Me: The National Championship of American Football was on Sunday. It's about four hours and it has the best, most expensive commercials. Ukr Mom: You watched it online? Me: No, I watched it at a bar that stayed open late. Ukr Mom: Did you drink? Me: Well, yes... Ukr Mom: That's a good girl Comment! (1) | Recommend! Good Day/Bad Day Thursday. 2.3.11 3:50 pm Back in October, I wrote a grant to get some electronic equipment for my school's new journalism club. In December, we were awarded the grant, and now we're finally starting to do the purchasing. It's super exciting! The "Media Room" Now has a brand spankin' new computer and scanner/printer, as well as a new lock for the door. And guess what? I have my very own key to the classroom! It's a little pathetic, but this little key made my month. I am way more excited to have a classroom key than I was to have my old boyfriend's apartment key. This evening though, I'm in a total funk. I can't say it's for any particular reason. It's just a general feeling of discomfort and annoyance. Imagine how you'd feel if you scheduled a dental appointment (or better, a pap) early the next morning and you're worried you'll sleep through your alarm. But I have no unpleasant appointment, nor any early morning engagements... just the feeling. I guess that's just how being in Ukraine messes with me sometimes, especially in the winter. Comment! Man, I hadn't thought about NuTang in a long time... then I find an e-mail (in the inbox of an account I very rarely use), from someone claiming to be my soul-mate. They found my info here. Though I sense this was spam, it reminded of all those special 'Tang-y moments in my life, and inspired me to do a little update. I still live in Ukraine, and I'll be here until November or December. I teach English, lit, and US country studies to middle and high schoolers. It pretty much rocks, except for the lack of shower facilities and Ben and Jerry's ice cream. But what can you do, right? So what's good with y'all? Comment! (2) | Recommend! I'm in Ukraine, ����! Sunday. 11.1.09 5:18 am And it's pretty much amazing... except that I can't speak Ukrainian or Russian worth a damn. Naked I came from my mother's womb Wednesday. 9.30.09 2:03 am Ah, the words of Job 1:21. Such a comfort to me now that I've learned I will not be going to Turkmenistan. Their government, despite granting us visas, decided on the spur of the moment that it will not accept Peace Corps volunteers this year. Which means, I will be going home tomorrow (or in the next few days) to no job, no car, and no plans. At least I have a home. That's more than I can say for many of the people I was scheduled to serve with. I half-joke that we have all become Internally Displaced Persons. My real worry is that something crazy in going on inside the Turkmen government, and that volunteers curently serving (who have not been asked to leave, as of now) will start seeing trouble. I worry so much for them, because this situation smacks of internal breakdown. Anyway, I am a drifter until I can get a new assignment. For now, I have a reserved ticket to Seattle that leaves tomorrow at 4pm, courtesy of Uncle Sam. However, I can call and change my date and destination. I might not even go home. I might go stay with BFF in AZ for a little while, or spend a week here in Philly. Any thoughts? Comment! (3) | Recommend! |
