Carbs and aging
Saturday. 12.9.06 2:30 am

Reducing Carbs can keep you looking young

Insulin has been labelled as the main culprit to invite ageing early. Eating too much of carbohydrates results in high insulin levels. Increased insulin levels tell the body to store carbohydrates as fat. They also tell it not to release any stored fat. It makes sure that you stay fat. Even worse, high insulin levels also suppress the growth hormone that is responsible for remaining young.

High levels of insulin can cause major health problems like diabetes, hypertension, obesity, high levels of cholesterol, heart disease, kidney disease, female infertility and neuro-degeneration. Greasy fast-food, nutrient-deprived processed foods and over-cooked vegetables are the junk food. Polished grains, sweets, soft drinks, and high-starch foods like potatoes, burgers and pizzas lead to overweight, and give you the looks and feeling of being older. If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, chances are that the excess carbohydrates in your body are, in part or whole, to blame:

* Excess weight
* Fatigue and frequent sleepiness
* Depression
* Brain fogginess
* Bloating
* Low blood sugar and high blood pressure
* High triglycerides

One of the most important things you can do for preventing old age and its diseases is to decrease the intake of carbohydrates, especially those drawn from foods grown below the surface of earth.

New Hampshire First to Offer Free Cervical Cancer Vaccine

A new vaccine to prevent cervical cancer, the number 2 cause of cancer deaths in women, and other Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) diseases was approved by the FDA in June 2006. HPV, which is the main cause of cervical cancer, is also the most common sexually transmitted disease (STD) in the United States. It is estimated that 6.2 million people will become infected each year in the United States and that over half of all sexually active men and women will become infected with HPV at some point in their life. Gardasil, the vaccine used to prevent cervical cancer from HPV, has reported excellent results in its studies. Hopefully this act by New Hampshire to offer the free vaccine to girls will convince the other states to do the same.

Rosie O'Donnel leaving The View?
Friday. 12.8.06 11:34 am

Rosie Odonnel has joined the View. I really like her. I think she is funny and she is a happy person. She has been on the View for the past 3 months and now rumors are spreading that she is going to leave the show.

During a commercial break O'Donnel said that she wanted to work on FX's Nip/Tuck when The View was on vacation during the summer. I am glad that she is not leaving. She really makes the show!

Flu Season

Don't kiss your baby if you have a cold

The flu is very contagious. I took the flu shot and everyone around me is getting sick. As for me, I am feeling GREAT!!! One myth of transferring a cold is by kissing. Dont kiss the baby your parents would say..

The truth: A peck on the lips probably won't hurt, says Neil Schachter, M.D., author of "The Good Doctor's Guide to Colds & Flu. " Unlike a sneeze or a cough, which bring forth viral-rich fluids from your airways, the saliva hanging out in your mouth harbors very little cold virus -- so it's surprisingly hard to pass the illness through kissing. The best way to keep your baby from catching your cold: Wash your hands often.

OK, SO WHAT ABOUT FRENCH KISSING WITH YOUR BF AND SWAPPING SALIVA?? Is that safe?

Are the Rich Just Lucky?

In the ongoing debate about growing income inequality in America — the top 10 percent of families grabbed 43 percent of income in 2004 vs. 33 percent in 1980 — some have argued that America needs a more progressive tax system, both to share the wealth and to help deal with the government's long-term budget woes. When the Bush tax cuts on income and investments end in 2010, plenty of liberals and budget hawks will surely argue that they should not be extended. (This is going to be a huge issue in the 2008 presidential campaign.)

But those who want a flatter, less-progressive system argue that wealth, to a great extent, reflects productivity, and so more productive people should face lower tax rates as an incentive to produce even more. A more productive economy will grow faster, and that's the best way to deal with fiscal problems.

Consider this: What if it's luck rather than ability that plays the greatest role inof people's success? Some studies have shown that inequality among family members, people who share genetic traits, is not much different from that of the general population. Why should we subsidize the lucky with lower taxes?

But a recent study from Harvard University's Graduate Business School found that skill is indeed an important factor in success. The study looked at entrepreneuers, a third of whom are in the top 1 percent of American earners.

Hypoallergenic Cats
Wednesday. 12.6.06 3:08 pm

Hypoallergenic Cats

A small California biotech company says it is ready to deliver the Holy Grail of the $35 billion pet industry: a hypoallergenic cat.

At the start of next year, the first kittens — which the company calls “lifestyle pets” — will go home to eager owners who have been carefully screened and have been on a waiting list for more than two years.

Since it announced the project in October 2004, the company, Allerca, of San Diego, says it has received inquiries from people in 85 countries seeking to buy a cat bred so that its glands do not produce the protein responsible for most human cat allergies.

Cats ordered now will take 12 to 15 months for delivery in the United States, 15 to 18 months in Europe. Cost: $4,000. And owners must pass Allerca’s finicky screening tests.

Taco Bells remove all green onions
Wednesday. 12.6.06 2:46 pm

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, New Jersey (AP) -- Taco Bell ordered the removal of green onions from its 5,800 restaurants nationwide Wednesday after tests suggested they might be responsible for the E. coli outbreak that sickened at least three dozen people in three states.

The fast-food chain said preliminary testing by an independent lab found three samples of green onions appeared to have a harsh strain of the bacteria.

Taco Bell said that the tests are not conclusive but that it immediately notified health authorities and its restaurants while it awaits a final analysis.

"In an abundance of caution, we've decided to pull all green onions from our restaurants until we know conclusively whether they are the cause of the E.coli outbreak," said Greg Creed, president of Irvine, California-based Taco Bell.

Taco Bell established a telephone number, 1-800-TACO BELL, for those with concerns about the outbreak.
