Malthus and The Problem of Population Monday. 5.19.08 4:38 am 'Population problem' is the root of savagely deteriorated environment. The rich class of the 19th. century decried it as an ill and they also used to argue that it made the harsh environment of capitalist industrialism necessary. before 1700 the population growth of each century was about one million. Between 1700 and 1800, it was three million. In 1798 T R Malthus wrote Essaay on the Principle of Population the central theme of which was that population in general are stricken with extreme poverty and efforts to overcome this situation would do more harm than good. He argued that human beings or for that matter all animals increase their population geometrically (1,2,2,4,8...) whereas the would thus increase only arithmetically (1,2,3,4...). Human population would be doubled in every 25 years. The most important of his theory is the limitation of food production and supply. The application of additional labour, the extension of cultivation land and improved agriculture technique would not be able to stem the rot as all of the best land would eventually come under cultivation. So without any other check or control less supply of food or for that matter starvation would put a brake on the population growth at the rate at which the food supply would be coming. Malthus advocated for checks on population growth: Preventive checks, those that reduced the birth rate and included sterility, sexual abstinence and birth control. Positive checks included increased death rate, misery, plague, war and famine. These checks maintain an equilibrium between population growth and available means of subsistence. Ultimately this check formula boiled down to “moral restraint, vice and misery”. He defined moral restraint as “the restraint from marriage which is not followed by irregular gratification. To him, the great difference between the rich and the poor was the greater moral restraint of the former. “Carelessness and want of frugality, vice and misery were the common amongst the poorer section. Along on the lines of his seminal thought Malthus opposed any measure that would smooth the harsh impact of the market on the poor. Comment! The bio-sphere which is the mainstay for the living beings and plants is under severe constrints resulting in a chatotic situations for both living beings and plants. And the existence has become at stake. It is mainly due to ever increasing human activities and indiscriminate violation of the code of conducts meted out to the nature as a whole. This attitude is vitiating the earth's bio-sphere on an alarming scale. These can be traced from the following available datas : 1)The carbon dioxide content of the atmosphere has grown up by 25% in the last 200 years, with about half the increase having been accrued since 1950. The sources are internal combustion engines, furnaces. This results in global warming and Greenhouse Effect. 2)Nitrogen cycle is being disturbed. Increased use of nitrate fertiliser is at the root of this evil. Since nitrate is readily leached from the soil by water, the increased use of nitrogen fertiliser has caused nitrogen pollution in the lakes, rivers, streams, and ground water. 3)Human beings now use (take or transform) an estimated 25% of the net photosynthetic product (NPP) i.e. the plant mass fixed by photosynthesis. As human beings consume more of the primary productivity of the earth for themselves, less is left for other species. 4)The withdrawal of water from natural circulation has increased 35 times since the 17th. century. Now this is annually about 3,600 cubic km. per year. This is a grave concern for the watersphere of the earth. 5)Since the development of agriculture, deforestation is wildly rampant. It is about 8 million sq. km., an area almost equal to the continental United States. The extinction of forest-cover on this scale has caused alarming change in the bio-sphere. All these features have viciously polluted the climate and that is gradually causing a lot of costraints and concerns for the life's existence in the world. Until and unless human beings can control their indifferent attitude towards the nature the whole thing will get out of the chances to stem the rot. Comment! This way leads to every nook and corner of life, a journey into the labyrinth of life. Lao-Tze describes this journey as a starting-block. He said, “The Journey of a thousand miles begins with one pace”. Sages of the caliber of Lao-Tze and Confucius in their evangelical mission taught the people a new way of life to imbibe the ancient wisdom truly reflected in the old rituals which had faced the sword of ignorance and neglect. They revived them in their mission to lead the people to the way of truth of virtue and contentment. Only truth should prevail in life, they said. This journey intermingling the path is appropriately called the Tao or The Way. What is this way? Where does it lead us to? This way is way to our happiness, life’s fulfillment through virtue and truth. Without virtue and truth the life’s journey falls into quagmire, life’s goal cannot be reached life remains unfulfilled. Through this way we have to walk, through this way life moves on and through this way life’s journey comes to an end. But Tao is not only The Way of life. It also acts on the principle of the whole of Universe. It is the prime mover maintaining the order of the, Rwita. In this respect Tao has got a deal with the Vedic principle of the Universe.Tthat is, Rwita of the Universe is perpetually in motion following the course in its journey an order of reality which is also the conterminous with the views of human life. This order of reality is the summum bonum of human life in tangible relation of the order of realty of the Universe. This is Tao or rwita as expressed in the treatises of ancient sages. Comment! As you generally cannot remember what you see in our dreams, sometimes you think that you do not dream. But when you sometimes remember a full sequence or a part of the sequence of some of your dreams, then only you become conscious that you too dream like others. Actually in your wakeful moments you live in your conscious level of your mind. But when you sleep, you get into the subconscious realm of your mind which is too obscure and archaic to comprehend in your consciousness. We think in our consciousness and we dream in our sub-consciousness-. We do not have much conscious control and comprehensibility of our sub-consciousness or subconscious level of our mind. In the realm of sub-consciousness, as we think unconsciously, that is, we think but we cannot think in the way we think in our consciousness and that is thinking in the subconscious level of our mind. And we think in chains of thought. That chain is never snapped in our realm of senses even in our sub-consciousness as we live in that level of our mind during our periods of sleeping moments. That chain if thoughts is picturesquely reflected in our dreams. So, we now understand that we do dream during our sleeping period when our consciousness gets entangled in sub-consciousness. And dreaming is an act of thinking sub-consciously in the realm of sub-conscious level of our mind and as this realm is too obscure and archaic we cannot properly keep track of these chains of thoughts. These chains of thoughts are incomprehensibly reflected in pictographs which are surrealistic in nature. In the case of surreal paintings of art, we are really duped in understanding them in our usual way of linear thinking. We are led to believe sometimes this or sometimes that. It is said that surrealistic are born in dreams of the artists. As in the case of surrealistic art, so in the case of our dreams the meaning of which gets obscured in our plain thought process. That is why dreams most likely cannot be interpreted plausibly. Freud tried to interpret dreams by using the methods of psychoanalysis. But he also failed to produce conclusive proof interpretation of dreams. Dreams are the matter of our sub-conscious mind and the sub-conscious mind varies from people to people depending on the person's education, culture, social ethos, parental background, intelligence, emotion, perception etc. Different persons dream differently and the dream codes and idioms are also different. Dream of one particular event or thing is dreamed differently at different times. It is just beating about the bush in trying to interpret dreams. Comment! I am a helpless soul begging your mercy I am thirsty of love and life Without you how can I live in love of life? When storm spreads its wings When waves of sorrow deluge me I come to you to pray again and again. Comment! What is this life that means a part into the elements of nature? What is this life that means deeds with a mission universal? This life means all a lesser thing in God's design This life is an eternal bond to the ecology of the complex whole It is life that enhances life into life As easy as when a life upholds the sunshine of the millions It is life that is delved deep into the mystery of life It is life as big as the rise and fall of times and tides As easy as the lapses of every passing moment As deep as the depth of all cosmic hopes and desires. What is the meaning of all If there is no way to salvage pride and glory of life? If there is no ends to go after life? It is life to go after life As life is the full measure of life As life is the justice of universal life As life is as big as the cosmic bowl As deep as the expansive sky And when life has no more meaning to breath fire Life becomes as easy a prey as the lengthening shadow of death.
