my instincts are correct, she will release one of those horrible Missy Elliot-produced singles. Which one you ask???? Take your pick. They are all mediocre to horrible in that there is no sense of growth. Rather than being a worldly Grammy Award winner, Monica comes off more like a talent show winner at the local Teddy T (ask Dig what the Teddy T is). A good friend of mine made a comment that Missy is stuck where R&B is concerned. Her concoctions for Monica… the Monica…. Clive Davis’ Monica… ain’t nothing but Tweet-esque tracks. Play any of the new Monica and then play Tweet’s second CD… Notice any similarities? Someone in the comment section said it best, "Monica should try to cultivate Mary J. Blige's audience, rather than let her blueprint be the antithesis of her groundbreaking success." Besides… we don’t see or hear from Tweet these days for a reason. She too should have cut the Missy strings one album sooner.

    Danity Kane Stops The Show
    Tuesday. 8.29.06 10:28 am
As many of already know Danity Kane released their self titled debut cd this past Tuesday (August 22nd). I remember checking MTV News for information on the release and there was very little. Here is what they reported... Danity Kane: Will the latest "Making the Band" act make bank with its debut? The self-titled affair isn't just backed by executive producer Diddy, though: Also sharing their wisdom with the newcomers are Timbaland, Rodney Jerkins, Mario Winans and Bryan-Michael Cox, all of whom spend some time behind the boards. Not much coverage for a group that has members that toiled for three seasons on the network. WAIT! Check out my exclusive interview with DANITY KANE filmed at Daddy's House in NYC. Well yesterday Atlantic Records released a statement championing their first week sales. Here are few excerpts: Bad Boy Records' red-hot girl group Danity Kane, stars of the hit MTV series "Making the Band 3," have exploded at retail outlets nationwide with their debut album, "DANITY KANE." The multi-talented quintet is the music industry's newest Cinderella story, as Danity Kane is now neck and neck with veterans OutKast and Christina Aguilera for the top spot on next week's national album chart. Danity Kane's first-week sales triumph is unprecedented for a new artist with little radio or video airplay. Bad Boy CEO Sean "Diddy" Combs commented: "Many people wrote off these girls as just a 'made-for-TV' group, but I believed in their talent from the beginning. The fans have spoken, and with their love and support, Danity Kane's dream is coming true. Sometimes word of mouth is better than radio and video play. This is the best kind of success, one that comes straight from the people." An out-of-the-box phenomenon at retail, "DANITY KANE," which hit stores just two days ago, sold nearly 90,000 units in its first day of release, selling out at most stores across the country. Next week we'll be tracking first week sales, trust me. And speaking of all girl bands, all this DK, DC talk has me wondering what Kelly Rowland has been upto. Apparently she is releasing new music somewhere. Listen to our new joint of the day "Every Thought Is U (Addicted)":

Going Independent vs. Signing With a Label
    Tuesday. 8.29.06 10:32 am
Yesterday on "106 & Park" Kelis made some very interesting statements about the music industry. (I intended to post the video footage but YouTube is ACKIN' up) While on the show to promote her recently released fourth CD, Kelis Was Here, Kelis expressed a disdain for the music industry. She took special care to say that she insisted on "Blindfold Me" featuring Nas being her second single while the music industry -- her label Jive to be exact -- had other plans. She went on to express lack of support and how the industry will drain the life out of you. I tell you that Kelis is a handful. And speaking of "Handful"... listen to a track from Kelis Was Here titled exactly that. I am not necessarily surprised by Kelis' statements but I am a bit surprised that she chose to voice that opinion on the day her CD is release. She's still in a critical stage. Listen to "Ah Shit" from Kelis Was Here: I then got to thinking about artists like Fat Joe, Brandy, Ray J, Shanice Wilson, Amel Larrieux, Donnie and a growing number of musicians who were either forced out of their record label homes or opted to pursue the indie route. I recently spoke to both Amel and Shanice who both have asserted that they've made much more money as an independent that they ever did being signed to a record deal. Shanice went on to say, I've been signed to Motown, A&M and LaFace and I've even won a Grammy under those contracts, but I wouldn't trade the freedom I have now. At a label they control everything from how you speak to how you wear your hair. Now I write my own songs, I co-produce my own vocals. It's just better over all. Prince was one of the first artist to "emancipate" himself from signing multi-album record contracts and moved to distributing his music online. Enter MySpace. Now, I was slow to jump on the MySpace bandwagon. I've heard my friends use it to hook up and tons of pediphiles used it to... well, um yea... SOHH, has MySpace helped artists to really push their music independently? Or is it just a feeding ground for the record labels? I remember years ago when Left Eye, formerly of TLC ,exposed how each of the ladies had only made $40,000 that year at the height of their career while they had sold close to 40 million albums worldwide. Dawn Robinson of En Vogue admitted that one of the members was collecting food stamps in order to feed her kids, because the producers that formed the group, controlled their image and wrote their songs had made off with all the cash. A few years ago we went through era where every rapper was issued their own label. Allowing themselves to be called a boss, when in actuality they too were simply feeding grounds for the major labels. I'm just curious. Is there a blueprint emerging that will allow independent artists to produce and distribute their music to the masses? Is MySpace the answer? Or is there a duality that can exists between being signed with a major label and still not being fucked royaly when it comes to finances? As SOHH Fabulous would say, "speak on it." CALLING ALL INDEPENDENTS: SOHH Soulful will be featuring independent artists via YouTube videos, MySpace pages and other platforms. Submit yourself and your work to [email protected]. Check for us on MySpace. Lastly, our NEW JOINT OF THE DAY is from the sexified, white chocolate, former Mouseketeer, Justin Timberlake. Check out the title track from his forthcoming CD, FutureSomethingSexyBackSounds.... Like M.O.U.S.E!

    K-Fed The Future Of Hip-Hop?
    Tuesday. 8.29.06 11:01 am
That's right fam. Kevin Federline (Britney Spears' baby daddy) is determined to take over hip hop. At least that's what he's telling any media outlet that will listen. This performance from Sunday night's Teen Choice Awards damn near left me speechless. And for some reason I have this newfound appreciation for Vanilla Ice. K-Fed's album is dropping soon and he is REAL SERIOUS about lettin his "skills" shine. Some people are trippin over him dropping the N-bomb in his lyrics, and others are wondering who the hell is this dude's ghostwriter? I'm still trying to figure out if Busta was offended he used his beat at the beginning. What the phuck is really goin on here folks? Yeah, the beat may have been hot in the performance, but damn. Are people buying this cat?

    50 Callin Out His Enemies?
    Tuesday. 8.29.06 11:04 am
Word in the industry is that 50 cent is not feelin Lil Kim and Irv Gotti right now--on a personal tip. And he's letting everybody know in a real public way. Supposedly he's telling folks that he's kickin Gotti and Kim's names off his VMA afterparty list since he's not trying to have no enemies up in his party. The MTV VMA's are goin down in the NYC in a bout a week. And 50 and LL are hosting the official afterparty together at TAO. (Yeah, now those two are all on the best friend tip and shit). So 50 is letting everybody know that Irv and Kim definitely aren't welcomed at his joint. Needless to say I hear the "enemies" are hella salty right now and may try to cause 50 some problems next week....
