Powwows and Horton Hears a Who
Sunday. 3.30.08 4:54 pm
Last night, I went to see Horton Hears a Who. It was a very funny movie. I would recommend it to most people as it is not TOO scary or anything. I liked this thing called, "Katie". She is this big puffball with hooves. She is sweet but then a little bit... of kilter? She made me laugh.

This morning I went to church and they have a big retirement service for a lady that I didn't actually know. They also talked about doubting Thomas. The sermon was about how doubt is really healthy. I have heard that doubt is the first step to belief. I think that is part of the reason why converts are some of the best christians. They have actively thought about it for a long time and then decided to CHANGE THEIR MINDS. That kind of energy is very powerful.

After that, I did some stuff for my proposal and looked up the powwow! It was funny. A friend of mine came down this weekend for the powwow and I saw her as I was going outside. I told her that I wanted to go and she told me, "You better!" It was funny, because I hadn't expected that kind of reaction.

It was going on right then, so I decided to head over. It was snowing like crazy, so I was pretty psyched to get inside. The dancing competition was really cool. I saw some of the most inventive uses of feathers that I have ever seen in my life! I watched them for a little while and then looked at the jewlery stand for a bit and then left.

Honors House
Saturday. 3.29.08 11:50 pm
So I went to see the honors house the other day! Hurray! It is still under construction, but it looks really cool! They have a balcony (which they are walling off [sadface]) but you can kind of see why. Also, they have this HUGE rec room which they want to turn into a little movie theatre, which they really could! And also, in the basement, they have this really sweet study area with a fireplace that they are going to make gas and everything. I'm a little worried that after all the new codes go in the rooms aren't... going to look as good as I'm imagining, but yeah, I'm pretty psyched. All I have to do now is make sure that I get my interest application form in on time and hope they accept me, lol. They say that first dibs go to people who have already lived in the honors house, but none of them were on the tour and I think only sixteen people showed up to the tours all told, so I can't imagine that there is that much outstanding interest... but we'll see.

The Mysterious Effects of Short Term Karma
Tuesday. 3.25.08 11:12 pm
It all started when I was heading out of Walmart. I think it was the second time that I had been there that day. Coming in, I saw the homeless person with a sign waiting at the edge of the curb. I feel like I am like most people: sort of scared of homeless people, but I felt like God might like me to actually give the guy some money for once and so the combination led me to an ultimatum: "If there is still someone there when I get back, I'll give them money." So, my purchases in hand, I was driving out and I saw a woman sitting in the place where the old man had been. It wasn't the same person, I reasoned, but I was going to have to stop at the stop sign any way so I figured that I was kind of stuck.

I reached into my wallet and parsed out 4$. I leaned out the window and called to her. She came over, took the money, said, "God Bless you." and I was on my way.

My soul was probably in a good place when I left the Walmart that day, but I have to admit that I was feeling a little... stupid? I had been trying to manage my money better and it seemed like throwing it away on some homeless person wasn't exactly my best move, financially. It was a good thing, though, I argued. So I decided to just try and forget about it.

"Besides," I thought, "It's not like I'll go hungry."

After that I went about my day. I wrote up some stuff for book arts, took a walk, surfed the internet: usual stuff. I went to book arts, they liked my book a lot. I was pretty happy that they liked it. My professor was talking about some classes that I should think about for next year in the education department and where I might like to go to grad school. I had to cut him short because I was meeting my bible study at 6:30, but it was nice to have him excited about my future.

I met my bible study and, seeing as some of us were kinda hungry, we decided to go to Qudoba, a new place that had opened up downtown. I was pretty excited about it as I had heard they had good food and tried it at one of their Denver location. When we got there, I decided to go in on some nachos with another girl and so, after going through the humerous trial of trying to politely decide was we both wanted on it, came to the end of the line.

They were giving out free drinks to students, so we asked if we could have free drinks as students, but the girl there said that she could only give out one. It made sense, I mean, we were being kind of cheap, doubling up to begin with, but her manager was there and he asked if this was the first time we had been there. As I said, it's a new place and I had never been there, so I said, "no, we haven't", so he said that she should give us the two free drinks.

As he was punching it in, however, the girl must have typed in the wrong thing because he said, "I didn't tell you to do that.."

"What? Well... I can undo it," she suggested in a drawl frustrated way.

"No, it's okay, but I didn't tell you to do that," he repeated.

The girl turned and smiled at us then and said, "Well, since this is your first time here, you get your meal for free."

Sweet deal hunh? You know what is even stranger? My portion of the meal would have cost me 4$.

Getting Back
Monday. 3.24.08 5:29 pm
Well, I am back at school after midterms and Spring Break. It seems ever the case, even when everyone has the week off, that you end up coming back to a lot of work. I am sifting through it pretty painlessly, though. I created a schedule and, while I haven't really been following it, it has given me a good idea of where I need to be when.

I started out the day with some frustration with the Residence Life and Dining Services. I made the mistake of telling my neighbor that and I think she thought I was moving out or something. I'm not moving out, at least not yet. I got my grant to work on my kids book (yeah!), so that means I have to find a way to live here over the summer. After going down to their office three times, I finally got someone and they told me that they weren't ready for me anyway. :P What can you do?

I went to my first class. My teacher had put me in charge of attendance while she was gone. It was sort of a weird experience. I expected that everyone would get the idea of what was going on and then more or less clear out. Instead, everyone was there early like they always were and everyone was curious as to what the next assignment was about. I was explaining the project and answering questions and everything. It was just weird, because I was kind of a substitute teacher and here I thought I was going to just be an attendance paper keeper!

Also, I created a band poster this break. It was pretty fun and I got it in to the guy today. It was funny because I was supposed to meet him in the Union, but I had not actually ever seen him before. It was kind of like a mop 'drop' or a blind date. It's like, "Yes, in front of the bookstore. I'll be sitting at a table with your data CD" But I actually didn't set that up. He just called my phone when he was getting close and then I was able to give it to him. I think I might go to the concert.

Then I ate lunch with a friend... and then picked up two people along the way, lol. I feel like I have to get better at the whole, "Giving my full attention to someone" thing, but I saw them walking by and I was excited to see them. You know how it is though, when you are eating with someone who is talking to other people half the time. You are thinking, "well... I am kind of finished eating but they're still talking... but not to me and..." so I'm not sure how to deal with that.

One thing I am grateful for: this isn't midterms. I barely could get to the computer then, lol.
