Went my grandma's place yesterday and we had some sort of mini celebration for her birthday. Even though wasn't feeling too well, felt it was the right thing to do because it has been quite a while since i last saw her.

anyway, some of my aunts went too and they bought her favourite durian cake, which i didn't have any because i dont take durian (i know what you're thinking!). The highlight of the day was the present that my aunt bought for her, which is those cool robot vacuum cleaner things that zip around the floor on its own, sucking everything in its path. I must say that little contraption was pretty cute and all, especially when it tries to negotiate between chair legs and get stuck for some time before figuring how to get all. My cousins also had some fun tossing litter on the floor just so the robot will pick it up...

really makes you wonder how we're going to live next time with all these advances in technology. For starters, i think i would like one that automatically washes, hangs and folds my clothes for me, that'll rock haha!

Life should be a game
Monday, April 7, 2008
just like a RPG game..

just think about it! how cool will that be?!

We get born (character creation), we grow up (levelling), we change our clothes (equipment), and we attend school and work (battle grounds)

Imagine school or work is like the battle ground and we have to complete quests like reports and deadlines, in between fighting other characters or monsters like mathosaur, econoster, biologer. Our weapons will be our pens that magically morph into huge ass knives or sticks when we tackle the boss (exams!). Not only that, we should get cool theme music that plays in the background as we go along our everyday activities. For example, i would want to have like final fantasy "one winged angel" as the theme when im doing my exams.

Finally, when we finished our quests and killed the bosses, we get to return back to base camp (home), accompanied by the winnie the pooh theme song and recharge (food) and save our game (bed)!

purple mangoes and ruby jambus
Wednesday. 4.2.08 11:51 am
i miss... how the wind buffers against your face as you run in the cold dark morning
i miss... looking at the sunrise and sunset on the top of the mountain without a care in the world
i miss... the small mattress and little corner that was my home away from home
i miss.. the days we shared in the vehicle, travelling from location to location, talking about life
i miss... the little shack outside that serves excellent chicken and pork chop
i miss... the laughter and fun and all the friends around
i miss... how we would anticipate the coming of a food van and then grab our favourite bubble tea
i miss... the oh so fantastic bowl of noodles that we hunted the supermarkets just to buy a box back
i miss... all the silence that results in chaos 5am in the morning
i miss... looking at the stars and enjoying how peaceful things are, at the same time knowing what we're doing is worth doing so that we can continue to enjoy that silence
i miss you... land of purple mangoes and ruby jambus.. a life that i'll never forget

Screwed up supply chain
Tuesday, April 1, 2008
We played this inventory and supply chain game in operations management class the other day. We were suppose to form teams of four, each team selling one product and each member became a part of the supply chain: retailer, wholesaler, distributor, and factory.

The objective of the game was to satisfy all the downstream demand while keeping holding and backlog costs as low as possible. This is to be played for 50 weeks. Each week, we'd have to satisfy the demand from the downstream and also place an order to our upstream. And the catch was we weren't allowed to communicate to each other except through the orders.

What seemed to be a pretty simple game turned out to be a hillarious two hours as we fought backlogs and huge orders to accumulate an inventory level that i believe is probably the highest in my level lol!

Let's put this in perspective.... at the end, we looked at all the future demand if we were to continue playing and realised that each week's demand was only 8 units by the end user.... However, inventory we carried amounted to:

retailer (pam) 67 units, wholesaler (me!) 327 units, distributor (adeline) 500+ units, and the winner the factory (xenia) 2000+ units!

Based on the constant demand of 8 (which is already the max), this meant that our total inventory was enough to last us for.... 361 weeks; which is equivalent of 6.5 years! If my lecturer found out, i think we'd become like some case study or something lol... we were supposed to graph out the costs and inventory levels too, but we exceeded the axis provided by so much that it wouldn't be accurate anymore. Was fun though :p don't think it'll help me too much if i mentioned it during a job interview for an operations position haha

On the run
Thursday, February 28, 2008
In what seems to be lifted off directly from those movies you see, the front page of The Straits Times was splashed with the mugshot of a wanted man.

His name, Mas Selamat. His line of work: JI Leader.

Apparently, this dude somehow escaped detention either on his way or inside the toilet on Wednesday afternoon and is still at large.

Needless to say, he's got the whole island worth of police, Gurkha's, and armed forces searching for him. Well, in my opinion, if he hasn't already left the island within the first few hours, chances of him leaving would be pretty slim by now and it'll only be a matter of time before he's eventually caught in this island.

Sounds pretty exciting, but then again, just be careful when you're out.

Another thing....

Last week, i'm sure you guys would have heard of the crane accident in NUS. Just so happens that the crane almost fell onto my school building and bus stop that i usually frequent. It was only to the quick thinking of the operator that he swerved it last minute to avoid many more casualties, at the cost of his own life. I only heard about this incident the next day as i took another route back, or else i would have saw the wreckage because i ended classes around that time. The lads around school are organising some sort of fund to be distributed to the victim's families, if you are from biz, or even from school, i urge you to help out. I'll be putting my money where my mouth is, and though it's not much, i feel it is the right thing to do, so should you.. *hint hint*

here's the website for more info:
